Abstract

Hanger 20 has hooks 21, 22 at opposite ends interconnected by tie 23 which slopes down from the front edge of gutter 8. Hook 21 engages in inward-directed lip 11 of gutter 8. The hanger can flex so preventing damage to the guttering if it becomes filled with ice. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to guttering This invention concerns guttering and more particularly the so-called hangers for rolled seamless guttering of the kind (hereinafter termed of the kind referred to) having a trough-like crosssection with an inwardly directed rolled over lip which is folded back on itself along its front edge to form a location for the outer ends of the hangers.
Seamless guttering of the kind referred to is rolled from a metal strip, usually of pre-coated aluminium, frequently on site to give precisely required lengths which are secured to the fascia boards of a house or other building using hangers and which are interconnected and fitted as may be necessary by and with pre-fabricated internal or external corner pieces and end-plates.
The hangers, besides supporting the front edge of the guttering, also serve to prevent the front edge from being inwardly deformed, as for example, by the action of a ladder being used whilst resting against the guttering. They can also support a mesh within the guttering to prevent any accumulation of leaves or other debris therein.
As is well known, guttering can becbme filled with ice during winter conditions, as a result of the down-pipes being blocked with ice or otherwise. Due to the expansion the hangers are subjected to considerable stress, may frequently either be deformed, or cause damage to the rolled over lip at the front edge of the guttering.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hanger for guttering of the kind referred to which overcomes, at least to some extent, the problems aforesaid.
According to the present invention there is provided a hanger for guttering of the kind referred to comprising a strip-like member whose cross-section comprises a hook portion at one of its ends adapted to engage said location at the front edge of the guttering, fastening means at its opposite end for engaging the rear of the guttering and a tie bar interconnecting said hook portion and said fastening means characterised in that the cross-section is such that the tie bar slopes downwardly from the front hook portion to the fastening means when the hanger is in position on guttering which has been fixed in position.
Preferably the junction between the front hook portion and the tie bar is reinforced by being of thicker section. Preferably the hanger is comprised by a transverse strip of an aluminium extrusion.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawing, which shows by way of example only, one form of hanger for guttering of the kind referred to and embodying the invention.
Of the drawing: Figure 1 shows a cross-section through guttering of the kind referred to; Figure 2 shows a side view of the hanger: and Figure 3 shows a cross-section through a length of the guttering of Figure 1 when installed on the fascia board of a house.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 of the drawing it will be seen that the guttering 8, which has been rolled from a pre-coated aluminium strip is of trough-like cross-section having a vertical rear wall 10 adapted to abut the fascia board F (Figure 3) of a house, and an inwardly directed rolled over lip 11 along its front edge which is folded back on itself to form a slot-like location 12 for the outer end of hangers.
Each hanger 20 is comprised by a transverse strip cut from an aluminium extrusion and has a cross-section comprised by a forward hook portion 21 adapted to engage the slot-like location 12 and a rear hook portion 22, adapted to engage the upper edge of the wall 10 of the guttering 8 and a tie bar 23 interconnecting the hook portions 21 and 22. The cross-section of the hanger is such that the tie bar slopes downwardly from the hook portion 21 when the hanger is in position on an installed length of guttering 8, as can be most clearly seen from Figure 3. The junction between the forward hook portion 21 and tie bar 23 is reinforced by being of thickened section.
In use the guttering 8 is secured to the fascia board F using the hangers 20 positioned at half metre centres, or thereabouts, along the guttering and pins 40 which are passed through apertures 24 in the hangers and driven through the wall 10 and into the fascia board.
Should the guttering 8 fill with water which subsequently freezes the front wall of the guttering is forced outwardly by expansion, and the hangers 20 subjected to considerable tension.
The reinforcement between the hook portion 21 and tie bar 23 prevents the bending of the hook portion relative to the tie bar and the slope of the tie bar enables the tie bar to flex upwardly so that the hook portion 21 can move outwardly with the forward edge of the guttering, thus preventing damage to the lip 11.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
Thus, for example, the rear hook portion may be replaced by other fastening means such as a simple plate which abuts the rear wall of the guttering.
