Abstract

A container such as a bottle 10 having a neck with an external screw- thread 21 is provided with a rolled-on pilferproof closure 11, the pilferproofing element of which comprises a band 14 secured to the skirt of the main part of the closure by a series of frangible bridges 16. The free bottom edge of the band is deformed into abutment with a downwardly-facing shoulder on the container, and an intermediate part 22 of the band spaced below the bridges is deformed into a circumferential groove 18 in the external surface of the neck of the container. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or Relating to Closured Containers This invention relates to containers, such as bottles, equipped with screw-threaded closures of the type, known as rolled-on pilferproof closures, having a band which is attached to the main part of the closure by a number of frangible bridges which break to leave the band on the container when the main part of the closure is unscrewed.
According to this invention there is provided a container having an externally screw-threaded neck on which is disposed a closure having a top and a depending skirt, a portion of which skirt is rolled into conformity with the screw-thread on the neck, and said closure having a band which is connected to the screw-threaded portion at its axial edge further from the top of the closure by a number of circumferentially spaced frangible bridges, said band having its free edge portion deformed into engagement with a shoulder which is formed on the container and which faces axially away from the top of the closure, and said band having an intermediate portion thereof axially spaced from said bridges and from said shoulder which portion is deformed into an annular groove on the neck of the container.
One embodiment of the invention wiil now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows, on an enlarged scale and in axial half-section, the neck portion of a closure bottle embodying the invention, and Figure 2 is an external view of the neck portion of the closured bottle of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a bottle 10 is shown having an aluminium closure 11 applied to its externally screw-threaded neck by the roll-on process. The closure has a top 12 and a depending skirt 13, the lower end portion 14 of which constitutes a security band and is attached to the main portion by a series of circumferentially-spaced frangible bridge portions 1 6 which are designed to break when the main portion is unscrewed. In order to retain the security band 14 on the bottle as the main portion is unscrewed the free lower edge portion of the band is deformed into engagement with a shoulder 1 7 on the bottle, which shoulder faces axially away from the top of the closure.
Additionally, according to the invention, the bottle has an external annular groove 18 disposed axially between the shoulder 1 7 and the location of the bridge portions, and a portion of the band 14 is deformed into this groove.
Initially the closure is in the form of a blank of inverted cup shape having a sealing gasket 1 9 located against the underside of the top 12, and having an interrupted peripheral slit in its skirt to form the bridge portions 1 6 in any known or convenient manner. The closure illustrated aiso has a preformed band of knurling 20 to provide an improved manual grip to facilitate removal of the closure. The closure blank is pressed down on the neck of the bottle and, whilst so held, threadforming rollers roll the upper portions of the skirt into conformity with the screw-thread 21 on the neck of the bottle, and further rollers deform the free edge portion of the band into close engagement with the shoulder 17 and deform an intermediate portion of the band into groove 1 8.
The groove 22 thus formed in the security band increases to a considerable extent the difficulties of successful interference with the security band to enable the closure to be removed without breaking the bridge portions and in a manner enabling the closure to be applied without leaving tell-tale signs of the interference.
Claims
1. A container having an externally screwthreaded neck on which is disposed a closure having a top and a depending skirt, a portion of which skirt is rolled into conformity with the screw-thread on the neck, and said closure having a band which is connected to the screw-threaded portion at its axial edge further from the top of the closure by a number of circumferentially spaced frangible bridges, said band having its free edge portion deformed into engagement with a shoulder which is formed on the container and which faces axially away from the top of the closure, and said band having an intermediate portion thereof axially spaced from said bridges and from said shoulder which portion is deformed into an annular groove on the neck of the container.
2. A container substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
