Abstract

A movable baking rack has a base 10 of sheet metal with four upwardly projecting pegs 26, (one at each corner); posts 12 support tray runners and fit snugly on respective pegs; and a top plate surmounts the posts. The rack is easily disassembled and can be inexpensively manufactured. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Movable rack for carrying baking tr - This invention relates to a movable rack for carry ing baking trays.
In the past, such racks have been constructed of steel members, often tubular, welded together, to form a rack built up on a square or rectangular base having four upstanding corner posts, two posts at each side being joined by front to rear runners which are usually constituted by L-shaped angle members.
The baking trays are then slid in and out on these runners.
It would be desirable if a movable rack could be constructed which could be disassembled for easy transport and storage.
According to the invention, there is provided a movable baking rack comprising a rectangular or square base made wholly of sheet metal and having four upwardly projecting pegs one at each corner, the rack having posts which are tubular and are dimensioned to receive the pegs in their bottom end, and a plain flat top plate which is secured for example by bolting to the tops of the posts.
The rack may if desired carry castor wheels or rollers. These are to facilitate movement of the rack and are attached to the base at its corners.
In a preferred version of the invention, the base of sheet metal has a central window or space therein, defined by downwardly-turned flanges, and the base may be constructed by taking a plain rectangular sheet of metal, making cuts at the corners, bending down the four marginal edges, cutting a central win dow therein and bending down the marginal flanges thereof to define a central rectangular window. All these operations may be carried out by a single pressing and stamping operation which leads to economy in manufacture. The central window enables a good flow of hot air to pass centrally upwardly and so affect the products being baked on the baking trays.
The posts of the rack support L-shaped angle members which serve as runners upon which trays can be slid in and out.
The invention also relates to a base constructed as set out above and intended for use as part of a movable baking rack.
The invention will be better understood from the following description given with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which Figure 1 is an isometric view of one example of rack according to the invention and Figure 2 is an isometric view of its base.
The rack illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 includes a base 10, four upstanding posts 12, a series of runners 14 carried by the posts, and atop plate 16. Castors 18 are attached to the underside of the base 10.
A diagonal bracing bar may be included across the rear side of the rack.
The base 10 is made from a single sheet of metal in one pressing-stamping operation. In this operation a central rectangular or square window 2G ,s cut out and the four marginal flanges are turned down through approximately 90 degrees as shown at 22.
Tools with hooked ends may be used to pull the racks out of a baking oven. A loop bracket may be attached to the base ofthe rack for this purpose.
An upstanding peg 26 is welded or otherwise attached to the base 10 at or near each corner. Each post 12 is tubular and is a snug fit on the respective peg. A clip or bolt may be used to fix each post securelyto its associated peg.
Alternatively, such a rack base can be made from a single piece of steel sheet by a numericallycontrolled machine effecting a series of punching and notching operations.
1. A movable baking rack comprising a rectangular or square base made wholly of sheet metal and having four upwardly projecting pegs one at each corner, the rack having posts which are tubular and dimensioned to receive the pegs in their bottom end, and a plain flat top plate which is secured for example by bolting to the tops of the posts.
2. A rack according to claim 1 in which the base has castors or rollers attached thereto.
3. A rack according to Claim 1 or 2 in which the base is made by a single pressing and stamping operation.
4. A rack according to Claim 1,2 or 3 in which the base has a central rectangular or square window formed therein, said window being bounded by downwardly-turned flanges.
5. A baking rack substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
