Abstract

A straight mid-portion of the metal tie 10 is coated with mouldable material 12, the coating having lateral projection(s) 15 as moisture-trap or drip-promoter 14, intermediate the ends of the straight mid-portion and depending from the tie. Deformation of the metal to produce the moisture trap or drip promoter is thereby avoided, so that there is no stress raiser in the metal to give rise to buckling of the wall tie under compression loads when in use. The coating may be plastics which may be moulded on to the tie as, or together with, the projection; or the plastics may be deformed after coating by hot tools or local heating, or a strip, having bump(s), may be wrapped round the tie. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Wall ties This invention relates to wall ties, and has for its object a method of providing a wall tie of metal with a moisture trap or drip promoter without having to deform the metal, e.g., by kinking or twisting, so that there is no stress raiser in the metal to give rise to buckling of the wall tie under compression loads when in use.
According to the present invention, a method of providing a wall tie of metal with a moisture trap or drip promoter comprises coating at least a straight mid-portion of the wall tie with mouldable material and forming the coating with at least one lateral projection intermediate the ends of the straight mid-portion and adapted to depend from the wall tie when in use.
The mouldable material may be plastics material and may extend over a mid-portion only of the wall tie, but preferably extends over the whole wall tie, which may then be formed of steel, being protected by the plastics coating from corrosion in known manner.
The plastics material may be thermosetting or thermoplastics and be moulded on to the wall tie with the lateral projection co-moulded on it, but the use of thermoplastics is advantageous for applying a uniform coating which is then deformed locally by heating or the application of hot tools to produce the lateral projection or projections. Thus, the wall tie may be formed of plastics coated wire rod (of suitable stiffness with respect to buckling), with end formations shaped for locking in mortar layers, the plastics coating being deformed locally around the middle to form one or more lateral projections. However, the invention is equally applicable to wall ties formed of other metal sections with uniform or nonuniform coatings of thermoplastics material. Thus a flat strip metal tie may have a plastics coating, applied by extrusion or by dip or spray coating, which coating may be rough surfaced so as to provide a plurality or multiplicity of lateral projections a number of which are inherently adapted to depend from the wall tie when in use.
Alternatively, the coating may be formed round a mid-portion only by dropping molten material, such as wax, plastics or metal, on to the tie and allowing it to coalesce round the tie with a depending portion, or by moulding molten material round a mid-portion to form a bulge on one or more sides.
Again, the coating may be formed by bonding round a mid-portion a strip of material wrapped round the tie, which strip is provided with one or more bumps.
The invention also embraces a wall tie of metal provided with a moisture trap or drip promoter consisting of a lateral projection or projections by any of the aforesaid methods.
A number of wall ties in accordance with the invention, and methods of making them, will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan of a round wire rod wall tie in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on the line A-A of Figure 1 and showing a method of providing a moisture trap or drip promoter; Figure 3 is a plan of a flat strip metal wall tie in accordance with the invention; Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on the line B-B of Figure 3 and showing a method of providing the moisture trap or drip promoter; Figure 5 is a plan of another round wire wall tie in accordance with the invention; Figure 6 is a side elevation of the wall tie of Figure 5;; Figure 7 is a plan of another flat strip metal wall tie in accordance with the invention; and Figure 8 is a side elevation of the wall tie of Figure 7, with an indication of how it is provided with the moisture trap or drip promoter.
The wall tie 10 of Figures 1 and 2 is formed from round steel wire 11 coated with thermoplastics 1 2 and bent at each end into a loop 13. In between, the plastics coated wire is straight, i.e., it is not deformed (e.g., by kinking or twisting) to form a moisture trap or drip promoter, so that there is no stress raiser in the metal to give rise to buckling of the wall tie under compression loads when in use. Instead, the wall tie is provided with a moisture trap or drip promoter 14 consisting of two lateral projections 15 above and below the plane of the loops 13 and formed by deforming the plastics coating 12 locally by the application of hot tools 1 6. Thus the wall tie 10 can be used either way up with equal effectiveness.
In Figures 3 and 4 a wall tie 20 is formed from flat strip steel 21 with divided ends 22 and coated with thermoplastics 23, and a moisture trap or drip promoter 24 consisting of two lateral projections 25 above and below the plane of the strip is formed by deforming the plastics coating 23 locally between the ends of the straight midportion by passing the wall tie laterally between a pair of heated rollers 26. Again, tho wall tie 20 is equally effective used either way up.
In contrast, the wall tie 30 of Figures 5 and 6 is formed of round steel wire rod 31, which may be stainless or galvanised or may be plastics coated, with a loop 32 at each end, and a moisture trap or drip promoter 33 is formed by dropping molten material, such as wax, plastics or metal, on to the tie and allowing itto coalesce round the tie with a depending portion 34, whereby the wall tie serves best the way up shown in Figure 6.
Likewise, the wall tie 40 of Figures 7 and 8 is formed of flat strip steel 41, which may be stainless or galvanised or may be plastics coated, with divided ends 42, and a moisture trap or drip promoter 43 with lateral projections 44 is formed either by moulding molten material between moulds 45 or by bonding a strip of plastics material wrapped round the tie.
