Abstract

A mounting plate (18) for a motor vehicle filter of the type having two outlets delivering respectively coarsely filtered oil for the engine bearings and finely filtered oil for the sump, enables such a filter to be connected to an engine block designed for a filter having only one outlet. The plate (18) has a central outlet sleeve with a pair of threaded nipples (22, 24) for connection to the engine block (10) and the filter (34), an annular sealing gasket (26) for sealingly connecting the plate to a projection (28) on the engine block, oblique inlet channels (30, 32) extending through said plate (18) from a position inwardly of said sealing gasket (26) on one side to a position adjacent the inlet openings of the filter (34) on the other side, and a radial outlet channel (36) extending through said plate (18) from a position adjacent an auxiliary outlet in the coverof the filter (34) to a threaded hole (38) on the periphery of the plate (18) for connection by means of a flexible pipe to an oil tank or sump of the engine. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Multiple filter connector for motor vehicle filters This invention relates to a multiple filter connector for motor vehicle filters of the type to be screwed on and having two flow channels, particularly as described in Italian Patent Application No. 67036 A180 filed January11, 1980 in the name of the present Applicants and entitled "Filtro per lubrificanti di motor a combustione interna, particolarmente per autoveicoli" (lubricant filter for internal combustion engines, particularly for motor vehicles).
In this prior patent application, a filter is described which permits to carry out simultaneously a rough overall filtration and a finer partial filtration of the lubricant while maintaining a relatively economical filter structure of the type to be screwed on. This filter comprises a cover with an axial outlet opening provided with a screw connector for connection to the engine block, a lubricant inlet opening spaced a predetermined distance from the axis of the filter and an auxiliary lubricant outlet opening arranged in an intermediate position from the axis, with an annular sealing gasket arranged on the cover outwardly of the inlet opening and a second annular sealing gasket located on the cover between the inlet opening and the auxiliary outlet opening. For a description of the inner structure of the filter, reference may be had to the aforementioned prior patent application. The inner structure of the filter is such as to divide the flow of lubricant into two flow channels, one for overall rough filtering and the otherforfiner partial filtering.
With this filter it is necessary to change the connection channels as usually provided in the engine block because there must be an auxiliary outlet connection forthefiltered oil afterfinefiltering and conduct it preferably directly into the oil tank. Therefore, this filter cannot be used on motor vehicle engines of the existing conventional type.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a multiple filter connector adapted to be applied to an engine block of a conventional motor vehicle so that the above-described filter can also be used by owners of conventional motor vehicles.
To achieve this object, and other objects and advantages which will become apparent in the course of the following description, the invention provides a multiple filter connector for motor vehicle filters of the type to be screwed on and having two flow channels, as described in the aforementioned Italian Patent Application No. 67036-A/80, comprising a disk-shaped plate having a central seat for sealingly receiving a sleeve with threaded pipe nipples for connection to the engine block on one side of said plate, and to the filter on the other, an annular sealing gasket embedded in said one side of said plate coaxially of said sleeve, oblique channels extending from predetermined positions on said one side of said plate to predetermined positions on said other side of said plate, and a radial channel in said plate for connecting a predetermined point on said other side of said plate to a threaded hole on the periphery of said plate.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is an axial section through a multiple filter connector according to the invention as mounted on an engine block and provided with a filter shown partially broken away, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the multiple filter connector shown separately in a transverse section taken along the line Il-Il of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. 1, part of an engine block of a motor vehicle is schematically shown and indicated by 10.
This engine block is of conventional construction and thus has a threaded outlet opening 12 for conducting the filter oil to a transverse channel 14 leading to the parts of the engine to be lubricated such as the crankshaft bearings and the like. An eccentric inlet opening 16 in the engine block 10 receives the oil from the oil pump (not shown) for conducting it into the filter.
The multiple filter connector according to the invention comprises a disk-shaped plate 18 of metal or some other suitable material. This plate 18 has a central passage 20 for receiving a first threaded pipe nipple 22 for connection to the filter on one side of the plate 18 and a second threaded pipe nipple 24 for connection to the engine block on the other side of the plate 18. Embedded in the side of the plate 18 facing the engine block is an annular sealing gasket 26 for sealing connection of the plate 18 to an annular projection 28 normally provided on the engine block concentrically of the outlet opening 12.Two or more oblique channels 30,32 extend from the side of the plate 18 adjacent the engine block inwardly of the annular sealing gasket 26 to the opposite side of the plate 18 where they open in a position corresponding to the inlet openings of the lubricant into the filter 34.
An auxiliary radial channel 36 is provided in the plate 18 and extends from a position adjacent the central passage 20 at an auxiliary outlet opening in the cover of the filter 34 to a threaded hole 38 for connection by means of a flexible pipe to the lubricating oil tank of the engine.
As shown in Fig. 1, the central passage 20 is located in a sleeve 40 secured to an appropriate seat in the plate 18. However, obviously the plate 18 and the connecting member40 may also be made integrally.
Although in Fig. 1 the oblique channel 32 and the radial auxiliary channel 36 are shown on the same plane for convenience of illustration, they are obviously located on different radial planes, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will thus be evident that the described multiple filter connector can be screwed to a conventional engine block and by connecting the threaded hole 38 by means of a flexible pipe to the lubricant tank or oil sump of the engine the filter as described in the aforementioned prior application can be used on vehicles of the older type which are constructed for the application of conventional filter having only one flow channel.
