Description
SPECIFICATION
Hanging display assembly
The present invention relates to a hanging display assembly, and particularly to a display assembly of the character described which permits display items to be supported from a ceiling or other overhead support structure.
The display of items for visual observation has become an important area of development because of the increasing cost of shelf and floor space where most commercially related items presently are displayed for public observation. It has become apparent that greater utilization must be made of air space around overhead structures for displaying items or for disseminating information. One area in which air space has been utilized for display purposes concerns the use of closed-circuit television sets or screens for disseminating pertinent information to the observer, such as customers in a commercial establishment.
One of the problems with display items such as television sets, or the like, is the unidirectional nature of the display involved.
There is a need to provide a hanging display assembly which is totally adjustable so as to vary the direction in which the display items face and thereby provide an omni-directional adjustable assembly. The ease of adjustment is important because of the elevated nature of such display devices. In addition, it would be desirable for the display assembly to be adjustable both horizontally and vertically in relation to the overhead ceiling or other support structure.
Closed circuit television sets have received wide acceptance for dissemination of information, such as flight information at air terminals. A novel concept contemplated by the present disclosure is to utilize a series of closed circuit television sets above a series of check-out counters at a commercial establishment for disseminating information regarding prices, sales, or other pertinent facts which are desired to be related to a customer.
The present invention is directed to providing a new and improved hanging display assembly of the character described to solve the needs and problems enumerated above.
However, it is to be understood that the hanging display assembly of the present invention, due to its simple construction and novel adjustment features is readily applicable for a wide range of display purposes, particularly where valuable air space is desired to be utilized. Such hanging displays also tend to draw considerable attention by the general public.
The hanging display assembly of this invention is adjustable horizontally and vertically in relation to an overhead support structure, such as a ceiling. The display assembly includes universal means for adjusting the angular orientation of the display means generally about both horizontal and vertical axes and thereby provides for omni-directional adjustments.
In the exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the hanging display assembly includes a horizontal track in the form of a generally inverted channel. At least one vertical support member depends from the horizontal track and is adjustably movable along the track to change the horizontal location of the vertical support member. Display means is connected to the lower end of the vertical support member for supporting one or more display items and includes universal means for adjusting the angular orientation of the display means relative to the vertical support means generally about both horizontal and vertical axes.
Means is provided for adjusting the length of the vertical support member and selectively locking the member in any one of a plurality of length adjusted positions.
Means also is provided for locking the vertical support member in any selected location along the horizontal track, and for locking the display means in any adjusted angular orientation relative to the vertical support member.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the display means at the lower end of the vertical support member includes a generally inverted U-shaped member having a pair of depending leg portions and a bight portion extending between the leg portions. The bight portion is pivotally connected intermediate the ends thereof to the vertical support member for rotation about a generally vertical axis. A support tray for the display items is pivotally connected between the leg portions of the Ushaped member, for rotation about a generally horizontal axis.
Thus, it is apparent that a new and improved display assembly has been provided to solve the needs and problems enumerated above, and to provide a wide range of adjustments not heretofore available.
The features of this invention which are believed to be novel are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention, together with its objects and the advantages thereof, may be best understood by reference to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference numerals identify like elements in the figures and in which::
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hanging display assembly of the present invention, including means for hanging display items such as television sets in a spaced series along an overhead support structure;
Figure 2 is a fragmented perspective view of an end of a horizontal track section, showing the means for adjustably mounting a vertical support member depending therefrom;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the lower end of a single telescoped vertical support member;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a pair of vertical support members and associated bracket means, with a support tray on one of the bracket means;
Figure 5 is a fragmented elevational view of a bracket means adjustably mounted on the lower end of a telescoped vertical support member; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a pair of adjustable display means mounted on the lower ends of a pair of vertical support members, with the display means in different adjusted angular orientations.
Referring to the drawings in greater detail, and first to Fig. 1, a hanging display assembly in accordance with the present invention is shown for adjustably supporting one or more display items, such as television sets "T", or the like. The hanging display assembly generally includes a horizontal track 10 generally in the form of an inverted channel. As described in greater detail hereinafter, the horizontal track is secured to a ceiling "C" or other overhead support structure by means of bolts 1 2. A plurality of vertical support members, generally designated 14, depend from the horizontal track at spaced locations therealong. An adjustable display means, generally designated 16, is connected to the lower end of the vertical support members 14 for supporting one or more display items, such as television sets T.
As described in greater detail hereinafter, each vertical support member 1 4 is movable and can be locked in any desired position along horizontal 1 2. The vertical support members also can be adjusted to vary the length thereof. In addition, display means 1 6 is connected to the lower end of each vertical support member for adjustment of the angular orientation thereof relative to the vertical support member generally about both horizontal and vertical axes.
Referring to Fig. 2, the horizontal track 10 is comprised of a plurality of track sections 1 8 which are individually secured to the overhead structure by means of bolts 1 2 which pass through mounting plates 22, the mounting plates spanning and engaging the underside of the track section. The bolts pass through the channel shaped track sections for securing the sections to an overhead structure. In the event that a "false" ceiling is employed, bolts 1 2 may be extended sufficiently in order to secure into frame members, studs or other overhead structural components.
Vertical support members 14 are connected to horizontal track 10 for adjustment therealong by means of a pair of bracket plates 24a and 24b. To this end, each track section 1 8 has a pair of opposed, inwardly directed flanges 26 which are sandwiched between bracket plates 24a, 24b. Bracket plate 24a Is secured to the top of vertical support member 14 and bracket plate 24b is freely movable within and along the inside of the horizontal track. A pair of clamping bolts 28 pass through bracket plates 24a, 24b on opposite sides of the vertical support member, for tightening the bracket plates together and clamp track flanges 26 therebetween. This described structure permits the vertical support members to be moved freely along the horizontal track to any location therealong and locked in position at any desired location.
Referring to Fig. 3, each vertical support member 1 4 comprises a generally rectangular hollow upper portion 30 within which is slidably received a lower telescoping portion 32.
The telescoping nature of the vertical support member permits adjustment of the length thereof to thereby adjust the display height of display means 1 6.
In order to lock vertical support member 1 4 in any adjusted length thereof, lower telescoping portion 32 is provided with a plurality of horizontal apertures 34 extending therethrough in a series lengthwise of the vertical support member. A removable bolt 36 extends through apertures in the upper portion 30 of the vertical support member for alignment with selected ones of the apertures 34 and thereby lock upper and lower portions 30 and 32, respectively, of the vertical support member in any desired adjustable length thereof.
As seen in Fig. 3, both portions 30, 32 of the vertical support member are hollow and the upper portion is in communication with the generally hollow channel shaped track 10 so that electrical wiring "W" can be threaded therethrough to electrically connect display items, such as television sets T to appropriate outlets (not shown), which may be disposed at the end of the horizontal track or hidden therewith in.
Referring to Fig. 4, a pair of vertical support members 14 are shown with portions of display means 1 6 connected to the lower ends thereof. More particularly, display means 1 6 includes bracket means in the form of a generally inverted U-shaped member having a pair of depending leg portions 38 joined by an upper bight portion 40. The bight portion is connected intermediate the ends thereof to the lower end of vertical support member 14.
A support tray 42 is connected between leg portions 38 by means of upstanding arms 44 on opposite ends of the tray. Arms 44 of tray 42 are pivotally connected to legs 38 by means of bolts 46 or other appropriate means for providing a pivot connection therebetween. In this manner, the angular orientation of tray 42 can be adjusted about a generally horizontal pivot axis, defined by the pivot connection between arms 44 and legs 38. It is important to note that providing upstan(lin(l arnls 44, the pivot connection for tray 42 can be placed generally near the center of gravity of a heavy display item, such as a television set T. This is important to provide for ease of manipulation and adjustment by a user of the display assembly.
Tray 42 is shown as a preferred embodiment of support means for a display item such as a television set T. However, it is to be understood that a wide range of supporting structures can be employed with the universally mounted display assembly of the present invention to support a wide variety of display items and permit the items to be position adjusted in an omni-directional fashion.
To this end, and referring to Fig. 5, bight portion 40, which comprises part of the Ushaped member of display means 16, is connected to the telescoped lower portion 34 of vertical support member 1 4 by means of a large-headed bolt 50 threaded into a nipple 52 which can be secured, as by welding, to the inside of the lower end of telescoping portion 32. Bolt 50 passes freely through bight portion 40 so that display means 1 6 is provided with adjustment of the angular orientation thereof in relation to vertical support member 1 4 about a generally vertical axis. By loosening bolt 50, display means, through bight portion 40, is free to rotate to any horizontal angular orientation. By tightening bolt 50, the display means can be locked in any said angular orientation.
Referring to Fig. 6, a pair of differently adjusted display devices 1 6 are shown so as to direct two different television sets in different directions. Thus, it can be seen that by pivotally mounting tray 42 on a horizontal axis to legs 38, and by pivotally mounting bight portion 40 to the lower end of vertical support member 10, universal means is provided for display means 1 6 to adjust the angular orientation of display items in a universal, omni-directional orientation. The length of the vertical support members can be adjusted to vary the display height of the individual display items and, as described above, the horizontal location of the vertical support member, and thus the display items themselves, can be adjusted longitudinally or horizontally along track 10. This novel combination of structural supporting and adjustment features afford a versatility in hanging display assemblies not heretofore available.
It will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or central characteristics thereof. The present examples and embodiments, therefor, are to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and the invention is not to be limited to the details given herein.
