Abstract

A reflector and bulb carrying assembly comprises a centrally apertured parabolic reflector (10) having a rearwardly extending bulb housing (16) both made of plastics material. A cylindrical member (22) which screw-threadedly engages the bulb housing (16) accurately locates the metal base (28) of the light bulb by means of a centrally disposed aperture (26) which is of a diameter only slightly larger than the bulb base (28). A contact plate (34) and contact housing (40) are mounted on the bulb locating member (22) by means of projections (32) which pass through apertures (38) in the plate (34) and are fixedly mounted in bosses (48) in the contact housing (40). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An improved reflector and bulb carrying assembly for lamps and torches The present invention relates to a reflector and bulb carrying assembly as used in battery operated hand lamps and torches, also vehicle lamps.
A known assembly comprises a parabolic reflector having a centrally disposed aperture into which is fixedly mounted a cylindrical metal sleeve which, in use, accommodates a bulb. The internal surface of the sleeve is threaded to receive a bulb and contact housing of plastics material which is screw-threadedly engaged with the internal threads of the metal sleeve. An annular contact plate surrounds the outer surface of the metal sleeve with a press fit.
Such an arrangement suffers from the following disadvantages:- Firstly, with a reflector of plastics material and a metal sleeve insert, there exists the possibility of the reflector cracking.
Secondiy, it is not possible to effect accurate positioning of the bulb relative to the reflector Thirdly, the screwing of the bulb and contact housing into the metal sleeve tends to split the latter. Lastly, it is not possible to ensure a good electrical contact between the contact plate and sleeve.
Thus, the main object of the present invention is to provide a reflector and bulb carrying assembly which overcomes the disadvantages referred to above.
A further object of the invention is to provide a reflector and bulb carrying assembly of robust construction and low cost, and which is easy to assemble.
The present invention consists in a reflector and bulb carrying assembly for lamps and torches comprising, a centrally apertured, parabolic reflector of plastics material having a cylindrical, externally threaded bulb housing aloof plastics material extending rearwardly from said reflector, an internally threaded cylindrical member mounted on said bulb housing and having means for locating the axial position of the bulb in said housing, means on said bulb locating member for mounting a metal contact plate and a contact housing mounted on said bulb locating member.
In the accompanying drawings:- Fig. 1 is a dissembled view of a reflector and bulb carrying assembly according to the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 1, but in an assembled condition.
In carrying the invention into effect according to one convenient mode, by way of example, the reflector and bulb carrier assembly comprises, a parabolic reflector 10 formed of a plastics material with a metalised reflecting surface and provided with a centrally disposed aperture surrounded by a boss 12. The periphery of the reflector 10 has an outwardly extending flange 14 which, in use, is connected in known manner to a transparent cover by an annular sealing assembly (not shown).
The base of the reflector 10 is integral with, or fixedly connected to a rearwardly extending, cylindrical bulb housing 1 6 the forward end of which, adjacent the reflector 10, has an inwardly directed flange 1 8. The outer surface of the bulb housing 1 6 is provided with a screw thread 20 which receives an internally threaded, cylindrical bulb locating member 22, the end wall 24 of which is provided with a centrally disposed aperture 26 of a diameter only slightly larger than the diameter of the metal base or body 28 of the light bulb being used in order to provide an accurate, axial location thereof. As will be clearly seen from Fig. 2, the opposite end of the body 28 is located by means of a metal flange 30 which engages the flange 1 8.
The end wall 24 of the member 22 is provided with four, equally spaced projections 32 which accurately locate a contact plate 34 having a centrally disposed aperture 36 surrounded by four equally spaced apertures 38 which receive the projections 32.
A cylindrical contact housing 40 has a slit 42 in its lower wall through which passes the end of a strip contact 44 the other of which engages the central contact of the light bulb. Four, equally spaced cylindrical bosses 48 are positioned within the housing 40 and receive, respectively, the four projections 32 of the bulb locating member 22.
The bulb locating member 22, contact plate 34, strip contact 44 and contact housing 40 form a unitary sub-assembly which is constructed as follows:-- First the strip contact 44 is located in the housing 40 with one end extending through the slit 42 and then the contact plate 34 is mounted on the bulb locating member 22 by the four projections 32 of the latter passing through the apertures 38 in the plate 34. The bosses 48 in the housing 40 now receive the projections 32 and are fixedly connected thereto by means of a plastics cement or ultrasonic welding.
Thereafter, the light bulb is placed in the bulb housing 22 and the sub-assembly just described is screwed onto the external screw threads 20 with the aperture 26 in the end wall 24 of the member 22 accurately locating the body 28 of the light bulb. It will be readily appreciated that the reflector and bulb carrier assembly just described is then located in a lamp or torch casing in known manner with the contact plate 34 and strip contact 44 positioned for electrical contact with the switch arrangement and battery of the lamp or torch.
