Description

SPECIFICATION A card having a disc record This invention relates to a card having a disc record.
Greetings cards have been known for many years and examples of greetings cards are birthday cards wedding anniversary cards, Christmas cards; Easter cards and Valentine's Day cards. These cards have messages and pictures appropriate to the particular occassion for which the card is intended.
Audio disc records have also been known for many years. Initially they were made from a substantially non-flexible plastics material and, in more recent times, they have also been made thin flexible plastics material.
These latter disc records are often floppy discs. To a lesser extent, disc records are also known containing video recordings.
The present invention is based upon the realisation that if greetings cards could be combined with flexible disc records, then an entirely new product would be formed which would be able to revolutionise the greeting card market and which would therefore have enormous commerical potential. An extension of this realisation is that the formed new product can be used for purposes other than to send greetings.
Accordingly, this invention provides card having a disc record, the cared being playable on disc record reproduction apparatus, and the disc record containing an audio and/or video recording.
Preferably, the disc record will be a flexible disc record.
The card may be formulated such that it comprises a separately manufactured disc record containing the recording, the disc record being secured to a piece of card.
The disc record is preferably stuck to the piece of card but other means of attaching the disc record to the piece of card may be employed if desired.
The card may include a fold over flap. This flap can then be folded through 1 80' to expose the disc record and to allow the disc record to be played in the normal manner on the disc record reproduction apparatus.
The disc record may be what is presently known as a floppy disc. Other types of disk records may be employed and they may be made from any of the presently known materials including plastics materials. The method of production of the disc records may be the same as presently employed methods for producing disc records.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the card may be formed substantially entirely from a plastics material, the disc record being integrally formed with the remainder of the card.
The plastics material may be a single sheet of plastics material.
The disc record may be such that it only contains an audio recording, the audio recording containing a message appropriate to a greeting message, and the card containing words and/or pictures appropriate to the greeting message.
The greeting message may be for a birthday, wedding anniversary, Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, retirement, sympathy, congratulations, or house moving. The disc record may be variously coloured, for example in gold or silver for a gold or silver wedding aniversary.
The greeting mesage may, if desired, be accompanied by appropriate music.
The card may be an audio greeting card which may be sold to both adults and children. The card is preferably such that it will not snap during normal use so that the card may be posted to the recipient in the same manner as presently known greetings cards.
The card may also contain an audio advertising message.
In one embodiment of the invention, the card may be sold as a children's toy, in which case the audio message may be a children's song or nursery rhyme.
The audio message can be recorded in one track for mono recording and in two tracks for stereo recording.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the disc record may contain a video recording, the video recording showing, for example how a firm's products are made.
When the disc record contains a video recording, it will be apparent that firms can show the public how their goods are made.
The video recording will usually include an audio recording describing what the public will see on the video recording.
The video recording may be in black and white or in colour. If the video recording is in colour, then the recording may be effected on four colour tracks with a sound accompliment.
The sound accompliment may be on one extra track for a mono sound recording and on two extra tracks for a stereo sound recording.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a first card in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 is a plan view of a second card in accordance with the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, there is shown a card 2 which is in the form of a birthday card. The card 2 comprises a floppy disc record 4 having a sound track 6 stuck to a piece of card 8. Stuck in the centre if the floppy disc 4 is a printed piece of thin card 10 containing the word "Happy Birthday" and a message 12.
The centre of the card 2 is provided with an aperture 14 for enabling the card 2 to be placed on the centre spindle of a normal disc record player so that the card 2 can be played in the normal manner.
The reverse side of the piece of card 8 is provided with appropriate wording and a picture appropriate to a birthday.
Referring now to Fig. 2, there is shown a card 2 which on the right side as illustrated is the same as the card 2 illustrated in Fig. 1.
Similar parts have been given the same reference numeral and they will not again be described to avoid undue repetition of description.
In Fig. 2, the card is provided with a fold over flap 14 which, when the card 2 is sold, can be folded over to cover and protect the floppy disc 4. The underneath of the fold over flap 14 as shown in Fig. 2 will then be uppermost and this side can be provided with a picture and words exactly the same as the reverse side of the card 2 shown in Fig. 1.
The illustrated inside of the fold over flap 14 can be provided with a more detailed message 18.
When it is desired to play the floppy disc 4, then the flap 16 will be folded along the fold line 20 underneath the right hand part of the card 2 as shown in Fig. 2. The flap 16 is provided with an aperture 22 which, when the flap 16 is folded underneath the right hand part of the card 2 as shown in Fig. 2, is in registry with the aperture 14. The card 2 can then be placed over the record spindle of a record player nd the floppy disc 4 played to obtan the greeting message.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the floppy disc 4 could be a video floppy disc 4 containing solely a video message or containing also an accompanying audio message. When the card 2 is a greetings card, the message will usually be of a standard nature. However, if desired, personal messages could be produced of both an audio and/or video nature, although this would of course make the cards more expensive.
