Description

SPECIFICATION Hub reduction assembly This invention relates to axles having'hub reduction units.
More particularly, the invention is concerned with such an axle in which the hub reduction unit is located outboardly of the centre of the axle from the brake.
The object of the invention is to provide an axle in which the brake may easily be serviced or replaced.
According to the invention we provide an axle having an axle casing and a braked hub reduction assembly at an end of the axle casing and in which epicyclic hub reduction gearing is located outboardly of a multi-plate disc brake, and axle including an outer part of the hub containing the part of the gearing comprising the planet carrier and the annulus gear and which can, without having to disassemble said part of the epicyclic gearing, be withdrawn from and applied to the axle casing to give access to the brake plates for repair or replacement.
The sun gear of the epicyclic gearing will be formed on, or secured to, the axle shaft and by utilising the invention the remaining part of the gearing can be withdrawn from the axle casing thus exposing the brake for service and repair. After the brake has been serviced the outer part of the hub may be re-connected to the axle casing.
The outer hub part may comprise a bellshaped member and a gear housing end plate which are inter-connected and each of which supports a bearing for the planet carrier. In other words, the planet gears are located between the base of the bell-shaped member and the plate.
The bell-shaped member preferably carries the annulus gear which is also engaged by splines on the plate to prevent relative rotation between the plate and the member.
The fixed plates of the brake may be splined to pins having one end received in the diaphragm.
The invention will now be described in detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a section through the end of an axle having hub reduction gearing embodying the invention and Figure 2 is a detailed view of the yoke for operating the hand brake.
Referring now to the drawings, an axle casing is indicated generally at 10 and has an outer part 11 which comprises a bell-shaped member 1 2 and a gear housing end plate 1 3 which are inter-connected by a number of set screws 14.
Mounted within the axle casing is an axle shaft 1 5 which, at its left hand end is formed with a sun gear 1 6. The sun gear meshes with a number of planet gears, one of which is shown at 17, each mounted on a pivot pin 1 8 in a planet carrier indicated generally at 1 9. The planet gears mesh with an annulus gear 20 which is splined within a cylindrical part 21 of the member 12.
At its left hand end, the planet carrier has a spigot 22 which is splined within a flanged hub 23 which carries the inner race of a bearing 24, the outer race of which is carrier by the member 1 2. The planet gears 1 7 mesh with the annulus gear 20 which is located within the cylindrical part 21 of the member 1 2. The annulus gear 20 is prevented from rotating relative to plate 1 3 by splines 32 which engage with the teeth of the annulus gear 20. An oil seal 25 is located between the member 1 2 and the hub. The bearing 24 supports the hub and the outer part of the planet carrier.
The plate 1 3 carries the outer race of a bearing 26 the inner race of which is carried on the inboard part 27 of the planet carrier and is held in position by a nut 28.
The planet carrier supports a hardened button 29 for engagement by the end 30 of the axle shaft and is itself located within the hub by a nut 31.
The plate 1 3 has a spigot 33 which fits within the end of the axle casing 10 and which forms a back-up surface 34 for a multiplate disc brake indicated generally at 35. The brake comprises two plates 36 which are splined at 37 to the axle shaft 1 5 and two annular plates 38 which are splined to three pins, one of which is indicated at 39. The left hand end 40 of each pin is received in a hole in the plate 1 3 and the right hand end of each pin is received in a hole 41 in the end of the axle casing.
Formed within the axle casing is a brake actuating cylinder 42 in which is mounted an actuating piston 43 sealed to the casing at 44 and 45. It will be seen that the piston 43 is of L-shape in cross-section and is annular. Hydraulic fluid can be introduced into the space 46 to move the piston 43 to the left to force the plates 36 and 38 into engagement. Interposed between the front 47 of the cylinder and the right hand plate 38 is a flange 48 of an annular member 49. The annular member has a cylindrical part 50 which fits within the piston 43 and is apertured at 51 to give passage to the axle shaft. An annular recess 52 is formed in the left hand face of the member 49 and through the base of this recess pass a number of guide bolts 53 on which are mounted springs 54 urging the member 49 to the right, i.e. against the front 47 of the piston.
Level with the centre line 55 of the axle shaft the member 49 is provided with two hardened buttons 56 which are engaged by hardened buttons 57 on the arms 58 of a yoke shown in Fig. 2. The yoke is pivoted on a pin 59 received in a bracket 60 having a stem 61 which is a drive fit in the hole in the axle casing. The yoke has an arm 62 which extends through an aperture 63 in the axle casing and a boot 64 is connected to the axle casing and the arm 62. In its upper end the arm 62 has a hole 65 for connection to a hand brake linkage.
Dealing first with operation of the brake, as has been described above, during normal service operation hydraulic fluid will be introduced into the space 46 which will move the piston 43 to the left and this will move the member 49 to the left and the flange 48 will move to trap the plates 36 and 38 between the flange and the surface 34 on the plate 1 3. It will be clear that the member 49 is free to move to the left so that the buttons 56 and 57 come out of engagement and the motion to the left is against the action of the springs 54. To apply the hand brake, the yoke is pivoted in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1 by the hand brake linkage connected to the hole 65. The member 49 is moved to the left via the arms 58 of the yoke and slides within the piston 43 to apply the brake. The member 49 thus acts as a lost motion device relative to the piston 43.
The outer hub part 11 and the plate 1 3 which are connected together by the set screws 14 form an assembly which is bolted to the end of the axle casing by bolts 66. If these bolts are removed, the outer member 11, the plate 1 3 together with the planet carrier 1 9 and the planet gears and the hub 23 can all be removed as an assembly to expose the plates 36 and 38 of the multiplate brake. The brake may thus be serviced or the plates replaced and then the assembly of the outer hub member with the planet carrier, annulus gear and plate 1 3 may again be mounted on the axle shaft without there being any need to disturb the bearings 24 and 26. This makes maintenance of the brake extremely easy.
