Abstract

A frame for framing an areal article, particularly a pane of glass, comprises four frame profile members (3) which are mitred at their ends and are held together at the frame corners by angled connecting elements (4) fittingly engaged into the interior spaces of the members (3). The elements (4) are fastened in the members (3) by means of projections (5) formed by depressions applied at the outside of the members, for example beads or tongues. The projections (5) are disposed in the frame members (3) on both sides of all frame corners and locate both arms of the elements (4) at two diagonally opposed frame corners but only two mutually parallel arms of the elements (4) at the other two diagonally opposed frame corners. The other two parallel arms of the last-mentioned elements are stepped from their free ends as far as the projections (5) of the members (3) and are held in the members by detachable fastening elements (7). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A frame The present invention relates to a frame, especially a frame for an areal article such as a pane of glass.
A known type of frame comprises frame members held together at the frame corners by connecting elements fastened to the members by projections thereof. Corner connections of this kind, which are used mainly for hollow or partly hollow frame members in door or window construction, are described in DE-OS 20 01 608 and DE-GM 80 10 797. The corner connections shown in these specifications are not constructed to be detachable, which is particularly evident through the construction of the devices, as explained in DEMOS 20 01 608, serving for the assembly of the frame. The permanent nature of the frame structure does, however, have the disadvantage that a glass pane inserted in the frame cannot be replaced if damaged or at least can be replaced only with great difficulty.
If detachable corner connections of the kind in question are to be produced, then it is known from DE-GM 1 8 82 280 to locate in the frame members one limb of each connecting element by means of depressions and the other angle limb by means of a screw connection. However, this manner of connection has the consequence of an appreciably increased effort when it is performed at all four frame corners in the disclosed manner.
There is accordingly a need for a frame which can be disassembled for repair or replacement of the framed article and which preferably can be assembled with the use of the device disclosed in DE-OS2001 608.
According to the present invention there is provided a frame comprising four mitred hollow frame members which are each provided in the region of each end thereof with a projection projecting into the interior space of the member and which are interconnected at their ends by angle connecting elements each arranged at a respective corner of the frame and comprising two arms engaged in the interior spaces of the two frame members defining the respective corner, all the arms of one pair of diagonally opposite elements and two mutually parallel arms of the other pair of elements being held in the respective frame members by said projections and the other two arms of said other pair of elements being held in the respective frame members by removable fastening devices and being so shaped as to permit withdrawal of the arms from the respective frame members past the projections thereof.
Preferably, disposed in the frame members to both sides of all frame corners are depressions which form the projections, the depressions being formed by dimples in wall portions of the frame members or by tongues bent out of such wall portions.
Expediently, screws or taper pins passing through the frame members and the connecting elements are used as the fastening devices. For preference, those arms of the connecting elements which are held in the frame members by the fastening devices each have a bevel adjoining a stepped surface at the free end thereof.
A frame embodying the present invention may have, as its most significant advantage, two frame corners structured to be detachable in simplest manner, whereby repair operations can be undertaken free of problems at any tine.
Nevertheless, there remains the possibility of using the device disclosed from the DE-OS 20 01 608 without re-equipment operations at all four frame corners.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a frame according to the said embodiment, equipped with a glass plane.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, to an enlarged scale, of the two lower corners of the frame of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a cross-section, to an enlarged scale, on the line I-Il of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the frame in a disassembled state.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a frame 1 which surrounds a glass plane 2 and which is intended for use as, for example, a sliding window or an ancillary window. The frame 1 consists of four profile-section frame members 3 of equal length, the members being mitred at their ends. To hold the frame members together, angled connecting elements 4 are fittingly engaged in the interior spaces of the members 3, the crosssection of which is shown in Fig. 3, and are arranged at the frame corners A, B, C and D.
Projections in the form of tongues 5 are applied by means of a known corner-connecting machine acting on the outside of the members 3, the tongues being provided at both sides of all four frame corners A, B, C and D. The tongues 5 press into recesses 6 in the connecting elements 4 and in this manner locate in the members 3 both limbs of the connecting elements 4 at the two diagonally opposed frame corners A and C, but only two mutually parallel limbs of the connecting elements 4 at the other two frame corners B and D. The remaining two parallel limbs of the connecting elements 4 at the frame corners B and D are stepped from their free ends as far as the tongues 5 of the members 3, so that the tongues 5 are ineffective at these places of the frame 1.
Instead, taper pins 7 are used at these locations, the pins being driven into place to pass through the members 3 and the connecting elements 4 and to tighten these together.
If it should prove necessary to replace the glass plane 2, then it is only necessary to pull out the taper pins 7 in order to be able to disconnect the frame members at the corners B and D and draw the two frame halves apart in the arrow direction according to Fig. 4. After replacement of the pane 2, the two frame halves can be plugged together again in reverse direction. This can be facilitated if the limbs serving for the reception of the taper pins 7 each have a bevel 9 adjoining the stepped surfaces 8. After driving of the taper pins 7 back into the members 3 and connecting elements 4 at the corners B and D, the frame 1 is again fully assembled and reusable.
With this form of connection at the corners of the frame, frame members with simple crosssections, as for example shown in Fig. 3, can be used and loose sealing or connecting strips dispensed with, such strips otherwise being necessary for replacement of the pane 2. Further advantageous aspects are -apparent for frames which are used as sliding windows, as profiled grooves 10 extending on the outside of the frame members 3 can serve for the reception and fastening of runners. The partially detachable corner connections are also advantageous for assembly and occasional repair of such runners.
