Description

SPECIFICATION Disc brake The present invention relates to a disc brake and, particularly to a disc brake of the kind wherein at least one of two opposing friction pads is supported on a pad supporting bolt and is slidable thereon in the direction of the axis of a rotatable disc.
Usually, two parallel pad supporting bolts are provided, and the friction pad comprises an integral backing plate which is formed of a generally flat metal plate and has two bolt receiving bores for passing therethrough pad supporting bolts respectively. However, there are problems that the bolt receiving bores will be worn due to vibrations of a vehicle, thereby increasing the clearance between the bores and the bolts, and that it is necessary to increase the thickness of the backing plate or to provide a pad spring for suppressing vibrations. When the thickness of the backing plate is increased, the weight of the friction pad increases thereby increasing the overall weight of the disc brake and increasing the cost therefor.Further, there is the necessity to increase the spring force of the pad spring which increases the sliding resistance of the friction pad relative to the pad supporting bolt, thereby generating dragging torque in the nonactuated condition and increasing the fuel consumption of the vehicle.
These problems are stressed when the pad supporting bolt acts to receive the braking torque from the friction pad in the actuated condition of the brake.
The aim of the present invention is to solve the problems aforementioned.
According to the present invention there is provided a disc brake comprising two opposing friction pads on the opposite sides of a rotatable disc, therein a bolt receiving bore is provided in a backing plate of at least one friction pad for passing slidably therethrough a pad supporting bolt, and the axial length of said bolt receiving bore is larger than the thickness of the backing plate.
The bolt receiving bore may be formed integrally in the backing plate by the press work, alternatively, the bolt receiving bore may be formed by securing a separate bush on the backing plate.
The present invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a partially omitted front view of one embodiment of a disc brake according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along line Il-Il in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front view of a friction pad; Fig. 4 is a right side view of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along line V-V in Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 5 and showing another embodiment of the invention.
The disc brake shown in Figs. 1 to 5 comprises a bracket 1 adapted to be secured to a non rotatable part of a vehicle, and a caliper 3 slidably supported on two supporting bolts 2 and 2 which are secured to the bracket 1. The caliper 3 includes arm portions 3A engaging respectively with supporting bolts 2, a cylinder portion 3B incorporating slidably therein a piston 4, and a leg portion 3C straddling a portion of the outer circumference of a rotatable disc 5 to extend the side opposite to the piston 4 with respect to the disc 5. Two opposing friction pads 6 and 6' are disposed on the opposite sides of the disc 5 and are supported respectively on pad supporting portions of the supporting bolts 2 and 2.
Respective friction pads 6 and 6' consist of, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, backing plates 7 and linings 8 which are secured to backing plates 7.
Each backing plate 7 is formed of a generally flat metal plate and has bolt receiving bores 9 and 9 for slidably passing therethrough the supporting bolts 2 and 2.
According to the invention, a projecting portion 7A is formed around the circumference of each bolt receiving bore 9 by means of such as press work, so that the axial length of the bore 9 is larger than the thickness of the remaining portion of the backing plate 7.
In actuating the brake, oil under pressure is supplied into an oil chamber defined between the piston 4 and the cylinder portion 3B of the caliper 3. The piston 4 slidably moves leftwards as viewed in Fig. 2 and presses the friction pad 6' against one surface of the disc 5. The reaction force displaces the caliper 3 rightwards with the arm portions 3A thereof being supported on the supporting bolts 2, so that the leg portion 3C presses the friction pad 6 against the disc 5. In the embodiment, the braking torque generating in the friction pads 6 and 6' in actuating the brake is transmitted to the bracket 1 through the supporting bolts 2.
Since projecting portions 7A are provided on backing plates 7 of friction pads 6 and 6' so as to increase the axial length of bolt receiving bores 9 as compared with the thickness of the backing plates 7, it is possible to decrease the surface pressure between the bores 9 and the bolts 2.
Therefore, it is possible to decrease the wear of the bolt receiving bores 9 and the supporting bolts 2 under vibrations of the vehicle. Further, it is not necessary to increase the thickness of the major portion of the backing plate thus decreasing the weight, enabling the spring force of a pad spring to be reduced and reducing the dragging torque in the non-actuated condition.
Fig. 6 shows another embodiment of the invention, wherein a fitting bore 11 is formed in the backing plate 7, and a bush 12 formed of wear resisting material is tightly fitted in the bore 11.
The bolt receiving bore 9 is defined by the inner diameter of the bush 1 2. The axial length of the bush 12 is larger than the thickness of the backing plate 7. When the bush 12 is formed of wear resisting metal, the bush 1 2 is secured to the backing plate 7 by such as caulking, force fitting, welding or the like. When the bush 12 is formed of synthetic resin material such as teflon, the bush 12 is secured by bonding, welding or the like. The embodiment is advantageous over the first embodiment since the material of the bush 12 can be determined as desired.
In the embodiments described, the friction pads 6 and 6' are slidably supported on supporting bolts 2 and 2 and braking torque generating in the friction pads is received directly by the supporting bolts 2 and 2, however, the friction pad 6' may be supported on the bracket 1 with the friction pad 6 being supported cn the supporting bolts 2 and 2.
Further, the invention can also be applicable to disc brakes of the type wherein one or two pad supporting bolts are provided on either of the bracket and the caliper or between the caliper and the bracket, and the bracket or the caliper has pad guiding portion for guiding the sliding movement of the friction pad and receiving braking torque therefrom, and the pad supporting bolt acts to locate or suspend the friction pad.
The disc brake according to the invention has the constitution as heretofore described, thus, the following advantages can be obtained.
a) Since the axial length of the bolt receiving bore is larger than the thickness of the remaining portion of the backing plate, it is possible to reduce the thickness of the backing plate thereby reducing the overall weight of the disc brake and saving the costs therefor.
b) Since the weight of the backing plate can be reduced the spring force of the pad spring can be reduced, further, it is possible to omit the pad spring thus simplifying the construction.
c) It is possible to reduce the sliding resistance between the pad supporting bolt and the friction pad, thus reducing the dragging torque in the nonactuated condition and saving the fuel consumption of the vehicle.
d) It is possible to prevent the deflection or misalignment between the pad supporting bolt and the friction pad thereby assuring smooth sliding movement therebetween.
e) The bolt receiving bore may be provided on a bush which is formed separately from the backing plate and can be formed of a wear resisting material.
f) The surface pressure between the pad supporting bolt and the bolt receiving bore can be reduced, thus reducing the wear in the mutually sliding surfaces and eiongating the service life of the friction pad.
