Abstract

A plastics container is formed with a bottom wall 12 which includes an array of nine feet 18, three along each edge and one in the centre of the bottom wall. The feet form part of the container volume and are arranged and dimensioned to provide two openings on each side for the insertion of a lifting fork. A tray 23 of similar form to the bottom wall of the container is fixed over the bottom wall, externally of the container, to reduce the risk of damage to the bottom wall with a layer of plastics foam located between certain regions of the container and tray 23. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Moulded containers The present invention relates to moulded containers for transport and storage of materials. It is concerned particularly with containers, such as bins, of generally rectangular plan and with a base shaped to allow lifting of the container by a lifting fork of a fork-lift truck or similar handling equipment.
To achieve maximum capacity while keeping the manufacture of the container simple and cheap it is proposed to produce a container moulded from synthetic resin material and having a bottom wall whose inner and outer surfaces are substantially similar in shape and which is of generally rectangular plan with projecting feet at least at the corners dimensioned and arranged to allow the insertion of lifting forks between the feet. In this way the need for a separate pallet base is eliminated and the internal cavities of the projecting feet form part of the storage space of the container. However since the bottom wall is fairly thin it may be vulnerable to damage by the lifting forks, especially when the container is used in a cold store and the low temperatures make the synthetic resin material more rigid and brittle.Damage to the bottom wall could make the container no longer usable and require it to be discarded. To avoid this the bottom wall is covered externally of the container by a tray of similar form to the bottom wall which is welded to the container and protects the bottom wall against damage by the lifting forks. If the tray is damaged it may be mended or completely replaced while leaving the bottom wall unaffected.
Preferably the tray is in direct contact with the feet over the surfaces which rest on the ground and carry the weight of the container but elsewhere a layer of foam material is interposed between the tray and the bottom wall. The foam gives some support to the tray while allowing flexure and thus reducing the risk of breaking of the tray.
Preferably the container has additional feet at the centre of each side of the bottom wall and at the centre of the bottom wall. Such an array of nine feet gives support to the whole area of the bottom wall and provides just two openings on each side for the insertion of a lifting fork.
The invention will now be described in more detail with the aid of an example illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa side view of a storage bin in accordance with the invention, Figure 2 is a plan view of the bin of Figure 1, and Figure 3 is an enlarged section on the line Ill-Ill of Figure 2.
The container shown in the drawings has a capacity in excess of 1000 litres and is intended for use in cold stores. It is moulded from polyethylene synthetic resin material. It is square in plan with straightvertical side walls 10terminating in a rim 11 which surrounds the open top of the container. The container has an integral bottom wall 12 which is moulded to form projecting feet 13, 14 and 15 of which the feet 13 are at the corners, the feet 14 are at the centres of each side, and the foot 15 is at the centre of the bottom wall. The bottom wall 12 is of approximately the same thickness throughout so that its inner and outer surfaces are similar in shape and each foot which projects on the outside of the container forms a cavity on the inside which is part of the internal space of the container. Thus, as seen in Figure 3, the foot 15 has an internal cavity 16 and each foot 14 has an internal cavity 17.
Extending over the bottom wall 12 of the container is a tray 18 of similar shape which is moulded from the same material. Each of the feet 13,14 and 15 is in direct contact over its bottom surface with the corresponding part of the tray 18, which in turn rests on the floor or other supporting surface. Thus, for example, as seen in Figure 3, the bottom surface 19 of the foot 14 rests directly on bottom region 20 of the tray 18. At all other points, including the side surfaces of the feet 13,14 and 15,there is a gap between the bottom wall 12 and the tray 18 which is filled with a foam plastic material 21. This foam material 21 provides a somewhat yielding support for the tray 18 and thus reduces the risk of damage to the tray resulting from impact by lifting forks or against obstructions.
The tray 18 is welded to the container 12 along a continuous weld zone 22 extending around the container. Below this the container wall is recessed to allow the sides 23 of the tray to stand flush with the side walls 10 of the container.
CLAIMS (Filed on 26.1.83.) 1. A container moulded from synthetic resin material and including a bottom wall formed with hollow projecting feet, the internal cavities of which form part of the containment volume of the container, and the feet being dimensioned and arranged to allow the insertion of a lifting fork between the feet, wherein a tray of similar form to the bottom wall is fixed over the bottom wall externally of the container.
2. A container according to claim 1 wherein the container is of generally rectangular plan, the feet being provided at the corners of the bottom wall.
3. A container according to claim 2 wherein the bottom wall is moulded with hollow feet at the centre of each side of the bottom wall and at the centre of the bottom wall to provide two openings on each side for the insertion of a lifting fork.
4. A container according to any preceding claim wherein the tray is welded to the container along a continuous weld zone extending around the container.
5. A container according to any preceding claim wherein the supporting surfaces of the bottom wall of the container are in direct contact with the corresponding surfaces of the tray.
6. A container according to claim 5 wherein a layer of foam is interposed between the tray and the bottom wall where the tray and the bottom wall are not in contact.
