Abstract

A door knob assembly includes a rose 3 having a recess 4 receiving the spigot 5 of a knob 6. The knob 6 is hollow and closed by a snap fitting cap 7 merging smoothly into the knob contour. A fixing screw 9 is received in an insert in the spigot 5 and screws direct to a door 2, and simultaneously passes through an aperture 10 in the rose 3 to secure the rose 3 to the door 2. Alternatively, the knob may be secured to a through bolt or to a spindle, e.g. a mortice bar, passing through the door. The rose and knob are of plastics. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Door knobs This invention relates to door knobs.
According to the invention there is provided a door knob assembly comprising a rose adapted to lie with one face against a door surface and having a recess on its opposite face to receive a spigot of a door knob, the rose having an aperture for passage of a fixing screw or a spindle (such as a mortice bar), the said rose and knob being moulded of plastics material, the knob consisting of the spigot and a handle part of greater dimensions than the spigot, the knob being of hollow construction and having an outer zone of the handle portion remote from the spindle constituted by a snap-fitting cap merging smoothing into the remainder ofthe handle portion.
When screw fitted to a door, the knob may have a fixing screw solid with an insert in the spigot and this may be used to secure the rose to the door.
In a "bolt-through" arrangement, the spigot may have a recess receiving and locating a nut to engage with a bolt passed through the door, the free end of the bolt passing, if necessary into the hollow space within the knob.
When the knob is to be used with a mortice bar or like spindle, the rose will be secured to the door by its own fixing screws. In order to enable accurate location of the rose, in relation to the mortice bar, a shim may be provided in the recess of the rose, the shim being an accurate fit overthe mortice bar and within the recess, and having holes alignable with screw holes in the rose.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of one form of door knob assembly in accordance with the invention in position in a door; Figure 2 is an elevation, partially cut away, of the assembly of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a sectional view showing a modification; Figure 4 is an elevation of the modification of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing a different form of embodiment of door knob assembly in accordance with the invention; and Figure 6 is an elevation, partially cut-away, ofthe assembly of Figure 5.
Figures 1 and 2 show an embodiment ofthe invention in which a door knob assembly generally indicated by the reference numeral 1 is adapted to be fixedly secured to a door 2 such as a cupboard door.
The assembly 1 consists of a rose 3 adapted to fit flat against the door 2 and having in its surface opposite the door a recess 4 which receives a spigot 5 of a door knob. The knob has a handle portion 6 which terminates in a snap-on cap 7. The whole knob is hollow, and like the rose 3 it is injection moulded in acrylic butadiene styrene (ABS). The spigot is provided with an insert 8 secured therein and the insert 8 has solid therein a fixing screw 9 which protrudes through an aperture 10 in the base ofthe recess 4 of the rose. The rose 3 is thus secured to the door when the knob is screwed home.
It is envisaged that the knob will have the appearance and feel of a ceramic knob, and the removable caps 7 may be provided with a printed decoration, e.g. applied by a tampoprinting technique. Such a knob would be far cheaper to produce than a ceramic knob of comparable appearance with a hand painted or transfer applied design.
In the modification shown in Figures 3 and 4, the spigot 5 is provided with a hexagonal recess 25 to receive and locate a nut which will engage on a bolt passed through the door from the opposite side.
This bolt will pass through the aperture 10 in the rose and through an aperture 26 in the spigot. The excess length of the bolt, if any, will project into the free space within the knob so that a wide range of door thicknesses can be accommodated with a bolt of a given adequate length.
Also shown in Figures 3 and 4 is a gap 27 in the snap fitting lip on the part 6. This is provided to simplify snap fitting and removal of the cover 7. This feature may also be applied to the arrangement of figures 1 and 2 and of figures 5 and 6, although not shown in connection therewith.
Turning now to Figures 5 and 6, this shows a form of knob to be applied to a door and secured to a mortice bar 14 or similar spindle passing through the door and normally having a similar assembly at each end. Only one assembly is shown in Figure 5. Since the knob will be rotatable with the mortice bar 14, the rose 3 is secured di rectly to the door 2 by means of screws 15 passing through moulded-in screw holes in the rose. The knob and rose 3 are again injection moulded in ABS, with the knob having a spigot 5 fitting in the recess 4 in the rose 3 and also having its outer end terminated by a cap 7 normally bearing a printed decoration and snap-fitting onto the remainder of the knob so as to merge smoothly into it.
Within the spigot there is provided a square section lSto receive the mortice bar 14 and a radial threaded hole 17 is provided for a fixing screw 18 to secure the knob to the mortice bar 14.
It will be seen that the central aperture 19 in the rose 3 has to be somewhat larger than the mortice bar to allow rotation of it, and therefore means is provided to enable accurate location of the rose in relation to the mortice bar. This is provided by means of a shim 21 which fits accurately in the recess 4 and also has a square central bearing surface fitting accurately over the mortice bar 14. The shim 21 is provided with a pair of radially opposed holes (not shown) alignable with the holes in the rose 3. These holes are usable as a template for drilling the door to receive the fixing screws 15. The shim is removed while the screws 15 are introduced to secure the rose 3. The knob, preceded if required by the shim is then introduced over the mortice bar 14, and secured to it by the conventional fixing screw 18.
Also shown in Figures 5 and 6 is an escutcheon plate 22 pivoted on a screw 23 and adapted to cover a key hole 24.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
