Abstract

A tape fastening system for a disposable diaper comprises a fastening tape (10) and a reinforcing tape (11), wherein a non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing tape (11) is adhered to an adhesive surface of a free end of said fastening tape (10) so that said free end of the fastening tape may be secured, with interposition of said reinforcing tape, to a desired position on the diaper to tighten the diaper along the waistline when said diaper is fitted to the wearer's body, and said free end of the fastening tape does not extend as far as the free end of the reinforcing tape and may be peeled off from said position without peeling off said reinforcing tape from said position to be subsequently reattached if required. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Tape fastening system for diaper The present invention relates to an improvement in the tape fastening system for a disposable diaper, by which the front portion and the rear portion of the diaper are fastened to each other at each pair of corresponding waistline ends of these two portions.
There have already been used in practice several kinds of disposable diaper which need no diaper cover. Such diaper essentially comprises a moisture pervious topsheet to be in contact with the wearer's skin during use, a moisture impervious backsheet to be out of contact with the wearer's skin during use, and an absorptive core interposed between these two sheets. In one such typical disposable diaper, the moisture pervious topsheet is made of nonwoven fabric of the like, the moisture impervious backsheet is made of synthetic resin film of the like, and the absorptive core is made of cellulosic fluff or the like.
Either one of the front portion and the rear portion of such a diaper is provided at each waistline end with the tape fastening system to fasten this waistline end to the corresponding waistline end of the other portion. The tape fastening system includes a pressure sensitive fastening tape which is usually secured at one end to the backsheet at each waistline end of the diaper's front or rear portion. In use, a free end of the fastening tape is adhered to the backsheet at each wasitline end of the other portion and thereby the front portion and the rear portion of the diaper are fastened to each other at each pair of corresponding waistline ends of these two portions. Accordingly, relatively strong adhesive is usually used as the adhesive for the fastening tape to prevent said free end from being released from the backsheet during use.
As material for the backsheet of the diaper, on the contrary, an extremely thin film of synthetic resin such as polyethylene is usually used to meet the requirements such as softness and manufacturing economy. In consequence, when the free end of the fastening tape which was adhered to the backsheet of the diaper as previously mentioned is peeled off from said backsheet, the tensile force for peeling off may cause a partial breakage of the backsheet due to a high adhesive force of said free end. Such breakage makes reuse of the fastening tape and, therefore, readhesion of said free end impossible. This means that the diaper is no longer useful.Even is no breakage occurs when the fastening tape is peeled off from the backsheet, it is inevitable that the backsheet is partially stretched until the portion in question becomes unacceptably thin and its strength is substantially reduced, so that, after the free end of the fastening tape has been adhered to the backsheet at said portion, even a slight tensile force acting on the diaper may be readily break said portion and, as a result, detach said free end from the backsheet. The tape fastening system of the prior art has been uneconomical and inconvenient since peeling off of the free end of the fastening tape from the backsheet of the diaper almost unexceptionally causes said breakage and makes readhesion impossible. In consequence, a person, for example, a mother often finds difficulty when she tries to fit the loosened diaper again to her baby's body after she has peeled off the free end of the fastening tape to examine the presence of her baby's excrements inside the diaper.
Certainly there have been proposed countermeasures for the drawbacks as mentioned above and one of these countermeasures is disclosed in Japanese Utility Model Laid-Open Application No. 55-75608. According to the disclosure of this prior invention, a non-adhesive surface of a reinforcing tape is adhered to an adhesive surface of the fastening tape extending along its free end, the free end of the fastening tape is adhered, in turn, to the backsheet of the diaper with interposition of an adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape, the free end of the fastening tape is peeled off from the backsheet of the diaper with the reinforcing tape remaining adhered to said backsheet of the diaper, and further adhesion/peeling off of said free end to and from said backsheet are always done with interposition of the reinforcing tape. However, it has been found that this prior invention involves problems which had not been easily solved by the inventors of the prior invention and the present invention - it is a surprise for the inventors - and will be described below.
Specifically, the prior invention proposes an arrangement such that an adhesive force per unit area with which the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape adheres to the backsheet of the diaper is higher than an adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the fastening tape extending along its free end adheres to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape to prevent the reinforcing tape from being peeled off from the backsheet of the diaper together with the free end of the fastening tape when said free end of the fastening tape is peeled off from said reinforcing tape previously adhered to said backsheet of the diaper. However, such an arrangement has problems such as the following.
Firstly, according to this prior invention, it is necessary to provide a sufficient difference between the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the fastening tape extending along its free end adheres to the nonadhesive surface of the reinforcing tape and the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape adheres to the backsheet of the diaper and such requirement restricts a range of choice for materials of the backsheet of the diaper, the adhesive used, and the reinforcing tape, on one side, and complicates the procedures of quantity control.
Secondly, also in this prior invention, it is necessary that the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the fastening tape extending along its free end adheres to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape should be substantially of the same order as the adhesive force required by the diaper of the prior art in which the adhesive surface of the fastening tape extending along its free end adheres directly to the backsheet of the diaper, so that, according to this prior invention, the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape adheres to the backsheet of diaper is necessarily higher than said adhesive force of the prior art.In this case, however, there have arisen troubles in that an excessive adhesive force between the adhesive surface and the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape prevents the reinforcing tape from being smoothly delivered from its supply roll in the course of assembling the desired tape fastening system. It may be said in this connection that the reinforcing tape and the fastening tape are continuously and circinately rolled, and delivered from their supply rolls and are cut to a necessary length when the tape fastening system is assembled with them.According to the prior invention, when said adhesive force is weakened to avoid the trouble as mentioned just above, the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface of the fastening tape extending along its free end adheres to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape will be necessarily lower than said adhesive force, resulting in that the fastening effect at each waistline end of the diaper could no longer sufficiently be maintained and this fastening effect might be lost during use of the diaper.
Thirdly, the user often finds a variable stretching in the backsheet of the diaper adjacent each waistline end due to a tensile force generated in this area when the user tries to refasten the diaper which has been loosened at said area. According to the prior invention, said stretching, no matter what its degree is, will cause the free end tip of the fastening tape to project beyond the corresponding end of the reinforcing tape by a length correspond- ing to the degree of said stretching and this projecting free end tip adheres directly to the backsheet of the diaper. This sometimes results in breakage of the backsheet, reduction of the latter's strength, and particularly results in that, as will be described later in detail, the reinforcing tape adhered to the backsheet is sometimes unintentionally peeled off from the latter when the free end of the fastening tape is peeled off from the backsheet of the diaper.
The major object of the present invention is to provide the tape fastening system so improved that the problems encountered by the prior invention as mentioned above may be solved thereby.
The essential feature of the present invention lies in the arrangement of the tape fastening system for the disposable diaper which at least comprises the topsheet, the backsheet and the core interposed between these two sheets, wherein said tape fastening system at least comprises the fastening tape and the reinforcing tape, said fastening tape is secured at one end to said backsheet, and the nonadhesive surface of said reinforcing tape is adhered to the adhesive surface of said fastening tape extending along its free end with the tip of said reinforcing tape projecting beyond the corresponding tip of said free end by a suitable length.
The present invention will be better understood from the following description taken with reference to the accompanying drawings which show preferred embodiments and in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a disposable diaper equipped with the tape fastening system according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view of the diaper equipped at each waistline end of the rear portion with the tape fastening system according to the present invention shown as before use; Figure 3 is a view similar to Fig 2 showing another embodiment of the tape fastening system according to the present invention; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the diaper fastened at each waistline end by the tape fastening system of Fig. 2 or 3; Figure 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a a further embodiment of the tape fastening system according to the present invention; and Figure 6 is a very similar to Fig. 3 showing still another embodiment of the tape fastening system according to the present invention.
Referring to Fig. 1 which is a perspective view showing a disposable diaper, as seen from its front, together with a tape fastening system according to the present invention applied thereto, the diaper 1 comprises a crotch portion 2, a front portion 3 and a rear portion 4, wherein said front portion 3 is fastened at each waistline end 5 by the tape fastening systen 7 to said rear portion 4 at each waistline end 6 thereof. Although the present invention is regardless, as a rule, of the construction of the diaper 1 itself, the latter is assumed here to have a construction the same as a conventional one, i.e., to comprise a moisture pervious topsheet to be in contact with the wearer's skin during use, a moisture impervious backsheet to be out of contact with wearer's skin and an absorptive core interposed between these two sheets.
The respective components are made of vari ous materials, e.g., nonwoven fabric for the moisture pervious topsheet, synthetic resin film for the moisture impervious backsheet and cellulosic fluff for the absorptive core.
Figs. 2 and 3 show, in section, the tape fastening system 7 applied to the rear portion 4 of the diaper 1 at each waistline end 6 thereof and as in the state before use. Reference numeral 8 designates the topsheet and 9 the backsheet. The topsheet 8 and the backsheet 9 are jointed to each other along their outer peripheries by means of adhesive, welding or the like. Though not shown in Fig. 2, said absorptive core is sometimes interposed between the topsheet 8 and the backsheet 9 also in the vicinity of said outer peripheries.
The tape fastening system 7 comprises a fastening tape 10, a reinforcing tape 11 and a release tape 12. The fastening tape 10 is made of material having relatively high tensile strength, for example, papery material as conventionally used and includes an adhesive surface 1 Oa, an attachment portion 13, a free end 14 and a non-adhesive grip tab 15 having a folded tip. The reinforcing tape 11 is made of a sheet comprising synthetic resin film, kraft paper or the like which is surfacetreated with suitable releasing agent, if desired, and presents an adhesive affinity. This reinforcing tape 11 is substantially coextensive with the fastening tape 10 in the transverse direction and, when said reinforcing tape is superposed on the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 as will be described later more in detail, the non-adhesive grip tab 16 of said reinforcing tape 11 projects beyond the non-adhesive grip tab 15 of said free end by 5 mm or longer. The release tape 12 has previously been surface-treated with releasing agent such as that of prior art and is dimensioned to cover the adhesive 1 a of the reinforcing tape 11 completely.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the release tape 12 is secured to the topsheet 8, the reinforcing tape 11 is adhered on the adhesive surface 1 1 a to the upper surface of said release tape 12, the attachment portion 13 of the fastening tape 10 is secured to the backsheet 9, and the free end 14 of said fastening tape 10 is folded inwards with the adhesive surface 1 0a thereof being adhered to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape 11. It should be understood in this embodiment that the release tape 12 may be replaced by quantity of releasing agent applied to a spot corresponding to said release tape 12.Fig. 3 shows another embodiment of the present invention in which the fastening tape 10 is adhered on its adhesive surface 1 Oa to the backsheet 9 so that the free end 14 of said fastening tape 10 projects outwards beyond each waistline end of the diaper, the reinforcing tape 11 is adhered on its non-adhesive surface to the rest portion of said adhesive surface 1 ova, and the release tape 12 is adhered to the adhesive surface 1 lea of said reinforcing tape 1 1.When the respective components are thus adhered to one another, the non-adhesive grip tab 16 of the reinforcing tape 11 projects beyond the non-adhesive grip tab 15 of the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 by a suitable length, preferably by 5 mm or longer in both embodiments shown in Figs. 2 and 3, since the reinforcing tape 11 is so dimensioned to be longer than the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 as had already been described.
Fig. 4 shows, in perspective view, one of the waistline ends 5 fastened by the tape fastening system 7 of Fig. 2 or 3 to the corresponding waistline end 6 of the diaper.
When the embodiment shown in Fig. 2 is used to achieve such fastening effect, the reinforcing tape 11 is peeled off from the release tape 12 with the non-adhesive grip tab 16 being held, and then the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 is adhered to the backsheet 9 at the associated waistline end 5 with said free end 14 remaining adhered to the reinforcing tape 11. When the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 is used, the same procedure as with the embodiment of Fig. 2 may be followed after the release tape 12 is peeled off from the reinforcing tape 11. To move the diaper from the wearer's body, or to make examination for the presence of excrements inside the diaper and then to refasten the loosened diaper, the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 may be peeled off from the reinforcing tape 11 with the non-adhesive grip tab 15 of said fastening tape 10 being fingerheld.
Fig. 5 shows, in section similar to Fig. 2, a further embodiment in which the release tape 1 2 is secured to the topsheet 8 with an end of said release tape 12 slightly displaced inwards relative to the corresponding edge of said topsheet 8, the reinforcing tape 11 slightly shorter than the release tape 12 is adhered to upper surface of said release tape 12 with an end of said reinforcing tape 11 slightly displaced inwards relative to the corresponding end of said release tape 12, and the attachment end 13 of the fastening tape 10 is secured to the backsheet 9, with the free end 14 of said fastening tape 10 being folded inwards, so as to be adhered to the reinforcing tape 11.
Fig. 6 shows, in section similar to Fig. 3, still another embodiment of the present invention, in which the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 with its attachment end 13 secured to the backsheet 9 extends outwards beyond the associated waistline end 6 so that the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape 11 may be adhered to the projecting portion of the adhesive surface 1 Oa of said fastening tape 10 and the release tape 12 may be adhered to the adhesive surface 1 1 a of said reinforcing tape 11.
The embodiments shown in Figs. 5 and 6 are substantially similar to those shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively, in their constructions as well as in their manners of use except that the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 is substantially coextensive both in the longitudinal and the transverse directions with the reinforcing tape 11 so that the adhesive surface 1 Oa of said free end 14 be substantially coextensive with the adhesive surface 1 1 a of said reinforcing tape 11 while the non-adhesive grip tab 16 of said reinforcing tape 11 extends beyond the non-adhesive grip tab 15 of said fastening tape 10 by a suitable length.
In the embodiments shown in Fig. 2 to Fig.
6, the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 1 a of the reinforcing tape 11 adheres to the backsheet 9 is not higher than the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 0a of the fastening tape 10 extending along the free end 14 thereof adheres to the non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing tape. The expression "is not higher than..." means that the adhesive force with which the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 a of the reinforcing tape 1 1 adheres to the backsheet of the diaper is substantially equal to the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 0a of the fastening tape 10 extending along its free end 14 adheres to the non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing tape 11 or the adhesive force of the former is rather lower than the adhesive force of the latter. The term "adhesive force" should be understood here as the adhesive force per unit area.
In the embodiments shown in Fig. 2 to Fig.
6, it is preferred to provide the reinforcing tape 11 wholly or partially with a colour which is distinguishable from a base colour of the backsheet 9 and further from the fastening tape and/or the release tape 12. Such a measure permits the user to determine the position to adhere the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 when in use. Preferably, the reinforcing tape 11 is provided at its nonadhesive grip tab 16 with said desired colour, if said reinforcing tape 11 is to be partially coloured.
With the tape fastening system according to the present invention of which the construction and the manner of use have been described hereinabove, the reinforcing tape 11 is not peeled off from the backsheet 9 but remains adhered thereto when the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 is peeled off from said reinforcing tape 11 previously adhered to said backsheet 9.Even if the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 a of the reinforcing tape 11 adheres to the backsheet 9 is not higher than the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 0a of the fastening tape 10 extending along its free end 14 adheres to the non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing tape 11, said reinforcing tape 11 would not be peeled off rom the backsheet 9, since the tip of said reinforcing tape 11 is arranged to project beyond the corresponding tip of the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 by a suitable length so that, when said free end is peeled off, the tip of the reinforcing tape 11 is not directly subjected to the force of said peeling off.Assuming that the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 is adhered with its tip aligned with or projecting beyond the tip of the reinforcing tape 11 (the case of the prior invention as previously mentioned), there is a danger that the reinforcing tape 11 might be subjected to a tensile force occurring when the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 is peeled off, said tensile force being sometimes so high, depending on the degree of adhesive force, that said reinforcing tape also is unintentionally peeled off from the backsheet 9, even if the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 1 a of said reinforcing tape 11 adheres to said backsheet 9 is higher than the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 0a of said fastening tape 10 extending along its free end 14 adheres to the non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing tape 11.Accordingly, the adhesive force of the former should be substantially higher than the adhesive force of the latter, in spite of drawbacks encountered by the prevously mentioned prior invention.
With the tape fastener system according to the present invention, it is unnecessary to adjust the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 a of the reinforcing tape 1 1 adheres to the backsheet 9 to a level higher than the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 Oa of the fastening tape 10 extending along its free end 14 adheres to the non-adhesive surface of said reinforcing tape 11, resulting in that the materials and other factors for the backsheet 9, the adhesives of the adhesive surfaces 1 Oa, 1 a and the reinforcing tape 11 itself can be selected in wide ranges, respectively, and the quality control is substantially facilitated. Additionally, the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 0a of the fastening tape 10 extending along its free end 14 adheres to the non-adhesive surface of the reinforcing tape 11 may be substantially equal to or higher than the adhesive force with which the adhesive surface 1 1 a of said reinforcing tape 11 adheres to the backsheet 9, according to the present invention. This means that said adhesive force of the former may be substantially equal to or higher than the adhesive force in the diaper well known in the art in which the adhesive surface 1 0a of the fastening tape 10 extending along its free end 14 is directly adhered to the backsheet 9 and the fastening effect on each waistline end of the diaper may be reliably maintained without the previously mentioned troubles encountered by the prior invention. It should be understood that, even if the adhesive force presented by the adhesive surface 1 Oa of the fastening tape 10 is adjusted to a higher level, an arrangement might be provided to assure that the fastening tape may be smoothly delivered from its supply roll without hindrance due to an excessive adhesive force occurring between said adhesive surface 1 0a and the non-adhesive surface of said fastening tape. Obviously, it is because the fastening tape 10 may be, in contrast with the reinforcing tape 11, surface-treated on its non-adhesive surface with a suitable releasing agent to increase the releasing property thereof.
The arrangement that the reinforcing tape 11 has its tip projecting beyond the corresponding tip of the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 by a suitable length assures that said reinforcing tape 11 may be adhered to the backsheet 9 with its tip so projecting, when the free end 14 of the fastening tape 10 is adhered to the backsheet 9 with interposition of the reinforcing tape 11. Accordingly, when, for example, it is desired to fit the loosened diaper again securely to the wearer's body, the tip of the free end 14 would not project beyond the corresponding tip of the reinforcing tape, even it the tensile force generated at each waistline end 5, 6 of the diaper thus fitted to the wearer's body causes a slight extension of the backsheet 9, and the inconveniences due to said projection as occurring in the case of the previously mentioned prior invention might be avoided.
