Abstract
A roller for the pressure treatment of fabric webs comprises a roller casing 1 which encloses a rigid rotational axle 4 and has a covering 2 made of rubber or rubber-like plastics material. The casing 1 is designed with a doubly tapering inner peripheral surface and is supported against the axle 4 by two supporting rings 7 which taper in the same direction and are displaceable towards or away from one another in the axial direction to expand or contract the roller by means of adjusting spindles 8. The conical surfaces of the casing 1 or the rings 7 may be grooved to allow the flow of lubricant via channel 14. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Roller for the pressure treatment of fabric webs
The invention relates to rollers for the pressure treatment of fabric webs, comprising a roller casing which encloses a rigid rotational axle and has a covering which is made of rubber or rubber-like plastics materials and which forms the effective roller periphery.
Rollers having elastomeric coverings are known for many purposes in various technical fields of application, thus, for example, for manufacturing and treating paper and textiles, in the printing industry for rotational printing machines, and the like. Apart from cases of only secondary importance, the common problem again and again is the requiremenu to compensate for the inevitable deflection, caused by the rolling pressure of the rotational axle of the roller so as to preclude resultant changes in the external contours of the roller casing in the operating region and their disadvantageous effects upon the operating result. According to known proposals (e.g. German Patent Specification No.
2,254,393), the roller casing for this purpose is supported against the rotational axle, designed in this case as a fixed support, by a plurality of hydrostatic supporting elements in the form of piston members which have pressure medium supplied thereto. This arrangement is equally suitable for rigid metallic roller casings as for roller casings which are made of elastomeric materials and are possibly also provided with metallic or other reinforcing inserts, and it has in fact been thoroughly approved in practice under the most varied conditions. However, considerable structural expenditure and technical guidance work are involved in arranging the supporting elements so that they are slidingly guided in a sealed manner in cylinders and in supplying them with pressure medium.By comparison the object of the invention is to achieve, by substantially simpler mechanical means, an equivalent bending compensation with a curvature of the roller periphery - the so-called swell - which is adjustable within limits, as desirable, without any lost effect.
According to the present invention there is provided a roller for the pressure treatment of fabric webs, comprising a roller casing which encloses a rigid rotational axle and has a covering which is made of rubber or rubber-like plastics materials and which forms the effective roller periphery, in which the roller casing is designed with a doubly tapering inner peripheral surface and is supported against the rotational axle by two supporting rings which taper in the same direction and are displaceable towards or away from one another in the axial direction.
In this case, the inner peripheral surface of the roller casing is advantageously tapered so as to extend from its central portion towards both sides, whilst one or more adjusting spindles with a screw thread of a different pitch direction in the region of the two supporting rings are inserted paraxially into the tapering supporting rings and guided on the rotational axle.
By surprisingly simple means, the invention provides a perfect substitution for the known complex and expensive hydrostatic supporting elements which are susceptible to faults. Because of the axial displacement inwardly or outwardly of the tapering supporting rings one relative to the other by means of the inserted adjusting spindles, the supporting force which acts radially against the doubly tapering inner peripheral surface of the roller casing, and therewith the extent of the swell as the advance compensation for the axle bending, may be changed as desired. To reduce the friction between the conical surfaces which slide one upon the other, it is suitable to design the tapering surface, facing the roller casing, of the supporting rings in a convex spherical manner with a slight curvature corresponding to the swell predetermined mathematically.
The conical or tapering shape is fundamentally, therefore, not abandoned. It is also advisable to provide the supporting rings or the roller casing, on the respective associated conical or tapering surface, with continuous grooves for accommodating and conducting a coolant and/or lubricant. In a manner known per se, the gaseous or liquid coolant or lubricant may be supplied from an external source through hollow bores in the rotational axle and be circulated in a closed circuit.
The present invention will be further illustrated by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single Figure is a partial, longitudinal section through a printing roller in accordance with the present invention.
The roller shown, which serves, for example, as a pressure roller in a rotational printing machine, substantially comprises a roller casing 1 having a cohesive, elastomeric outer casing 2 which has been either slipped on or adhesively connected to the roller casing 1. The casing 2 encloses, with radial spacing, rotational axle 4 which is rotatably mounted in fixed bearings 3, and is held on the rotational axle 4 by means of clamping discs 5 which are attached on both sides and have an associated screw-locking ring 6. The roller casing 1 is designed with an inner peripheral surface which extends on both sides in a symmetrically doubly tapering or bi-conical manner and is supported against the rotational axle 4 in the radial direction by two similarly tapering supporting rings 7. The two tapering supporting rings 7 are joined together by a plurality of adjusting spindles 8, having a counter-thread, which are distributed at intervals along an arc and are inserted into continuous threaded bores, and, by rotating the adjusting spindles in one or other direction on the rotational axle 4, the supporting rings 7 may be moved towards each other or away from each other.
The changes thus caused in their reciprocal spacing also result simultaneously in radial deformations in the roller casing 1 and result indirectly in changes in the swell of the elastomeric outer casing 2.
A coolant or lubricant may be introduced in the direction of the arrows P,P via hollow bores 14 in the rotational axle 4 and be circulated in a closed circuit by means of longitudinal grooves, which are not shown in more detail, in the conical surfaces which slide one upon the other.
