The motor axis is lengthwise of the vehicle, the transmission includes an offset drive 22 from the motor 18 which is connected to a differential 25 of the wheel axle by a drive shaft 23. The shaft 23 is connected to the offset output of the motor 18 and to the differential 25 through respective universal joints 26, 27. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Electrically driven vehicles This invention relates to electrically driven vehicles of the kind having a battery pack arranged to provide electrical power for an electric motor which drives, through a transmission, wheels or other ground engaging elements on the vehicle.
In Patent No. 1578145 there is described such a vehicle in which the electric motor, transmissions and a differential connecting the transmission to the wheels of the vehicle, are placed at one end of the vehicle. This arrangement is satisfactory in use but has several rather expensive components, particularly the axle assembly.
It is the object of this invention to provide drive apparatus for an electrically driven vehicle of the kind referred to in which the costs of production are minimised and the layout of the drive system for the vehicle is particularly advantageous.
According to the present invention there is provided drive apparatus for an electrically driven vehicle comprising a battery pack unit detachably securable to the vehicle, and a further unit comprising an electric motor, a differential with shafts connected to ground engaging elements at opposite sides of the vehicle, and a transmission between the electric motor and the differential, the electric motor having its longitudinal axis lengthwise of the vehicle and substantially perpendicular to the axis about which the ground engaging elements are rotated, and the transmission including a drive shaft with flexible joints at its ends and which is generally longitudinally of the vehicle, said drive shaft extending beside the electric motor and being connected between an offset output from the electric motor and the input of the differential.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a plan view of a vehicle incorporating drive apparatus in accordance with the invention, Figure 2 is a view at the rear end of the vehicle showing the drive apparatus and Figure 3 is an end view of the electric motor, seen from the front.
The drawings illustrate a light goods van having an enclosed body the outline of which is indicated generally at 10. At the front is a drivers cab 1 1 and behind this is a goods platform the level of which is indicated at 12 in Figure 2. The body is mounted on a chassis including two generally parallel longitudinal members 13, 14, on which the goods floor 12 rests.
The vehicle has electric drive in the form of a battery pack 17 providing power to drive an electric motor 18 connected in a manner to be described to the rear wheels 1 5, 1 6 of the vehicle.
The battery pack comprises a pannier carrying a plurality of individual batteries. In this example there are six rows of six batteries. To mount the battery pack as a unit beneath the chassis there are three fixing points indicated at 19, 20 and 21.
There are two side mounting points and one at the front of the battery pack unit. Each such fixing point includes a blade and socket inter-engaging combination carried on the battery pack and on the chassis respectively. Fixing pins pass through holes in the blade and socket respectively these being aligned only when the battery pack is in its correctly loaded position. By removal of the pins it is possible to remove the battery pack as a whole from beneath the vehicle for replacement or recharging or maintenance. The electric motor 18 is situated at the rear of the vehicle and provides drive for the rear wheels 1 5, through a reduction gear contained in a casing 22 and a propeller shaft 23. This in turn is drivingly connected to the input shaft 24 of a differential 25.The differential is of conventional kind and has output shafts contained in respective tubes to the rear wheels 1 5, 1 6 at opposite sides of the vehicle respectively. The differential 25 is situated in the centre of the axle in conventional manner. The axle is mounted on springs indicated at 33, 34.
The reduction gear in the casing 22 may be of any convenient kind including meshing gears, chains or other suitable mechanism. The gearing or other mechanism is connected to the output shaft of the electric motor (not illustrated) and provides an offset output shaft. The calsing is secured onto the housing of the electric motor or the casing may be integral with the motor casing.
The propeller shaft 23 has a universal hook type joint 26 at its end connected to the differential input shaft 24 and at its end connected to the offset output of the reduction gear it has a flexible disc type or other universal coupling 27.
Figures 2 and 3 shows the mounting arrangements for the electric motor 1 8. At the front, as seen in Figure 3, there is an angled backet 29 which is secured to the adjacent chassis member 14. At its rear end the motor is mounted by means of two brackets 30, 31 fixed to the casing 22 of the reduction gear, which is itself fixed to the motor, as previously referred to. The brackets 30, 31 attach to a cross beam 32 which spans the rear of the vehicle and is fixed at its ends to the two chassis members 1 3, 14.
The electric motor 18 has its longitudinal axis extending substantially lengthwise of the vehicle and this is perpendicular to the axis about which the rear wheels rotate. Similarly the propeller shaft 23 is perpendicular to said axis about which the wheels 15, 16 rotate and it lies beside the motor 18. It may be at an angle out of the perpendicular.
Since there is, in this example, a difference in the levels of the output of the reduction gear and of the input shaft 24 of the differential the propeller shaft 23 has a downward forwards slope.
However, the parts are so arranged as seen in Figure 2 to minimise such downward slope so that the universal or flexible joints at the ends of the propeller shaft are subject to minimum stress due to changing angle.
A control box 28 is situated at the front of the vehicle in the space usually occupied by the vehicles internal combustion engine. This control box contains electrical control means whereby the electric drive of the vehicle is controlled under the guidance of the driver.
