Abstract

A fume-extraction apparatus has a canopy (1) with an outlet duct (2) leading to an extractor fan, and a downwardly extending back wall (3). A vertical baffle (7) is spaced from the back wall and a top baffle (6) is spaced below the canopy outlet. The apparatus includes a flap or damper (8) which is pivoted for movement between a first position in which it closes a gap between the back wall and the back baffle plate and a second position in which it closes a gap between the top baffle plate and the back baffle plate. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or Relating to Fume Extraction Apparatus This invention relates to fume-extraction apparatus of the fume-hood variety.
The invention sets out to provide fumeextraction apparatus which will provide normal collection or extraction of fumes from the area immediately beneath the hood or give an air-flow across a working surface e.g. a sink/drainer or bench some distance beneath the hood.
This invention consists in a fume-extraction apparatus comprising a fume canopy having an outlet duct leading to an extractor fan, a back wall extending downwards from the canopy, a back baffle-plate spaced inwardly from the back wall, and a top baffle-plate spaced downwardly from the outlet duct, wherein the apparatus includes a flap or damper which is pivoted for movement between a first position in which it closes a gap between the back wall and the back baffle-plate, and a second position in which it closes a gap between the top baffle-plate and the back baffleplate.
Preferably the back baffle plate is substantially vertical and parallel to the back wall.
Preferably the top baffle plate is substantially horizontal and is located within and, slightly upward of the front lip of, the canopy.
Preferably the flap or damper is hinged about the top edge of the back baffle plate, for movement between contact with the back wall or canopy and contact with the top plate inner edge.
Preferably the canopy tapers upwardly towards the outlet duct.
Preferably the flap is provided with remote actuation by means of a lever and connecting rods, so that its position can be determined by moving the lever between two positions. The lever is preferably located on the working surface beneath the canopy.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying single figure of diagrammatic drawing which shows a section through a fume-extraction apparatus according to this invention.
In the drawing, a canopy 1 having an outlet duct 2, and connected to a back wall 3 and a front lip 4 is mounted above a working area 5, which may include a bench or sink/drainer unit. Within the canopy 1 is mounted a substantially horizontal top baffle plate 6 which is upwardly spaced from the level of lip 4. Spaced from the back wall 3 is a substantially-vertical back baffle plate 7 thus providing a vertical space between wall 3 and plate 7. There is a gap between the top of plate 7 and inner edge of plate 6 which is closable by the flap or damper 8, the latter being hinged about the top edge of plate 7 for movement between contact with the inner edge of plate 6 and the back wall 3. Remote control of the flap 8 is provided for by means of the lever 9 and the connecting rod 10 which connects with bracket 11 on flap 8.
In operation the air flow induced by the fan (not shown) sucking air through duct 2 can be directed either upwardly via the two gaps between canopy 1 and baffle plate 6 (when the flap is in its back wall contact position) or over the working surface 5 and upwardly through the space between back wall 3 and back-plate 7 (when the flap is in its top-plate contact position).
The latter situation is shown in the drawing, with air being drawn over the working area and vertically upwards between 3 and 7 before entering canopy 1 and being expelled through the duct 2. In this mode of operation positive ventilation of the working area 5 is achieved. In the other mode of operation the canopy functions as a normal fume-hood.
Claims
1. Fume extraction apparatus comprising a fume canopy having an outlet duct leading to an extractor fan, a back wall extending downwards from the canopy, a back baffle-plate spaced inwardly from the back wall, and a top baffle-plate spaced downwardly from the outlet duct, wherein the apparatus includes a flap or damper which is pivoted for movement between a first position in which it closes a gap between the back wall and the back baffle-plate and a second position in which it closes a gap between the top baffle-plate and the back baffle-plate.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the back baffle plate is substantially vertical and parallel to the back wall.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the top baffle plate is substantially horizontal and is spaced below the outlet duct and above a front lip of the canopy.
4. Apparatus as claimed in any one preceding claim wherein the flap or damper is hinged about the top edge of the back baffle plate, for movement between contact with the back wall or canopy and contact with the inner edge of the top baffle plate.
5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the canopy tapers upwards towards the outlet duct.
6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pivoting movement of the flap or damper is remotely actuated by means of a system of a lever and connecting rod or rods.
7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6 wherein the actuating lever is located on a working surface beneath the canopy.
8. Fume-extraction apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.

This invention consists in a fume-extraction apparatus comprising a fume canopy having an outlet duct leading to an extractor fan, a back wall extending downwards from the canopy, a back baffle-plate spaced inwardly from the back wall, and a top baffle-plate spaced downwardly from the outlet duct, wherein the apparatus includes a flap or damper which is pivoted for movement between a first position in which it closes a gap between the back wall and the back baffle-plate, and a second position in which it closes a gap between the top baffle-plate and the back baffleplate. Preferably the back baffle plate is substantially vertical and parallel to the back wall. Preferably the top baffle plate is substantially horizontal and is located within and, slightly upward of the front lip of, the canopy. Preferably the flap or damper is hinged about the top edge of the back baffle plate, for movement between contact with the back wall or canopy and contact with the top plate inner edge. Within the canopy 1 is mounted a substantially horizontal top baffle plate 6 which is upwardly spaced from the level of lip 4. Spaced from the back wall 3 is a substantially-vertical back baffle plate 7 thus providing a vertical space between wall 3 and plate 7. There is a gap between the top of plate 7 and inner edge of plate 6 which is closable by the flap or damper 8, the latter being hinged about the top edge of plate 7 for movement between contact with the inner edge of plate 6 and the back wall 3. Remote control of the flap 8 is provided for by means of the lever 9 and the connecting rod 10 which connects with bracket 11 on flap 8. In operation the air flow induced by the fan (not shown) sucking air through duct 2 can be directed either upwardly via the two gaps between canopy 1 and baffle plate 6 (when the flap is in its back wall contact position) or over the working surface 5 and upwardly through the space between back wall 3 and back-plate 7 (when the flap is in its top-plate contact position). 1. Fume extraction apparatus comprising a fume canopy having an outlet duct leading to an extractor fan, a back wall extending downwards from the canopy, a back baffle-plate spaced inwardly from the back wall, and a top baffle-plate spaced downwardly from the outlet duct, wherein the apparatus includes a flap or damper which is pivoted for movement between a first position in which it closes a gap between the back wall and the back baffle-plate and a second position in which it closes a gap between the top baffle-plate and the back baffle-plate.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the back baffle plate is substantially vertical and parallel to the back wall.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the top baffle plate is substantially horizontal and is spaced below the outlet duct and above a front lip of the canopy.
4. Apparatus as claimed in any one preceding claim wherein the flap or damper is hinged about the top edge of the back baffle plate, for movement between contact with the back wall or canopy and contact with the inner edge of the top baffle plate.
5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 in which the canopy tapers upwards towards the outlet duct.
6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pivoting movement of the flap or damper is remotely actuated by means of a system of a lever and connecting rod or rods.
7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6 wherein the actuating lever is located on a working surface beneath the canopy.
8. Fume-extraction apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
