Description

SPECIFICATION Means for tension resistantly connecting a multi-core cable to an electrical appliance.
This invention relates to means for tension resistantly connecting a multi-core cable to an electrical appliance, and more especially a domestic appliance.
In domestic electrical appliances, the supply cable has to be connected to the internal electrical conductors but must be prevented from pulling on them inside the appliance. It is known to use screw connections for this purpose, which consist of connectors provided inside the appliance and a separate tension resistant clamp, by which the cable is clamped by friction and is thereby prevented from being pulled out accidentally. This method of connection involves substantial assembly costs and additional costs for the clamp.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a simple apparatus which will reduce the assembly costs incurred when connecting an electric supply cable to the internal conductors of a domestic appliance.
According to the invention there is provided in an electrical appliance means for tension resistantly connecting thereto a multi-core cable, comprising a housing whose interior is sub-divided by one or more internal partition walls, guides for the appliance conductors and clamping jaws for the cable wires being mounted on the wall(s) and at least two cable guide hooks being mounted on the wall(s), said housing being closable by a cover formed with a clamping member adapted to engage the cable on closure said clamping member and guide hooks serving in combination to resist withdrawal of the cable from the housing.
In a preferred embodiment the conductor guides and the clamping jaws are fixed to the lateral surfaces of the partition wall(s) and the cable guide hooks are fixed atop the partition wall(s) facing the lid.
The tension resistance and the electrical connection of the cable to the internal conductors may be achieved without any screw connectors. The internal electrical conductors lead into the connection housing separately from one another and are connected to the individual cores of the cable. The conductor guides and the clamping jaws guide the internal and external conductors in the correct positions in the housing and clamp them in place. There is no need for a screw retainer for the cable. By being repeatedly looped round the cable guide hooks and the clamping member mounted on the inside of the lid, the cable is securely fixed in the housing so that it will withstand the necessary tensile, compressive and torsional stresses without being damaged.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a sectional view from one side of the apparatus as assembled; Figure 2 is a sectional view from the same side of the cover; Figure 3 is a side view of the apparatus of Fig. 1 with the cover removed; Figure 4 is a sectional plan view taken on the line A-B of Fig. 3; and Figure 5 is a plan view of Fig. 3.
The apparatus shown has a connection housing 1 with a closure cover 2. Both are made of a non-conductive plastics material.
The interior of the housing is subdivided by means of three partition walls 3, 4, 5. Conductor guides 6 and clamping jaws 7 are provided on the partition walls 3, 4, 5. Cable guide hooks 10, 11 are fixed atop the surfaces 8, 9 of the partition walls 3, 5 which face the cover 2. A clamping member 1 2 is connected to the inside of the cover 2. The multi-core cable 21 is mounted in the connection housing 1 and electrically connected as described hereinafter.
For assembly, the internal electrical conductors 13, 14, 15, 16 are passed through openings provided for this purpose in the connection housing 1 and are passed around the conductor guides 6. The end of the cable 21 associated with the appliance is prepared in advance for the electrical cable connection and the end of the cable is passed through the opening 23 in the cover 2. The bare ends of the wires 17, 18, 19, 20 of the cable 21 are connected to the internal conductors 13, 14, 15, 1 6 by plug connections 22. The individual wires 17, 18, 1 9 20 are pushed behind the clamping jaws 7 and thus clamped against the partition walls 3, 4, 5. Then the cable 21 is looped around the cable guide hooks 10, 11 in the direction of the arrows and the housing 1 is closed by the cover 2.
1. In an electrical appliance means for tension resistantly connecting thereto a multicore cable, comprising a housing whose interior is sub-divided by one or more internal partition walls, guides for the appliance conductors and clamping jaws for the cable wires being mounted on the wall(s) and at least two cable guide hooks being mounted on the wall(s), said housing being closable by a cover formed with a clamping member adapted to engage the cable on closure said clamping member and guide hooks serving in combination to resist withdrawal of the cable from the housing.
2. Means according to claim 1, wherein the conductor guides and the clamping jaws are fixed to the lateral surfaces of the partition wall(s) and the cable guide hooks are fixed atop the partition wall(s) facing the lid.
