The connector comprises a connection sleeve (4) of the outer tube (2), into which the inner shaft is disposed; a wedge sleeve (5) wedgeable between the connection sleeve and the inner tube; and an annular tightening member (6) attached by threads (7) upon the connection sleeve and disposed to move the wedge sleeve in between the connection sleeve and the inner shaft. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Connector
The present invention concerns a connector mainly for joining together the extension parts of a tool shaft, said extension parts consisting of a tubular outer tube and of an inner shaft telescopically pushable thereinto.
Extendable tool shafts are needed e.g. in certain special tools, such as bough saws, bough cutters, rime whips, etc. In the art is known no usable tool shaft construction which could be extended with ease for the duration of use and shortened with ease after use. In the art is among others known a shaft construction where the extension parts of the shaft are joined with each other by a conventional sleeve or by other known end-to-end junctures.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate the drawbacks mentioned. It is a particular object of the invention to provide a connector mainly for tool shafts which enables rapid extension of the shaft of tools for the duration of working and once again their rapid shortening e.g. for transport. A further object of the invention is to provide a connector mainly for tool shafts which enables the tool shaft to be extended to desired length, i.e., steplessly so that the shaft of the tool can be extended exactly to desired length, taking into account the purpose of the work and the worker's special requirements.
Regarding the features characteristic of the invention, reference is made to the claims section.
The invention is described in detaii in the following with the aid of an embodiment example, referring to the attached drawing, presenting partly in section a connector according to the invention for the extension juncture of a tool shaft.
In the figure is seen a tool shaft consisting of two parts pushable one into the other telescopically, that is, of a tubular outer tube 2 and a pushable inner shaft 3 fitted into said tube. As taught by the invention, the connector comprises a connection sleeve 4 attached to the end adjacent to the inner shaft 3 of the outer tube 2, and pushable in the direction of the inner shaft.
The connection sleeve 4 has been mounted on the outer tube 2 in such manner that it projects partly over the end of the outer tube to encircle the inner shaft so that the inner shaft enters the connection sleeve 4. Furthermore, the connector comprises an annular wedge sleeve 5, disposed to be wedgable between the connection sleeve and the inner tube. The connection sleeve 4 has been provided with an annular tightening member 6 attached with a thread 7 upon the connection sleeve and disposed to move the wedge sleeve in between the connection sleeve and the inner shaft to the purpose of securing the inner shaft to the outer tube and, similarly, outward for undoing the locking between the connection sleeve and the inner shaft by rotating the tightening member.
In the embodiment of the figure, the shaft 1 is
visible in part, i.e., of the shaft can be seen the parts of the outer tube 2 and inner shaft 3 which are pushable into each other. The connection sleeve 4, wedge sleeve 5 and tightening member 6 are seen in the figure sectioned parallel to the shaft. In the embodiment shown, the wedge sleeve 5 comprises an outward projecting flangelike shoulder border 8, for which on the inner surface of the tightening member 6 has been shaped a groove, i.e., carrying surfaces 9, 10, against which the said shoulder border rests in the direction of the shaft so that the wedge sleeve will move along with the tightening member 6 when this member is rotated with the shoulder border 8 resting against said carrying surfaces. The wedge sleeve 5 is suitably interrupted so that its circumferential length is variable and the shoulder border 8 of the wedge sleeve can be inserted in the groove adjacent to the tightening member, that is between the carrying surfaces 9, 10.
The connection sleeve 4 may be attached to the outer tube suitably e.g. by giueing, by threads, by a clamp joint or by any conceivable mode of attachment. The threads 7 between the tightening member 6 and the connection sleeve 4 comprise a thread provided on the inner surface of the sleeve like tightening member 6 and a mating thread provided on the outer surface of the connection sleeve 4, mainly on the end of the connection sleeve adjacent to the inner shaft.
The tool shaft connector of the invention enables the outer tube of the shaft and the inner shaft to be joined and secured to each other in any desired position, in other words, the inner shaft may be pushed to desired depth into the outer tube and secured thereto with the aid of the connector.
The embodiment example is meant to illustrate the invention, without in any way confining it.
1. A connector for joining together the extension parts of a tool shaft, said extension parts consisting of a tubular outer tube and an inner shaft telescopically pushable thereinto, and said connector comprising a connection sleeve attached to the end adjacent to the inner shaft of the outer tube and projecting in the direction of the inner shaft, the inner shaft being disposed to be pushable into said connection sleeve, and an annular tightening member which has been attached with threads upon the connection sleeve, characterised in that the connector comprises a wedge sleeve disposed to be wedgable between the connection sleeve and the inner tube, and that the tightening member has been disposed to move the wedge sleeve in between the connection sleeve and the inner shaft for securing the inner shaft to the outer tube, respectively to move the wedge sleeve out from between the connection sleeve and the inner shaft for undoing the interlocking, by rotating the tightening member.
2. A connector as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the wedge sleeve comprises an outwardly projecting shoulder border, and that

Claims (3)
2. A connector as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that the wedge sleeve comprises an outwardly projecting shoulder border, and that carrying surfaces have been shaped on the tightening member to about the shoulder border in the direction of the shaft on both sides of the shoulder border, the wedge sleeve being disposed to move along with the tightening member as the carrying surfaces act on the shoulder border
3. A connector for joining together the extension parts of a tool shaft substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawing.
