Abstract
A carrier for holding articles, such as a pot of paint, on a ladder comprises a channel member 1 which fits over the front edge of the stile 15 of a ladder and has a hook 18 which engages over a rung 20 of the ladder to hold the channel member in position on the stile. A tray 3 is attached to the channel member 1 by a single bolt so that the tray 3 can be twisted relative to the channel member 1 to enable it to be set horizontal whatever the inclination of the ladder. The channel member 1 has an internal insert which is held in position by bolts 12 and is adjustable in position towards and away from the side 8 of the channel member to enable the clear width of the channel member to be adjusted to fit closely over the stile 15. A second hook 19 is provided to enable the channel member 1 to be turned upside down and then fitted to the left-hand stile of the ladder if the tray 3 is required at the left-hand side of the ladder. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Carrier for holding articles on ladders
When working on a ladder it is frequently very desirable to have some form of carrier for holding such things as cans of paint or tools so that the hands are left free for holding onto the ladder and working.
When painting from a ladder it is common to hang the can of paint being used by a hook from one of the rungs of the ladder, but this is far from satisfactorily because the can tends to swing on the hook particularly if any attempt is made to wipe the brush on the edge of the can and also the can hangs below the ladder so that the painter must reach round the ladder or through the ladder every time the brush is dipped into the paint.
Various forms of platform and other support have also been proposed but most of these are also supported only from one or more rungs of the ladder and this means again that the platform or support must be positioned behind the ladder, as, if they are in front of the ladder, they obstruct the person standing on the ladder and working, and accordingly it is again necessary to reach either round the ladder or between the rungs of the ladder to gain access to anything carried by the platform or other support.
The object of the present invention is to provide a carrier for holding cans of paint, tools, or other articles for use when working on a ladder, the carrier being arranged so that it can very easily be fitted in position on and removed from the ladder in such a position that the article which is held by the carrier is situated beside the ladder where it is very much more easily accessible to the person working from the ladder.
To this end, according to this invention, a carrier for holding articles for use when working on a ladder comprises a channel member which is adapted to fit over the front edge of one of the stiles or stringers of the ladder to locate the carrier laterally of the ladder, a hook which is fixed to, and offset laterally from, the centre line of the channel member and is adapted to engage over a rung of the ladder adjacent the stile or stringer when the channel member is fitted over the front edge of the stile or stringer to support the carrier longitudinally on the stile or stringer, and a holder for holding the article fixed to the side of the channel member remote from the hook, the hook being positioned so that when the carrier is fitted to the ladder at least part of the channel member extends downwards below the hook so that the channel member is held in position over the front edge of the stile or stringer by gravity when the ladder is in the usual inclined position in which ladders are used.
With this carrier, the user climbs the ladder and fits the carrier to the ladder merely by placing the channel member over the front edge of one of the stiles or stringers and sliding the carrier downwards until the hook engages over one of the rungs at the height along the ladder at which the holder is required. Generally, for a right-handed
person, the carrier is fitted to the right-hand stile
or stringer of the ladder so that the can of paint,
tool or other article is directly accessible to the
person's working hand.
The carrier, may however, be made in an
oppositely-handed manner so that it can be fitted to the left-hand stile or stringer of a ladder.
Preferably, though, the carrier is made so that it
can be fitted to either the right-hand or the left
hand stile or stringer of the ladder. For this
purpose the hook may be detachably fixed to the
channel member in such a way that it is reversible and can be fitted to the channel member either way up. The hook is then fitted over the right-hand stile or stringer and the other way up when the channel member is fitted to the left-hand stile or stringer. In a preferred arrangement, however, the channel member is provided with two oppositely directed hooks arranged so that one of the hooks engages over a rung of the ladder when the channel member is fitted to the right-hand stile or stringer of the ladder and the other hook engages over a rung of the ladder when the channel member is inverted and is fitted over the left-hand stile or stringer of the ladder.
The holder may take various forms according to the nature of the article which is to hold. The holder preferably comprises or consists of a screw-threaded stud or bolt projecting from the side of the channel member remote from the hook or hooks. When such a stud or bolt is provided, various different article supports may be provided, for example, for holding a can of paint, the support may be in the form of a clamp, or it may be in the form of an open-topped box in which the can of paint is placed. However, the holder preferably comprises a tray which is fixed by the screwthreaded stud or bolt to the channel member. The stud or bolt passes through the tray and has a nut screwed on its end. Loosening of the nut enables the tray to be twisted relatively to the channel member so that the tray can be set horizontal whatever the inclination of the ladder.
To ensure that the holder is firmly located in a lateral direction and does not tilt laterally as articles are placed on or in the holder, the channel member is preferably constructed so that the clear width between its sides is adjustable to enable it to be fitted closely over stiles or stringers of different widths.
The carrier may be constructed out of various materials, but the channel member and the hook or hooks at least are preferably of sheet metal and the hook or hooks are then preferably integral with the channel member.
An example of a carrier in accordance with the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the carrier as seen from above and one side;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the carrier from the front and the other side and showing the carrier fitted to a ladder of the non-extending type; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the carrier
from the rear and the other side and showing the
carrier fitted to a ladder of the extending type.
The carrier comprises a channel member 1 and
a holder 2 comprising a tray 3 and a bolt 4 with a
wing nut 5 by means of which a side 6 of the tray
3 is adjustably attached to a side 7 of the channel
member 1.
The channel member 1, which is formed by stamping and pressing out of aluminium sheeting,
comprises, in addition to the side 7, a second side
8, a base 9 and a portion 10 extending parallel to the base 9. An adjustable channel-shaped insert 11 fits between the base 9 and the portion 10 and
is held in position by two bolts 12 which pass through circular holes in the flanges of the channel-shaped insert 11 and through slotted holes 1 3 in the base 9 and through similar slotted holes, which are not shown, in the portion 10.
By loosening nuts on the bolts 12, the insert 11 can be adjusted in position between the base 9 and the portion 10 to increase or decrease to clear space between the side 10 and a web 14 of the channel-shaped insert. This clear distance is adjusted so that it is slightly greater than the thickness of a stile 1 5 of the ladder shown in
Figure 2 or of a stile 1 6 of the ladder shown in
Figure 3. After adjustment, the nuts on the bolts
12 are tightened to fix the insert 11 in position.
The side 8 is formed with a cut-out 1 7 which forms a downwardly directed hook 18 and an upwardly directed hook 19.
In use, after the position of the insert 11 has been adjusted in the manner already described, the channel member 1 is placed over the front edge of the stile 1 5 of the ladder as shown in
Figure 2 and the channel member 1 is then slid downwards on the stile 1 5 until the hook 18 engages over a rung 20 as shown in Figure 2.
The wing nut 5 on the bolt 4, which passes through a hole in the side 7 of the channel member 1, is then loosened and the tray 3 is then set with its bottom horizontal in dependence upon the inclination of the stile 15 when the ladder is ready for climbing, and the wing nut 5 is then tightened to hold the tray 3 is the position in which it has been set.
The hook 18 is placed over the rung 20 to locate the tray 3 at the height required by the user of the ladder and it will be seen that the whole carrier is supported in a position in which its does not interfere with climbing of the ladder in any way.
What is more, the tray 3 is located at the side of the ladder in a very convenient position for a righthanded person on the ladder to place articles, such as a can of paint on the tray.
If alternatively the tray 3 is required at the lefthand side of the ladder, the channel member 1 is removed from the right-hand stile of the ladder and is inverted and placed over the left-hand stile.
The hook 1 9, instead of the hook 1 8, then engages over the rung 20. The wing nut 5 is then loosened and the tray 3 is turned over until it is again in the required horizontal upwardly facing position.
Figure 3 shows the carrier in use on an extending ladder which has a lower stile 21 and the upper stile 1 6 which is slidable upwards along the stile 21 and has its edge protruding forwards from the stile 21 in the usual way.
As shown in Figure 1, the side 8 of the channel member 1 is of greater width than the side 7 and in consequence the portion 10 of the channel member is Ic ated in front of the rear edge of the stringer 1 6 and clear of the front edge of the stringer 21. The arrangement enables the carrier to be fitted to an extending ladder as shown in
Figure 3 without any difficulty. The hook 1 8 engages over a rung 22 in exactly the same way as it engages over the rung 20.
Claims (7)
1. A carrier for holding articles for use when working on a ladder, the carrier comprising a channel member which is adapted to fit over the front edge of one of the stiles or stringers of the ladder to locate the carrier laterally of the ladder, a hook which is fixed to, and offset laterally from, the centre line of the channel member is adapted to engage over a rung of the ladder adjacent the stile or stringer when the channel member is fitted over the front edge of the stile or stringer to support the carrier longitudinally on the stile or stringer, and a holder for holding the article fixed to the side of the channel member remote from the hook, the hook being positioned so that when the carrier is fitted to the ladder at least part of the channel member extends downwards below the hook so that the channel member is held in position over the front edge of the stile or stringer by gravity when the ladder is in the usual inclined position in which ladders are used.
2. A carrier according to Claim 1, in which the channel member is fitted with two oppositely directed hooks arranged so that one of the hooks engages over a rung of the ladder when the channel member is fitted over the right-hand stile or stringer of the ladder and the other hook engages over a rung of the ladder when the channel member is inverted and is fitted over the left-hand stile or stringer of the ladder.
3. A carrier according to Claim 1, in which the hook is detachably fixed to the channel member in such a way that it is reversible and can be fitted to the channel member either way up, the hook being fitted one way up when the channel member is fitted over the right-hand stile or stringer and the other way up when the channel member is fitted to the left-hand stile or stringer.
4. A carrier according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, in which the holder comprises or consists of a screw threaded stud or bolt projecting from the side of the channel member remote from the hook or hooks.
5. A carrier according to any one of the preceding Claims, in which the channel member is constructed so that the clear width between its sides is adjustable to enable it to be fitted closely over stiles or stringers of different widths.
6. A carrier according to Claim 1, Claim 2, or
Claim 4 or Claim 5 when dependent on Claiml or Claim 2, in which the hook or hooks are formed
integrally with the channel member.
7. A carrier according to Claim 1, substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. A carrier according to Claim 6, in which the
hook or hooks and the channel member are of
sheet metal.
8. A carrier according to Claim 1, substantially
as described with reference to the accompanying
drawings.

New or amended claims:
1. A carrier for holding articles for use when
working on a ladder, the carrier comprising a
channel member which is adapted to fit over the front edge of one of the stiles or stringers of the
ladder to locate the carrier laterally of the ladder,
the channel member having a base and two sides,
one of which is fixed in position relative to the
base and the other of which includes a part which
is adjustable in position to enable the clear width
of the channel member to be adjusted to enable it
to be fitted closely over stiles or stringers of
different widths, the fixed side of the channel
member being provided with two oppositely
directed hooks, one of which is adapted to engage
over a rung of the ladder adjacent one stile or
stringer when the channel member is fitted over the front edge of the one stile or stringer, and the
other of which is adapted to engage over a rung of the ladder adjacent the other stile or stringer when the channel member is inverted and fitted over the front edge of the other'stile or stringer to support the carrier longitudinally optionaily on either the one or the other of the stiles or stringers, and the carrier further comprising a holder for holding the article attached to the other side of the channel
member, the hooks being positioned so that when the carrier is fitted to the ladder at'least part of the
channel member extends below that one of the hooks which engages over a rung of the ladder so that the channel member is held in position over the front edge of the stile or stringer by gravity when the ladder is in the usual inclined position in which ladders are used.
2. A carrier according to Claim 1, in which the hooks are formed in the one side of the channel member by a cut-out in the one side.
3. A carrier according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the holder comprises a tray which is attached to the other side of the channel member by a screw threaded stud or bolt in such a way that the tray can be turned relative to the channel member to enable it to be set horizontal in dependence upon the inclination of the stile or stringer on which the carrier is, in use, fitted and in dependence upon which one of the hooks engages over a rung of the ladder.
4. A carrier according to any one of the preceding Claims, in which the one side of the channel member is of greater width than the other side and the hooks are located to enable the carrier to be fitted to the upper stile or stringer of an extending ladder in a position where the upper stile or stringer overlaps the lower stile or stringer of the ladder.
5. A carrier according to any one of the preceding Claims, in which the channel member is formed of metal sheeting.
6. A carrier according to Claim 5, in which the other side of the channel member includes a portion which extends parallel to and is spaced from the base, and the adjustable part is a channel-shaped insert which fits between the base and the portion which extends parallel to the base, the insert being held adjustably in position by bolts which pass through holes in flanges of the insert, in the base and in the portion which extends parallel to the base.
