Description
SPECIFICATION
A sealing and guiding device for a braking power amplifier
This invention relates to a sealing and guiding device for a braking power amplifier, more particularly to a device for sealing the vacuum chamber of a vacuum-operable power-assist unit of a hydraulic-pneumatic amplifier and for guiding an axially displaceable cylinder extending from the chamber axially outwardly.
Such a device is known from, for example,
Fig. 1 of German Patent No. 23 37 323. The device shown in this Figure is in the hub of an amplifier-casing end cover through which the cylinder passes. The device is biased radially inwardly by the cover towards the cylinder and, in addition, is held in position by axial stop elements, for example toothed rings.
To bias the known sealing and guiding devices radially inwardlydisregarding the stop elements---calls for the devices and the hubs of the end covers to be manufactured to close tolerances, and thus extended production times, in order to ensure optimum securement, sealing tightness and guiding function.
It is an aim of the invention, therefore, to improve a sealing and guiding device for a braking power amplifier in such a way as to simplify its construction yet to permit wider tolerances for the hub and for the sealing device itself, to render secure attachment possible and to ensure a reliable and well functioning seal and guiding function.
Accordingly, the invention, from its widest aspect, is directed to a vacuum chamber sealing and cylinder guiding device for a braking power amplifier, the device being a stepped diameter sleeve provided at one end with foldable lobes for fastening it to the amplifier casing and being lined with an elastic material.
From a somewhat narrower aspect, the invention is directed to a device for sealing the vacuum chamber of a vacuum-operable power-assist unit of a hydraulic-pneumatic braking power amplifier and for guiding an axially displaceable cylinder extending axially outwardly from the chamber, the device being a stepped diameter sleeve mountable at the amplifier-casing end through which the cylinder extends, being provided at the free end of its reduced diameter portion with foldable lobes serving to fasten it to said casing end, and being lined with an elastic material.
The lobes of a device according to the invention exert, when during assembly of the device with the amplifier they are folded, a very high pulling, or tightening, force, thus rendering it possible for the device not only to be securely attached to the amplifier casing but also to be concentrically located in a bore of the casing, and this notwithstanding considerably wider manufacturing tolerances than hitherto feasible.
In order to make'the invention and ssme of its subsidiary features more readily understood, one embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a sealing and guiding device according to the invention mounted in a hydraulic-pneumatic braking power amplifier; and
Figure 2 is a front view, partly in crosssection, of a part of a lined stepped diameter sleeve of the device in its unmounted state.
A hydraulic-pneumatic braking power amplifier only partly shown in Fig. 1 is denoted by the reference numeral 1. The amplifier is surrounded by a casing 2 enclosing adjacent to the end illustrated the vacuum chamber 2a of a vacuum-operable power-assist unit and having an inwardly directed flange 3 to which a sealing and guiding device according to the invention is fastened. An axially displaceable cylinder 1 a extends from the vacuum chamber 2a through the bore defined by the flange 3 axially outwardly, its displacement taking place when the foot brake of the motor vehicle, in which the amplifier is installed, is applied and released respectively. As may be seen from Fig. 1, there is a gap between the cylinder and the flange. To seal this gap, and thus the vacuum chamber, and to guide the cylinder is the function of the sealing and guiding device which comprises a stepped diameter sleeve 5, preferably made of sheet metal. In order to fasten the sleeve 5 to the flange 3, it is provided at the free end of its reduced diameter portion with foldable lobes 6 which after assembly back-grip the flange 3. The sleeve 5 is lined with an elastic material 4, for example rubber, and is provided with a radially outwardly extending flange 7 serving to hold a protecting cap 8. The lining 4 extends beyond the sleeve's end remote from the lobes 6, and both the lining and the sleeve are formed with axially spaced continuous projections 9 extending radially inwardly from their respective internal surfaces. The projections of the lining 4 disposed in its extension serve substantially as sealing lips and its remaining ones as cylinder-guiding lips. The projections of the sleeve, which may be seen more clearly in Fig. 2, serve substantially for securely anchoring the lining 4 to the sleeve 5.
At least one of the sealing lips 9 is biased radially inwardly by a circumferentially extending continuous spring ring 10 made of helically wound wire.
In addition to being lined, the external circumferential surface of the sleeve is preferably clad, at last partly, with an elastic material which may again be rubber. In any case, and as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the external face of the step extending radially between the sleeve's reduced diameter portion and its other portion is clad with an elastic material 1 2. It is also advantageous if the small part of the reduced diameter portion between said step and the lobes 6 including the latter are clad by an elastic material. If this is done, the elastic material covering the lobes will stretch and be deformed when during assembly the lobes are folded. An additional advantage of thus covering the lobes with an elastic material is that they, and the flange 3, may be manufactured with wide tolerances which are compensated by the presence of the elastic material. Finally, the free surface of the cladding 1 2 that faces the casing 2 is provided with coaxially disposed axially outwardly extending projections 11 which also form sealing lips.
For assembling the sealing and guiding device with the amplifier the reduced diameter portion thereof provided with the lobes 6 is inserted into the bore of the flange 3 until the projections 11 of the cladding 1 2 on the external face of the step abut on the flange 3 of the casing 2. Thereafter, the lobes 6 are folded by 90 so that they back-grip the flange 3. As a result, the axial projections 11 are compressed and lightly pressed against the flange 3. The sealing and guiding device can thus be attached securely to the casing 2without having to work to close manufacturing tolerances-and its concentric positioning will be achieved without any difficulty.
