Abstract

Apparatus for measuring and indicating the instantaneous value of the fuel consumption of a motor vehicle comprises an electronic control unit having a performance- characteristic store which contains correlations, determined by measurement on the engine, existing between revolution speed, engine loading and quantity of fuel fed to the engine, means for supplying instantaneous speed and loading values to the said store and for supplying the consumption value associated with these speed and loading values to an indicating device as the consumption in relation to distance covered after multiplication by a factor proportional to the gear ratio or as the consumption per hour after multiplication by a factor proportional to speed. In the case of a mixture-compressing engine, means for supplying a value which characterises engine loading comprises a device sensing the position of the operating lever of a fuel-metering device or the vacuum in the induction passage of the engine. In the case of an air-compressing fuel- injection type of engine, means for supplying a value which characterises engine loading comprises a device sensing the position of a rod which controls the quantity of fuel injected.

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for measuring the instantaneous fuel consumption of a motor vehicle The invention relates to apparatus, which operates in dependence on the revolution speed, engine loading and/or gear ratio, for measuring and indicating the instantaneous fuel consumption of a vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine.
To acilieve economical use of energy resources, some motor vehicles are equipped with apparatus which indicates to the driver the instantaneous fuel consumption in order to facilitate attainment of fuel economy during driving.
Thus for a fuel-injection type of internal combustion engine, measuring meanslsknown from German Offenlegungsschrift 24 40 398, in which the output of an electric circuit, determined from engine loading, revolution speed and/or gear ratio, is proportional to the instantaneous fuel consumption and can be displayed by an indicator.
The present invention seeks to provide a measuring apparatus for the purpose set forth which permits of more accurate measurement of the instantaneous fuel consumption.
According to the invention, apparatus for measuring and indicating the instantaneos value of the fuel consumption of a motor vehicle, in dependence upon revolution speed, loading and/or gear ratio, comprises an electronic control unit having a performance-characteristic store which contains existing correlations, determined by measurment on the engine, between revolution speed, engine loading and quantity of fuel fed to the engine, means for supplying existing instantaneous speed and loading values to the said store and for supplying the consumption value associated with these speed and loading values to an indicating device as the consumption in relation to distance covered after multiplication by a factor proportional to the gear ratio or as the consumption per hour after multiplication by a factor proportional to speed.
According to the O.S. 2440 398, the consumption value is set proportionally to the position of the control rod of the fuel-injection pump over the whole range of engine speed. In practice, however, fuel consumption varies considerably with change in engine speed, with the control-rod position constant, so that proportionality no longer exists and consequently accurate measurement is also not possible.
Advantageously, the value which characterises engine loading, in the case of a mixture-compressing internal combustion engine, can be suppled by the displacement or position of the operating lever of the fuei-metering device or by the vacuum in the inlet passage of the engine or, in the case of an air-compressing fuelinjection-type of engine, by the displacement or position of the control rod which controls the injection pump.
Highly accurate measurement, stabie in time, of instantaneous tue consumption can be achieved with the aid of the aforesaid apparatus consisting essentially of the electronic control unit and performance-characteristic store.
One embodiment of the invention by way of example will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing.
The drawing shows an air-compressing fuel injection type of internal combustion engine 1, gear box 2, fuel-injection pump 3 and fuel regulator 4.
An electronic control unit 5 has a performance characteristic store 6 which already contains information, represented by a characteristic diagram, which has been determined by bench tests on the engine and which relates to speed/regulation or control displacement or distance/quantity injected, the characteristic curves in the diagram corresponding to constant control displacements.
The diagram shown illustrates the relationship of fuel quantity injected in mm3 per revolution to time in minutes for a famiiy of curves for a number of predetermined engine conditions, more specifically different displacements of the control rod 9 The revolution speed of the engine 1 is detected by a sensor 7, while the displacement or position of the control rod 9 on the pump 3, which determines the quantity of fuel injected, is detected by a sensor 8 and the gear ratio engaged in the gearing 2 by a sensor 10. The instantaneous speed and loading values are fed into the store 6 containing the predetermined characteristics. From the stored characteristics, the associated value is extracted which corresponds to the injected quantity in volume units per engine revolution and which indicates the fuel consumption in relation to distance covered after multiplication by a factor dependent on the gear ratio sensed by the sensor 10. The fuel consumption, for example in litres per 100 km, is indicated on an indicator 1 1.
In the case of an air-inducing engine, the position of the operating lever controlling the fuel metering device or the value of the vacuum in the induction passage of the engine can be used in the stored-characteristic diagram 6 as the value which characterises the engine loading.
