Abstract

212,357. Pickett, F. N. Jan. 15, 1923. Projectiles. - Explosive charges are removed from shells by combustion. The shell is first unplugged, the resin or pitch on the surface of the charge is removed, also the covering discs, if any, and the exploder if of picric powder. The shells are then placed in a tank of water at the bottom of a hole in the ground, or in water holes 2, Figs. 1 and 2, in cubicles formed by partial transverse walls 5 in open trenches walled with empty shells 3, 4 backed with earth or sand 10, a rail track 6 running along the trench for the transporting of the shells to be burnt. After the shells 1 have been put in the holes 2, perforated metal plates are fitted over their projecting noses, and a sludge of amatol or of a mixture of amatol or trintrotoluene with ground flare composition is placed on them. On the top of this sludge, a quantity of smokeless powder or cordite is disposed and is ignited by means of an electric fuze enclosed in a bag of black powder tied to a bundle of cordite. When the shells are charged with trinitrotoluene, the shells, after they have been unplugged as explained above, are placed nose down on rails 7, Fig. 4, on the sloping sides of an open trench. Small heaps of firewood 8 sprinkled with ground flare composition are placed about the noses of the shells 1 and are ignited by a trail of cordite 9.
