Abstract

Pallet comprises a base member(s) 1, 6, a plurality of tubular spacing members 3 between adjacent bases and a plurality of bungs 4 flanged outwardly at one end to pass through holes in the base member(s) and to project above the upper surface of the base member(s) to receive and position the tubular spacing members, the dismantled members being packed in a container for transport and storage purposes. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in pallets This invention relates to improvements in pallets for the transport of merchandise.
Pallets comprising a lower base member(s) with spacing members to accommodate a further base member or members forming upper merchandise carrying tiers are generally supplied in assembled form which occupy considerable volume for both transport and storage.
The object of the present invention is to provide a pallet in component form for transportation and storage which may be assembled for use.
According to the invention, the pallet comprises a base member, a plurality of tubular pillars extending upwards from the base member to support a floor member of the pallet, each pillar terminating at a hole or aperture in the base member and floor member and flanged bungs to close the ends and removably secure the pillars in an assembled position.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings: Fig. lisa perspective view of the base member and pillars extending upwards therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the base member showing a pillar being assembled therewith; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section showing a pillar on line 3-3 Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a perspective view to a smaller scale of a pallet.
The pallet is dismantleable for transport and storage purposes and comprises a preferably rectangular base member 1 formed with a plurality of holes or apertures 2 to locate the lower ends of pillars 3 which are aligned with the holes or apertures 2 and are held thereon by bungs 4 each having a flange 5 to engage under the base 1.
The upper ends of the pillars extend to align similar holes or apertures in a floor 6 of the pallet and are secured therein by bungs 4 in a similar manner to their anchorage in the base member.
Each bung 4 is formed in shape to enter the end of a pillar 3 and formed with the flange 5 to engage the under side of the base member 2 or the upper surface of the floor member 6.
Goods or merchandise are loaded onto the floor 6 of the pallet which may be lifted and transported by the prongs of forklift trucks passing between the pillars through the space between the base and floor members.
Alternatively the base members may be formed of strips of material to support the lower ends of the pillars.
The flange 5 and/or the sides 7 of the bung 4 may be formed with deformations e.g. sharp teeth to engage either or both the base or floor members and the sides of the pillars for anchorage purposes whilst allowing for removal of the pillars for storage purposes.
As a further alternative a bung may be provided to readily attach and detach at will the tubular member, e.g. a.form of screw thread. The bung may be of spun or pressed metal or injection moulded plastics or other suitable material.
The system envisages a number of pallets to be delivered, for assembly by a user, in a packaged form comprising an appropriate number of upper and lower floor or base sheets, together with a definitive number of pillars, and with a number of bungs, commonly being double the number of pillars.
Pillars and bungs may be contained in cartons, bags or boxes or the like of suitable size so that the entire consignment can be contained in a cube shaped package with the resulting obvious benefit in economy in transport volume and storage and the costs related thereto.
The dimensions of the pallet may be modified to suit varying dimensions of goods and the magnitude of the load to be carried.
Such variations apart from dimensions of the upper and lower floor and base members will also be catered for by retaining the internal diameter of the pillars and varying the wall thickness. Additionaily, the number of pillars required, together with the necessary bungs may be varied, for example nine equally spaced pillars will permit entry of fork lifting equipment from all four sides, as also would say sixteen supports or any number geometrically placed to facilitate the entry of mechanical handling equipment.
In order to simi la rly cater for varying loads the thickness of the material used for the floor and base members may be varied in quality and/or thickness.
Whilst generally the floor and base members and pillars are envisaged to be of paper fibre board, this may be varied.
In the process of manufacture of the floor and base members there will be necessary punching of the holes or apertures to accommodate the pillars and as an interferance fit, the bungs which have the flange around one periphery to retain the base material between the outer flange of the bung and the end surface of the outer flange of the bung and the end surface of the pillar.
There may, in addition be further perforations in the base member, so that the mechanical equipment commonly referred to as pallet lifters (such equipment commonly having small rollers at the outward ends of their forks) may be accommodated.
Such perforations accommodate the type of equipment where the load is not carried cantilevered from the lifting equipment. Additional processes may be applied to the components to render them more resistant to varying conditions of moisture, oils, abrasion etc.
1. A pallet in component or assembled form for thetransport of merchandise comprising a base member(s), a plurality of tubular pillars extending upwards from the base member to support a floor member for the pallet, each pillarterminating on a hole or aperture in the base member and floor member and flanged bungs to locate the ends of and removably secure the pillars in an assembled posi lion.
