Abstract
A warning lamp 6, for example a brake warning light of a motorcycle, is illuminated, upon movement of a lever 4, by completion of a circuit containing it and an electrical power source 7 on closure of a switch in the circuit. The switch comprises two terminals 9 and a resiliently deformable member 10 between them, the member 10 being electrically conductive when compressed but electrically insulating when in its relaxed state. The switch may be mounted on the hand gripping part of a motorcycle brake lever 4 so that pressure is applied to the switch when the lever 4 is moved. Alternatively, the switch may be mounted on the lever 4 to abut a stop member so as to be conductive in the non operative position of the lever 4 in this position, the lamp 6 is held off by a transistor in the circuit. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Warning light illumination apparatus
The invention relates to apparatus for illuminating a warning lamp upon movement of a lever. The apparatus is particularly suitable for illuminating a brake warning lamp upon movement of a brake lever on a two-wheeled vehicle.
The invention provides an apparatus for illuminating a warning lamp upon movement of a lever, the apparatus comprising a lamp, an electrical power source, and a switch for connecting the lamp to and disconnecting the lamp from the electrical power source, the switch comprising a resiliently deformable member which in its relaxed state is an electrical insulation but when deformed by pressure is an electrical conductor, pressure being applied to or removed from the switch upon movement of the lever.
The invention is illustrated by the drawings, of which:
Figure 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic plan view of one embodiment of the invention as applied to the illumination of a brake warning lamp on a motorcycle;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the portion of
Figure 1 indicated by the arrow A; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view of a second embodiment of the invention similarly applied but with the switch differently positioned, the view being equivalent to one taken about the line B-B of Figure 1.
With reference to Figure 1, a brake cylinder 2 is attached by a screw 3 to a handlebar 1 of a motorcycle. A brake lever 4 is rotatably supported on the brake cylinder 2 by an attachment member 5 and is urged in the anticlockwise direction as shown in
Figure 1 by a spring (not shown). An end portion 4a of the brake lever 4 contacts the brake cylinder 2, which acts as a stop against the anti-clockwise movement of the brake lever 4 under the urging of the spring. A projection portion 4b of the brake lever 4 acts, when the brake lever 4 is rotated in the clockwise direction, on a piston (not shown) within the brake cylinder 2 to depress and actuate the piston, so that braking oil is forwarded to a brake (not shown) to apply it.
A brake lamp 6, located on a suitable portion of a vehicle body is connected by wires 8 through an electric power source 7 to a pair of terminals 9 (see
Figure 2). Between the terminals 9 there is a resiliently deformable member 10which in its relaxed state is an electrical insulator but which when deformed by pressure is an electrical conductor. The member 10 may be formed from a rubber material having electrically conductive particles incorporated in it.
The terminals 9 and the member 10 are located in a concave portion 4e of the brake lever 4, which concave portion 4serves as a handgripforthe lever 4. A protective cover 11 is superposed on the concave portion 4c over the terminals 9 and the member 10. An electrically insulating member (not shown) separates the terminals 9 and member 10 from tho ronr"p nnrtinn 4c of the brake lever 4. An alternative means of insulating the terminals 9 and member 10 from both the concave portion 4c of the brake lever and the user's hand would be airtight encapsulation of the terminals 9 and member 10 in soft electrically insulating member. The insulation prevents abnormai switching actuation.
It will readily be understood that when the concave portion 4c of the brake lever is gripped by a hand and drawn in the clockwise direction, as shown in Figure 1, towards the handlebar 1, the projection portion 4b of the brake lever 4 actuates the brake as described hereinbefore and the hand pressure compresses the member 10 to complete the electrical circuit to the brake lamp 6 thereby illuminating it.
When the hand pressure is released, the lever 4 is returned to the position shown in Figure 1 by the spring, releasing the brake, and the member 10 relaxes to its electrically insulating state, breaking the circuit to the brake lamp 6, and thereby extinguishing it.
In Figure 3, parts equivalent to parts of the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2 have been given the same reference numerals. The terminals 9 and the member 10 therebetween are located on the end portion 4a of the brake lever 4. This end portion 4a contacts a concave portion 2a of the brake cylinder 2, the concave portion 2a acting as a stop against the anti-clockwise movement of the brake lever 4 under the urging of the spring. When the stop is contacted the member 10 is compressed by a force acting in the direction of the arrow shown in Figure 3 so that it is in an electrically conductive state (ON).
Atransistor switching circuit 12 includes a base B, a collector C, an emitter E, a resistor F and an earth
G. The transistor switching circuit 12 maintains the
OFF state of the brake lamp 6 upon the ON state of the member 10, and gives the ON state of the brake lamp 6 upon the OFF state of the member 10.
Figure 3 shows the non-braking condition, in which the lamp 6 is extinguished. When the brake is to be applied, the brake lever 4 is moved in the direction opposite to that of the arrow and the force on the member 10 is released, thereby illuminating the brake lamp 6 as hereinbefore described.
1. Apparatus for illuminating a warning lamp upon movement of a lever, the apparatus comprising a lamp, an electrical power source, and a switch for connecting the lamp to and disconnecting the lamp from the electrical power source, the switch comprising a resiliently deformable member which in its relaxed state is an electrical insulator but when deformed by pressure is an electrical conductor, pressure being applied to or removed from the switch upon movement of the lever.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which the switch is mounted on a part of the lever adapted to be gripped by hand such that pressure is applied to the switch when the lever is gripped and moved.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which the switch is mounted on the lever to abut a stop member which limits the non-operative position of the lever, thereby being under pressure in the
