Abstract
In a hand tool e.g: garden shears of the type in which two co-operating members eg: blades are movable about a common pivot axis by handles connected to the members via tangs (15), each tang (15) has two projections (17, 18) thereon which engage in apertures in the associated member, the apertures being located on opposite sides of the pivot axis. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Hand tools
This invention relates to hand tools of the kind comprising two co-operating members which can be moved relatively to one another to effect a desired operation by handles connected to the respective co-operating members.
According to the present invention there is provided a hand tool of the kind comprising two cooperating members and handles connected through tangs to the respective members for moving said members relatively to one another about a common pivot axis, wherein at least one said member has an aperture therein spaced from said axis and said tang has a projection which engages in said aperture.
The present invention also provides a hand tool comprising a pair of blades, a pair of tangs each supporting a hand grip and a pivot bolt extending through registering apertures in the tangs and the blades, each tang having two projections located on opposite sides of the pivot bolt aperture of the tang and each blade having apertures with which the projections can registerto locate the blade relatively to the tang, the pivot bolt extending through the superimposed pivot bolt apertures and, together with a nut threaded on said bolt, forming means by which the blades and tangs are secured together.
Whilst the invention will be described in its application to garden shears of the kind used for cutting shrubs and grass, it is also applicable to other hand tools of the kind referred to, examples of which are pruners, loppers, wire cutters, etc.
The invention will be better understood from a consideration of the following description of one construction of garden shear in accordance with the present invention which will be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

In particularthe invention is concerned with the method of fixing the blades to their respective handle tangs. With the present construction of garden shears this is achieved by providing two apertures in the blade which key with two projections on the associated handle tang.
Referring now to the drawings, Figs. 1 to 5 show a shear blade 10 with a bevelled shear edge 11 and a hole 12 for receiving a pivot bolt, not shown, by which the two co-operating members are pivotally connected. Apertures 13, 14 are formed on either side of the pivot bolt holes.
Referring next to Figs. 6 to 8, it will be seen that the tang 15 has a corresponding pivot bolt hole 16 and projections 17, 18 on either side of the pivot bolt hole 16. The projections 17, 18 are located, shaped and dimensioned to key into blade apertures 13, 14 respectively. The tang 15 has a handle receiving portion 19 over which a handle, not shown, is fitted or moulded.
The companion shear blade and tang (not shown) are mirror images of those described above, to provide handles which are spaced from one another in conventional manner.
In assembling shears, the blade 10 and tang 15 are joined by passing projections 17, 18 into apertures 13, 14 and a corresponding pair of blade/tang assemblies are secured by the pivot bolt, which is the only fixing member required. Preferably, the blades are fine blanked and the tangs are diecast which results in a satisfactory assembly.
A mouth of each apertures 13, 14 may be recessed over a part of its periphery as shown at 13a and 14a, and after assembly of a tang 15 and blade 10, the head of each projection 17, 18 may be deformed to extend over the ledge formed by the recess to secure the blade 10 and tang 15 together as a sub-assembly priorto securing two appropriate sub-assemblies by a pivot bolt. The recess could go completely around the periphery of each aperture.
The shapes of the apertures 13, 14 illustrated are not significant; they have been determined by the cross-sectional area requirements, and minimum spacing requirements between the holes for fine blanking.
Although the provision of two projections located on opposite sides of the pivot bolt hole is to be preferred, a single projection may prove to be satisfactory.
The invention enables hand tools to be assembled from a range of differently shaped or dimensioned components by merely fitting together by hand the blades or equivalent members, and the tangs, and securing them together by means of a nut and bolt assembly. Moreover, the replacement of a worn or damaged component of the hand tool is easily achieved.

A hand tool of the kind comprising two cooperating members, two handles and tangs connecting said handles to the respective members for moving said members relatively to one another about a common pivot axis, wherein at least one said member has an aperture therein spaced from said axis and the tang connected to said member has a projection which engages in said aperture.
2. A hand tool according to claim 1 wherein said one member has a second aperture therein spaced from said axis and located on the opposite side of a plane, containing said axis, from the first aperture, forthe reception of a second projection on said tang.
3. A hand tool according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said projection or each projection is formed in one piece with said tang.
4. A hand tool according to any preceding claim, wherein the or each projection has an end surface which lies substantially flush with a surface of the corresponding member.

Claims (10)
1. A hand tool of the kind comprising two cooperating members, two handles and tangs connecting said handles to the respective members for moving said members relatively to one another about a common pivot axis, wherein at least one said member has an aperture therein spaced from said axis and the tang connected to said member has a projection which engages in said aperture.
2. A hand tool according to claim 1 wherein said one member has a second aperture therein spaced from said axis and located on the opposite side of a plane, containing said axis, from the first aperture, forthe reception of a second projection on said tang.
3. A hand tool according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said projection or each projection is formed in one piece with said tang.
4. A hand tool according to any preceding claim, wherein the or each projection has an end surface which lies substantially flush with a surface of the corresponding member.
5. A hand tool according to any preceding claim wherein the or each projection has been deformed to prevent withdrawal of the projection from the member.
6. A hand tool according to any preceding claim wherein said tang is a die-casting.
7. A hand tool according to any preceding claim wherein said members are the blades of a garden shear or pruner.
8. A hand tool comprising a pair of blades, a pair of tangs each supporting a hand grip and a pivot bolt extending through registering holes in the tangs and the blades, each tang having two projections located on opposite sides of the pivot bolt hole of the tang and each blade having apertures with which the projections can registerto locate the blade relatively to the tang, the pivot bolt thereon extending through the superimposed pivot bolt holes and, together with a nut threaded on said bolt, forming means by which the blades and tangs are secured togeTher
9. Ahandtool according to claim 8,whereinthe bolt and nut form the sole means for holding the blades and tangs together.
10. A hand tool substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
