Abstract
An insert for a sandwich panel 12 has a body 19 and a sleeve 23, each of which has an axial counterbore 25, 26 at one end thereof. The walls of counterbore 25 of the body 19 collapse into the counterbore 26 of the sleeve 23 when they bear against the inner face of sleeve 16 upon installation of the insert, to mechanically lock the body and sleeve together, while portion 22 of the sleeve is expanded outwardly by the tapered portion 20 of body 19 to bear against the inner face of skin 14, head portion 20' bearing against the outer face. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Sandwich Panel Insert
The invention relates to an insert for a sandwich panel, and more particularly to an insert that can be mechanically connected to one skin of a sandwich panel upon installation.
Inserts of this type are commonly used in panels of the kind having core material sandwiched between a pair of skins. The core material is typically structural foam, hexagonallyshaped cells, balsa wood or other light-weight material. It is highly desirable that the inserts used with such panels be easily installed, without the use of special tools, in a one-step operation, and without the necessity of time-consuming processes such as potting.
A known insert has a generally cylindrical body one end of which tapers radially from that end.
The body typically has a central, longitudinal, threaded bore which is engageable with a threaded fastener. The body is frictionally held within a generally cylindrical sleeve. When installed, the outer skin of a sandwich panel is mechanically locked, between the body and the sleeve, to provide a tapped hole in the sandwich panel. The locking, coupled with the frictional engagement between the body and the sleeve, can adequately withstand pushout loads exerted against the fastener only by closely controlling dimensional tolerances, plating, hardness and malleability of the sleeve and the body. However, experience has shown that, even when such quality control is maintained, the insert often fails, apparently due to the wide variation in pushout loads encountered.
The present invention provides an insert for a sandwich panel of the type having soft core material sandwiched between upper and lower skins, the insert comprising a sleeve having upper and lower portions and a body having upper and lower portions, the lower sleeve portion being engageable with the lower skin of the sandwich panel upon installation of the insert and being provided with an axial counterbore extending inwardly from the lower edge of the lower sleeve portion, the upper body portion being tapered radially inwardly from the upper edge of the upper body portion, and the lower body portion being provided with an axial counterbore extending inwardly from the lower edge of the lower body portion, the insert being such that the counterbore in the lower body portion is collapsible into the counterbore in the lower sleeve portion whereby the body is mechanically locked to the sleeve upon installation of the insert.
Throughout this specification, the terms "upper" and "lower", when used to define the relative positions of the body and sleeve of the insert and the position of the sandwich panel, relate to a frame of reference in which the sandwich panel is horizontal, and the insert is introduced from above.
Advantageously, the sleeve and the body are generally cylindrical.
Preferably, the upper and lower portions of the sleeve are separated by a recessed portion circumferentially extending around the sleeve.
The body may have a tapped hole extending axially into its upper portion for engagement with a threaded fastener. Preferably, the tapped hole extends right through the body.
An insert for a sandwich panel, and constructed in accordance with the invention, will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view of a sandwich panel and the insert;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the insert of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the bottom portion of the insert;
Figure 4 is an enlarged view of the bottom portion of the insert after installation; and
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of the insert installed in a sandwich panel.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows an insert 10 positioned in a sandwich panel 12. The panel 12 has an upper skin 14, a lower skin 16, and a core material 1 7 sandwiched between the two skins. The insert 10 comprises a sleeve 1 8 and a body 1 9. The sleeve 18 has upper and
lower portions 22 and 23 respectively, a recessed portion 21 in the outer periphery of the sleeve separating said portions. The body 1 9 has an upper, tapered portion 20 that engages the upper portion 22 of the sleeve 1 8 to connect the insert
10 mechanically to the sandwich panel 12 as
hereinafter described. The upper end 20' of the
body 1 9 defines an inclined shoulder which
merges with the widest part of the tapered
portion 20.The outer configuration of the insert
10 is the same as that of known inserts.
As shown in Figures 2 to 5, the body 19 of the insert 10 has a central, axial tapped hole 24 which is threadably engageable with a fastener (not shown). The hole 24 may axially extend only part way into the body 19, or totally therethrough.
The interior of the lower portion 23 of the sleeve 1 8 is provided with a counterbore 26, while the base portion of the body 19 also has a counterbore 25.
Upon installation, a force I is applied to the insert 10 (see Figures 3 and 4i. The counterbore 25 in the body 19 "bottoms" against the lower skin 1 6 of the sandwich panel 12; and, as this force I is exerted, the counterbore 25 collapses into the counterbore 26 to lock the body 1 9 mechanically to the sleeve 18.
At the same time, the upper skin 14 of the sandwich panel 12 is sandwiched between the upper end 20' of the body 19 and the upper portion 22 of the sleeve 1 8 (which has been flared radially outward by contact with the tapered portion 20 of the body 1 9). Bending of the sleeve 1 8 is restricted to the upper portion 22 by appropriate positioning of the recessed portion 21.
Once installed, the insert 10 is able to withstand greater pushout forces P than known inserts. The mechanical locking between the body 1 9 and the sleeve 18 of the insert 10 (which results from collapsing the counterbore 25 into the space provided by the counterbore 26) ensures that the insert will not be pushed out of the sandwich panel 12 until the force P is large enough to separate the insert from the upper skin 14 of the sandwich panel.
