Abstract

A protective grid for protecting the windows of armoured vehicles against external attack takes the form of a louvred shutter with the louvres 9 being held in a rigid frame 3 which is in turn pivotally secured to the vehicle at the exterior thereof. The louvres are pivotally journalled in the frame and can be adjusted via a toothed bar which is in turn moved via a slot coupling by means of a lever accessible from inside the vehicle. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Protective grid The invention relates to a protective grid for protecting vehicle windows against external action, the grid taking the form of a louvred shutter with louvres held in a rigid frame which is pivotally secured to the vehicle at the exterior thereof.
The object underlying the invention is to provide protection of the armoured glass panes of armoured police vehicles against damage and dirtying from the outside and, moveover, to provide psychological protection for the team inside the police vehicle by making it impossible to see into the interior thereof.
This object is satisfied in that, in an armoured vehicle, the louvres are pivotally journalled in the frame, and in that their adjustment via a toothed bar is effected via a slot coupling by means of a lever accessible from inside the vehicle.
In a further development of the invention the louvres should overlap in the closed condition and the region of the overlap should be profiled.
This construction has the additional advantage that the sealing of the protective grid is improved when, as often happens with police vehicles, bags of coloured materials are thrown at them.
The invention will now be described in the following by way of example with reference to the drawings which show: Figure 1 a protective grid in accordance with the invention as seen in side elevation from the outside, with the width having been reduced and the window contours being shown in thin broken lines, Figure 2 a vertical section through the window and protective grid along the line ll-ll of Fig.
1, Figure 3 a horizontal section through the window frame and protective grid along the line Ill-Ill of Fig. 1, Figure 4 a section on the line IV-IV of Fig. 3, Figure 5 a view of the adjustment lever as seen in the direction of the arrow V in Fig. 4, Figure 6 a side view of a toothed bar, and Figure 7a section on the line VII-VII of Fig. 6.
The protective grid consists of a trapezoidal frame 2, i.e. of a bottom frame member 3, an upper frame member 4 and two side frame members 5 and 6, which are welded together to form the frame, which is pivotally secured by means of hinges 7 to the outer wall 8 of the armoured vehicle and is held in contact with the outer wall 8 by means of a lock 7'.
The louvres 9 are pivotally mounted at journals 10, 6 in the side frame member 5 and in the oppositely disposed frame member 6. The louvres overlap in the closed condition, as can be seen from Figs. 1 and 2, and the upper longitudinal edge 11, as seen in the drawing, of each louvre 9 lies, in the closed condition, in a recess 12 of the lower longitudinal edge of the neighbouring louvre 9 for the purpose of better sealing. The pivotal movement of the louvres (or lamella) 9 from the opened position (shown in broken lines in Fig. 2) into the closed position is achieved by means of a toothed bar 13 which is displaceable in the side frame member 5 of the frame 2, in the longitudinal direction of the side frame member 5, with the aid of the lever 14 by virtue of journals 16 secured to the louvres 9 which engage in tooth spaces 15 of the toothed bar 13 as can be seen from Fig. 2.
The lever 14 is arranged inside the armoured vehicle in order to be able to operate the protective grid 1 at any time as desired from inside the vehicle. The lever 14 is connected to a fork 17 which engages a pin 18 of the toothed bar 13 so that the lever 14 displaces the toothed bar 13 by a pivotal movement of the fork 17, thereby pivoting the louvres 9. The lever 14 is latchable in two positions 19 and 20 (see Figs. 4 and 5) in as much as it can be fixed in latch notches of the strip 22 by rocking movement about the axle 21. The lever 14 can enter into working engagement with the lever 17 with the aid of a slot coupling (or dog clutch) 23 when the protective grid, for example after cleaning the armoured glass pane 24, is once again swung into position at the outer wall 8 of the armoured vehicle.
The detailed construction of the slot coupling 23 and the operating lever can be seen, in particular, from Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Specifically it will be noted that the forked lever 17 is mounted for rotation with an associated axle 26 which is located in a bore 27 in the side frame member 5, or at least in a housing 28 attached to this side frame member. The slot coupling comprises, in the illustrated example, a dog coupling in which dogs 29 are provided on the axle 30 for the operating lever and engage in slots 31 provided in said forked lever. This arrangement is beneficial because it means that the coupling can be readily engaged when the shutter is swung into position.
A coil spring 32 serves to bias the axle for the operating lever in an outward direction thus promoting engagement of the dog coupling. This engagement can be further facilitated by the use of chamfered noses on the dogs and corresponding surfaces on the slot.
It will be noted that the operating lever is mounted about the rocker axle 21 on a hub which is in turn secured by a transverse pin 33 to the axle 30. A coil spring 34 serves to bias the operating lever into its two closed positions.
