Abstract
211,571. Seal Co. (London), Ltd., Pattinson, H. D., Rose, J., and Jascourt, I. Nov. 22, 1922. Cells; absorbents. - The more hygroscopic materials for the electrolyte are contained in solution in a chamber at the top of the cell, the remaining materials being packed in the dry state between the electrodes. Gelatinizing and inert materials may be mixed with the dry portion of the electrolyte, such as gum tragacanth, dextrin or gelatine, and ground bone, pumice or semolina or glass-wool placed in layers between layers of the other materials. The chamber may be formed by partitions b, i and a tube t for receiving the terminal c of the carbon electrode f as shown in Fig. 1. A stopper in the form of a rod k passes through openings in the chamber and is removed when the cell is to be used. The chamber may however be closed hermetically, the upper and lower walls being pierced with a nail &c. when the solution is to be discharged into the cell. Fig. 5 shows a further modification in which a separate chamber c is placed in the upper end of the cell, glass tubes z depending into the chamber. The solution is released by passing a nail &c. down the tubes to break their lower ends and pierce the bottom wall of the chamber.
