Description
SPECIFICATION
Support and current supply device for fluorescent light fittings
The present invention relates to a support and current supply device for fluorescent light fittings, comprising a support rail which is intended to detachably support a fluorescent light fitting and is provided with electric current conduits and a current adapter comprising a plug element to be fastened to the light fitting and a connecting element to be detachably fastened to the conduits.
It is previously known to use for the installation of light fittings special rails which are fastened or suspended in a roof or any other supports and to which rails the fluorescent light fitting or fittings are fastened in the desired locations. The necessary electric current conduits are fastened inside the rail and the current adapter is fixed connected to the conduits by an electrician at such a location in the rail that the connecting element of the current adapter fastened to the rail engages the plug element fastened to the frame of the light fitting when the fluorescent light fitting is secured in the desired location in the rail.
However, a disadvantage in such a known arrangement is the fixed installation of the current adapter of each fluorescent light fitting. If it is desirable to change the location of the light fitting, an electrician must disengage the connecting element of the current adapter from the conduits of the rail and connect the connecting element anew to the conductors at another location in the rail. When the light fitting is removed, un-insulated conduits are exposed in the rail, which is not safe.
The object of the present invention is to provide a support and current supply device which avoids the above mentioned disadvantages and permits an electrical connection of the light fitting to the support rail at any location thereof without the assistance of an electrician. This object is achieved by means of the device according to the invention which is characterized in that the conduits are fastened in the support rail to form continuous exposed contact slots in the longitudinal direction of the rail, and in that contact fingers are provided in the connecting element, said contact fingers being engageable with the contact slots of said conduits irrespective of the location of the connecting element in the longitudinal direction of the support rail.
The invention is based on the idea of arranging in the support rail along the entire length of the rail a continuous current output to which the connecting element of the current adapter is connectable by means of a simple manual movement without the need of any tools. This is achieved by making the support rail, which is made sturdy enough to withstand the weight of even a plurality of light fittings, as a contact rail of a kind known per se which is provided with exposed conduits which nevertheless meet the safety requirements. The connecting element of the current adapter is provided with contact fingers or similar which are in a simple manner engageable with the conduits and in an equally simple manner disengageable from the conduits. This renders the installation work substantially simpler and permits the addition, removal and transfer of light fittings without the assistance of an electrician. In addition, the device has the advantage that current is obtained from the rail by means of the current adapters also for spot lights, micromotors, and other objects of consumption.
Preferably, the support rail is H-shaped in cross-section whereby one half forms the contact rail and the other half forms a cable groove. By means of such a shape, the rail will have sufficient strength to withstand, even at long spans, the weight of the light fittings while at the same time a protected cable space is obtained in the rail. When wide areas are illuminated, a relatively large number of cables must be installed.
In the following, the invention will be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 illustrates schematically a support and current supply device according to the invention supporting a plurality of fluorescent light fittings and other current consuming electric apparatuses,
Figures 2 and 3 illustrate an individual light fitting when fastened to the support rail and removed therefrom, respectively, and
Figure 4 shows in more detail the support and current supply device according to the invention.
The support and current supply device according to the invention comprises a support rail 1 and a current adapter 2 for a fluorescent light fitting 3.
The support rail 1 consists of an H-shaped profile bar, for example, of aluminium. The lower half of said rail is by means of insulating strips 4 provided with exposed current conduits 5 extending in the longitudinal direction of the rail and forming exposed current output slots 6 along the entire length of the rail. Such a contact rail is known per se, for example, from Finnish Patent Specification 40,644. The conduits, in this case, operate as 3-phase conduits and a O-conduit.
The upper half of the support rail serves as a cable groove 7 for current supply cables.
The current adapter 2 comprises a connecting element 8 and a plug element 9.
The connecting element is provided with four contact fingers 10 and an actuating lever
11 by means of which the contact fingers are optionally displaceable between a projecting contact position and a retracted disconnecting position. With regard to the contact fingers, the connecting element may be, for example, of the type described in Finnish Patent Specifications 40,644, 44,019 and 45,498. In the lower part of the connecting element is formed a female connecting socket 1 2 the connectors of which are connected to the corresponding contact fingers.
The plug element is intended to be fastened to the frame 1 3 of the light fitting. In the plug element is formed a male connecting socket
14 the pins of which are connected to the conduits of the light fitting.
The frame of the light fitting is provided with cam-operated gripping fingers 1 5 by means of which the frame is fastened to the support rail. The lever 11 of the connecting element of the current adapter actuates a cam plate 1 6 by means of which the connecting element is secured to the support rail.
In order to install the fluorescent light fitting on the support rail, the connecting element 9 of the current adapter is inserted in such a location of the rail which is in alignment with the plug element fastened to the frame when the frame is secured in the desired location in the rail. By means of turning the actuating lever 11, the connecting element can be fastened to the rail and the contact fingers brought into engagement with the conduits.
Hereafter, the frame of the light fitting is positioned against the rail so that the pins 9 of the plug element extend into engagement with the connecting socket of the connecting element. The frame is secured to the rail by means of the gripping fingers 1 5.
It will be noted that the electrical connection of the light fitting to the support rail can be carried out in a simple manner without any electrical installation work. When it is desirable to transfer the light fitting to another location, the connecting element can be simply disengaged from the rail and fastened in a new location. Also spotlights 1 7 and adaptors 1 8 for small apparatuses can be connected to the support rail.
The drawings and the description relating thereto are only intended to illustrate the idea of the invention. In its details, the support and current supply device according to the invention may vary within the scope of the claims.
