The valve slide member 11 has a sleeve 14 extending through the cylinder head around the device 4 and terminating at the top in a flange 18 from which radial arms 19 extend outwards to a toothed drive ring 20, the arms extending through respective apertures 30 extending over the range of oscillatory movement of the arms formed in an intermediate ring 29 through which the device 4 is mounted in the cylinder head. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Arrangement for scavenging and charging the cylinders of a two-stroke internal combustion engine The invention relates to an arrangement for scavenging and charging a cylinder of a twostroke internal combustion engine with air or a fuel-air mixture, the cylinder head having inlet ports which extend substantially parallel to the cylinder axis and are closable by means of a valve slide member which performs a controlled intermittent oscillation and is disposed on a cylinder head surface which is in the combustion chamber, the inlet and corresponding apertures in the axial slide being arranged in a pattern around a device fitted at the centre of the cylinder head and serving for fuel supply or ignition, such element having a sleeve around it.
Optimum scavenging and filling of the cylinders of a two-stroke internal combustion engine with air or a fuel-air mixture is of course achieved theoretically when a maximum quantity of scavenging air, in the form of an "air piston" which is complete as far as possible over the cylinder cross-section, enters the cylinder and expels the combusion gases therein by displacement. For this to occur, the total opening cross-section of all the inlet ports must provide a maximum net passage area - i.e., the product of the geometric passage area and the flow coefficients -- and the displacing "air piston" must remain substantially complete.
An arrangement of the kind hereinbefore described has been suggested in German Offenlegungsschrift 2 907 733 to provide a substantially undisturbed air piston.
In the earlier arrangement the intermittently oscillating valve slide member is moved by means of drive or actuating pins extending through the inlet ports or through additional bores communicating therewith. The pins, of which there must be at least three to ensure satisfactory movement of the valve slide, are connected by way of spring strip arms to an adjusting or actuating sleeve which extends around the device at the centre of the cylinder head. This construction is elaborate; also, it is disadvantageous in that the additional bores through which the pins extend when the valve member is open and closed take up additional space in the cylinder head surface and, with the valve member closed, there must be minimum cover between them and the valve member. The additional bores therefore hamper maximum use of the cylinder head for maximum total open cross-section of the inlet ports.
It is the object of the invention to simplify the drive construction for the valve slide member and to reduce very considerably the space required for the valve slide drive in the cylinder head.
Accordingly the present invention provides an arrangement for scavenging and charging a cylinder of a two-stroke internal combustion engine with air or a fuel-air mixture, the cylinder head having inlet ports which extend substantially parallel to the cylinder axis and are closable by means of a valve slide member which is arranged to perform a controlled intermittent oscillation and is disposed on a cylinder head surface in the combustion chamber, the inlet ports and corresponding apertures in the valve slide being arranged in a pattern around a device fitted at the centre of the cylinder head and serving for fuel supply or ignition, in which the valve slide member is connected to a sleeve extending through the cylinder head around said device and terminating at the top in a flange from which at least one arm extends radially outwards to a drive means for the valve member, the or each arm extending through respective aperture extending over the range of oscillatory movement of the arm formed in an intermediate ring through which said device is mounted in the cylinder head.
The apertures in the intermediate ring in the zone of the radial arms make it possible to have a central drive and yet to provide support for the fuel injector or ignition device at the centre of the cylinder head. Drives for rotating, but not for oscillating valve slide members known from German Offenlegungsschrift 1 911 617 and German Patent Specification 7 29 576, extend through the centre of the cylinder head; but this construction cannot be used for the present arrangement because of the device at the centre of the cylinder head.
Conveniently, to facilitate engagement of the slide valve member with the cylinder head surface, a spring device is interposed between the flange and the cylinder head; also, the device at the cnetre of the cylinder head can, with advantage, be sealed to the valve slide or the sleeve connected thereto by means of a seal ring received, e.g. in an annular groove in the device.
In order to promote a fuller understanding of the above and other aspects of the invention, an embodiment will now be described, by ways of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the left half of a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine on the section line I-I of Figure 2, and Figure 2 is a section on the line Il-Il of Figure 1.
A combustion chamber 1 of a cylinder 2 of a diesel engine which not shown in any greater detail, is closed at the top by a cylinder head 3 having at its centre a fuel injection or ignition device 4. The cylinder 1 receives a piston 6.
The cylinder head 3 has inlet ports 7 for the supply of air in the case of diesel engines and a fuel-air mixture in the case of Otto cable engines.
The ports 7 are arranged in three circular rows 9, 9a, 10 concentric with the cylinder axis and are in the form of longitudinal bores in the cylinder head 3. The ports in the rows 9, 9a and 10 have different diameters. The cylinder 1 communicates by way of the ports 9, 9a, 10 with an air chamber 8 indicated in diagrammatic form. A controlled opening and closing of the ports 7 is provided by a valve slide member 11 in which orifices 1 2 corresponding in arrangement, shape and size to the bores 7 are provided.
The valve slide member 11 is received in an annular recess 13 in the outer wall of cylinder 2; and is located and driven by a sleeve 14 which is preferably integral with the slide member 11, extending around the injection nozzle device 4 coaxially through the top of the cylinder head 3.
A piston ring 1 5 seals the sleeve 1 4 internally in relation to the nozzle 4, and the outer diameter of the sleeve is mounted for rotation in two radial bearings 1 7 spaced apart by a spacer 16 and supported on a shoulder of the cylinder head 3.
At the top end the sleeve 1 4 is provided with a flange which, to facilitate assembly is coupled to the sleeve 14 releasably by way of serrations 21, and is retained on the sleeve 14 by bolts 22. As can be seen in Figure 2, three arms 1 9 which extend radially outwards connect flange 1 8 to a toothed ring 20 which meshes with a gear 24 on a drive shaft 23.
An axial bearing 25 for the unit comprising the elements 19, 20, 14, 11 is disposed at the top end of cylinder head 3 beneath the flange 18 and bears by way of a group of springs 26 on a shoulder 27 in the inner edge of cylinder head 3.
The injection nozzle or ignition 4 is mounted in the cylinder head 3 by way of an intermediate ring 29 which is retained on. head 3 together with nozzle 4 by bolts 28. The invention, ring 29 has apertures 30 whose opening angle spans at least the pivoting region of a respective one of the radially outwardly extending arms 1 9. The apertures 30 enable the device 4 at the centre of cylinder head 3 to be supported without such support hampering the oscillatory opening and closing movement of the valve slide member 11, such movement being transmitted thereto centrally from the drive shaft 23 via the toothed ring 20, arms 19, flange 18 and sleeve 14. Of course, a more simple system than the toothed ring 20 and three arms 19 can be used; for instance, just a single arm 19 can be used to transmit the pivoting motion from the drive 23 to the central system which comprises the flange 1 8 and sleeve 14.
