Abstract

210,548. Butterfield, P. F. Nov. 9, 1922. Wire; nails and spikes; rods. - A machine for helically grooving rods and wires, particularly for making nails, railroad spikes and concrete reinforcements, consists of a series of cutting-discs carried on and adjacent one end of a sleeve, which is freely rotated in bearings by the longitudinal draw of the rod through sleeve and between the discs in a direction from the sleeve to the discs. The, machine as in the example shown, may be provided with drawing discs, so that the rod or wire may be drawn and grooved at one operation. The drawing-die 5, which may have holes of various sizes, is placed in a recess in the standard 3 and is positioned by a block 7 and a screw 8. The grooving is effected by four inclined discs 60 mounted on arms 62 pivoted in a head 34 which is free to rotate. The arms 62 have extensions 66 which engage a grooved enlargement 29 at the outer end of the guide-sleeve 26 through which the rod or wire 27 passes. A boss 31 on the head 34 rotates with, but is movable axially on the sleeve 26 which rotates on ball-bearings in a sleeve 45. This sleeve 45 is engaged by a ring 57 on the end of a, hand lever 56 which is movable in a vertical plane, but immovable axially. The boss 31 rotates on a ballbearing in a casing 37 which is screwed on to the sleeve 45. The lever 56 carries a double pawl which can be engaged with a ring of teeth 54 on the sleeve 45, so as to rotate it in either direction and by its screw connection with the casing 37, the latter is moved axially to adjust the position of the discs with regard to the wire and determine the depth of the grooves. The casing 37 is carried by and adjustable in a cylindrical head which is provided at each side with a horizontal trunnion so that the cutters may rise and fall freely due to irregularities in the wire. The trunnions are moutned in arms carried on vertical pivots passing through lugs and the standards 3. One of the pivots is removable so that the grooving apparatus may be swung round on the other pivot out of the way of the drawing dies. The arms are connected together by curved cross-bar passing beneath the cylindrical head. The grooving effected is of the form shown in Fig. 10, one side of each groove having a feather edge to engage the wood when a nail formed of such wire is driven causing a rotation of the nail and preventing its too easy withdrawal.
