Abstract
A flip-top box comprises a body 50 and a cover 51, which cover fits over a collar. The collar is defined by a panel which is initially joined internally to the cover 51 at perforation lines which break on first opening the box, the lower portion of the collar being adhered within the body 50 to a front panel. A front panel 22 of the cover 51 is initially joined to the front panel 11 of the box at a perforation line which is broken on first opening the box, this panel 22 being joined to the top panel of the cover 51 by a tab formed by cutting a recess in the front wall of the collar. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Collar box
The invention relates to a box of cardboard, corrugated board, or other sheetlike material, which box comprises a caselike body and a cover, the caselike body being provided with a collar part comprising an opening for emptying and the cover being bendable over a hinge line for opening and closing the box, and which box is designed so that before the box is opened for the first time the cover of the box is locked to the body by means of a tear-off locking. Such a box may be used for packing sweets.
French patent No. 89792, for example, describes a box which is manufactured from one piece of material so that there is an intermediate piece between the box and a collar part. The box is opened by tearing off a tear strip whereby a box is obtained which has an opening for emptying. This known box can be reclosed. A disadvantage with this known box is that the embodiment is not economical in its material consumption because the intermediate piece is absolutely needed for forming the collar part. In addition, this known box cannot be filled from the sides, but it must be filled on a packing machine from the ends of the box.
A box is also known in which the collar part according to French patent No. 89792 has been replaced by a collar to be glued separately. The disadvantage of this embodiment is naturally the fact that the gluing of the separate collar makes is unprofitable to manufacture.
What is desired is a box in which the provision of the collar part neither increases the material consumption not has a disadvantageous influence on the manufacturing method.
The present invention provides a box whose cover comprises a first cover part which has a back panel and a top panel of the cover and a second cover part which has a front panel of the cover, the collar part has been placed as an extension piece of the first cover part, the second cover part has been placed as an extension of the front panel of the box, the collar part has been attached to the first cover part by means of perforation lines, and the first cover part has been glued on to the second cover part and the collar part has been glued on to the front panel of the box.
Preferred features of the box are described in claims 2 to 5.
A box according to the invention offers remarkable advantages. The invention makes use of the fact that a box can be filled from elsewhere than from the end which is to be opened, that is, the box according to the invention may be filled and closed from the side on normal packing machines. Therefore, different parts of the box can be placed so that no intermediate piece is needed between the body proper and the collar part and the collar part has been attached to the body with perforation lines which will break when the cover part of the box is opened and the collar part remains conventionally to guide the cover part when the box is reclosed. Because of this, with the box according to the invention the board consumption is of the same class as with the known box where the collar part is glued on separately. The manufacturing method is instead remarkably easier than when the collar part to be glued on separately.
The invention will be described further, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a blank for a box;
Figure 2 shows an opened box which has been made from a blank according to Fig.1; and
Figure 3 shows another blank for a box.
The blank 10 shown in Fig. 1 is made of cardboard or currugated board. When the blank 10 is erected a box is obtained which, when opened, appears as.in Fig. 2. Parts 11 and 1 2 of the blank 10 form the front and back panels of the box, respectively, and parts 1 3 and 1 6 form the side panels. Part 1 9 of the blank 10 forms the bottom of the box.
Reference numeral 52 refers in general to a first cover part of the blank 10, numeral 53 in general to a second cover part, and numeral 54 in general to a collar part. According to an important characteristic of the invention the cover of the box comprises thus the first cover part 52 (which in this embodiment comprises the back panel 1 7 of the cover and its side flaps 30 and 31, the top panel 1 8 of the cover and its side flaps 35 and 36, and a flaplike part 21) and the second cover part 52 (which in this embodiment comprises the front panel 22 of the cover and its side flaps 24 and 25). The collar part 54 comprises in this embodiment the front panel 20 of the collar and its side flaps 37 and 38.
According to a second important characteristic of the invention the collar part 54 has been placed as an extension of the first cover part 52. According to a third important characteristic the second cover part 53 has been place as an extension of the front panel 11 of the box.
In the front panel 20 of the collar part 54 there is a flaplike part 21 formed by means of cuts 40, which part acts as a glue flap between the top panel 1 8 and the front panel 22 of the cover. A crease line 41 is provided between the flaplike part 21 and the top panel 1 8 of the cover.
There is a perforation line 23 between the front panel 22 of the cover and the front panel 11 of the box, a perforation line 26 between parts 24 and 13, and a perforation line 27 between the parts 25 and 14. There is a crease line 32 between the back panel 1 7 of the cover and the back panel 1 2 of the box. There is a perforation line 33 between the parts 1 5 and 30, and a perforation line 34 between the parts 16 and 31.
There are side flaps 28 and 29 in the bottom 1 9 of the box. The purpose of the side flaps 24,25,28,29,30,31,35,36,37,38 is to enhance the tightness of the box.
In order to make a box from the blank 10 according to Fig. 1 the top part of the blank 10 is bent round the crease line between the bottom 1 9 and the back panel 1 2 of the box.
After that, a glue stripe 42 is spread on the front panel 20 of the collar and a glue stripe 43 on the glue flap 21. Finally the collar part 54 is bent round the crease line 41, whereby the first cover part 52 is applied to the second cover part 53 and correspondingly the collar part 54 is applied to the front panel 11 of the box. In this embodiment the flaplike part 21 fixes the top panel 1 8 of the cover to the front panel 22 of the cover.
In Fig. 2 numeral 50 refers to the caselike body of the box and numeral 51 refers to the cover of the box. When the box is taken into use, it is opened from the perforation line 23 between the front panel 11 of the box and the front panel 22 of the cover and from the perforation lines 26 and 27 between the side flaps 24 and 25 of the sides 1 3 and 1 4 of the box and of the front panel 22 of the cover. Thereafter, perforation-like lines 39 between the front panel 20 of the collar part 54 and the perforation lines 33 and 34 between parts 15 and 30 and parts 16 and 31 are broken. In the opened box the collar part 54 remains to guide the cover 51 when the box is reclosed.
The blank in Fig. 3 is the same as the blank 10 in Fig. 1, except that the perforation lines 39 have been replaced by perforation lines 39a between the side flaps 35 and 37 and 36 and 38, respectively. In addition, in this embodiment a cut 40 made in the front panel 20 of the collar forms a glue flap 21 a which in its top part is substantially as broad as the front panel 20 of the collar.
A box is made of the blank according to
Fig. 3 in the corresponding way as of the blank according to Fig. 1, but the perforation lines 39a can be broken in the packing machine before the box is closed.
Only some preferable embodiments of the invention have been described above, and it is clear for a man skilled in the art that they can be modified in various ways within the scope of the following claims.
