Abstract

A base fitting for pieces of furniture e.g., cupboards and cabinets, comprises a fastening member 1 to which a supporting member 4 is pivoted on an offset axis 2, member 4 being height adjustable by a threaded spindle 6. Pins on member 4 locate in apertures in member 1 to lock member 4 in its supporting position. When member 4 is pivoted to lie against panel 10 during transport, a slide 3 thereon rests on the ground. Member 4 has detachable clamps 7 for a cover sheet 14. Panel 10 has a cap (17) covered access bore 15 to the spindle screw drive slot. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Base-support for a piece of furniture This invention relates to a fitting for bases of pieces of furniture comprising a supporting member and an adjusting member mounted in said supporting member by means of an adjusting spindle.

Base fittings of this kind, which are mounted to the lower panel of cupboards or the like, make it possible to compensate uneven areas in the floor, when the piece of furniture has already been put up.

Such fittings are of advantage, when putting up single pieces of furniture. They are, however, of particular importance, in built-in kitchen furniture.

It is, the object of the invention to provide a base fitting of the above-described kind by means of which the transport volume of the piece of furniture can be substantially reduced for transports within the furniture factory and from the furniture dealer two the customer.

According to the invention, this is achieved by said supporting member being pivotable about a horizontal axle, whereby it is linked to a fastening member adapted to be fixed to the piece of furniture.

It is a further object of the invention to design a base fitting of this kind in such a manner that the piece of furniture is fully transportable within the furniture factory, i.e. that it can be moved on the floor without being damaged, also when the supporting member is in pivoted position.

According to the invention this is achieved by providing the supporting member with a lateral sliding member resting on the floor on which the piece of furniture stands, when the supporting member is in pivoted position.

A preferred embodiment of the invention provides that the pivoting axle of the supporting member is positioned beside the vertical center plane I-I of the supporting member, said center plane being parallel to said pivoting axle.

In this way, an automatic support of the supporting member being in the functional position, i.e. in the vertical position, is obtained as the weight of the piece of furniture presses eccentrically on the supporting member. The supporting member is, thus, prevented from being tilted unintentionally.

A preferred embodiment of the invention provides that the supporting member is retained between two lateral flanges of the fastening member and that the supporting member is provided with one or more lateral pins which extend into a corresponding aperture in the adjacent lateral flange, when the supporting member is in the supporting position.

In this way, the supporting member is additionally retained in a simple manner. It is retained in its functional position even when the piece of furniture is lifted or tilted.

In the following an embodiment of the invention will be described in greater detail with reference to the Figures of the drawing without being limited to the embodiment specifically described.

Figure 1 shows a side view of a base fitting according to the invention, Figure 2 shows the same side view turned by 90 , Figure 3 shows the same side view as Figure 1, the supporting member being in pivoted position, and Figure 4 shows a top view of the base fitting according to the invention.

The base fitting according to the invention comprises three main members, the fastening member 1, which is fastened directly to the lower panel 10 of the piece of furniture by means of screws and the like, the supporting member 4 and the adjusting member 8.

The adjusting member 8 is adjustably retained on the supporting member 4 by means of a spindle 6 mounted in a female thread of a retaining tube 5.

By turning the spindle 6, the height of the base fitting is adjusted.

The supporting member 4 is pivotally arranged on the fastening member 1, i.e. it is mounted on the fastening member 1 by means of a pivoting axis 2, which is a tubular rivet in this embodiment.

Due to the fact that the supporting member 4 is pivotally mounted, it can either be moved into the supporting position illustrated in Figure 1 and 2 or into the position illustrated in Figure 3 in which the supporting member rests directly on the lower panel 10 of the piece of furniture.

In this position of the supporting member 4, the external volume of the piece of furniture is substantially reduced, which will be of particular importance during transport.

As can be seen in Figure 1, the pivoting axle 2 is positioned outside of the vertical center plane I-I of the supporting member 4. Hence, the supporting member 4 is automatically retained, when it is in pivoted position, i.e. in the supporting position, and when the piece of furniture rests thereon.

The fastening member 1 has two lateral flanges 11, an aperture 12 being provided in each of said flanges. Pins 13 are arranged on the supporting member 4 in the region of the lateral flanges 11, said pins engaging the apertures 12 in the functional position (Figure 1, Figure 2) of the supporting member 4. The supporting member 4 is, thus, locked.

The supporting member 4 is laterally provided with a slide 3 which is a plastics member in this embodiment and pressed into an aperture of the supporting member.

As can be seen in Figure 3, said slide 3 rests on the floor on which the piece of furniture stands when the supporting member 4 is in pivoted position.

The piece of furniture is therefore fully transportable, i.e. it can easily be moved on the floor, when the supporting member 4 is in pivoted position.

The base fitting according to the invention is further provided with detachable clamping means 7 by means of which a cover sheet 14 can be fastened to the base fitting.

Said clamping means 7 extend into apertures in the supporting member 4 and retain the cover sheet 14. As illustrated in Figure 1,the clamping means 7 may retain the cover sheet 14 by means of a groove and tongue connection or, as illustrated in Figure 2, by means of a dowel connection.

The lower panel 10 of the piece of furniture is preferably provided with a bore 15, and the adjusting spindle 6 is on its front side provided with a slot 16 for inserting an adjusting tool.

A screw drive can be inserted through the bore 15 for adjusting the spindle 6.

So, the height of the base can also be adjusted, when the cover sheet 14 has already been mounted.

The bore is preferably covered by a cap 17, when the pieces of furniture have already been mounted.

The supporting member 4 is preferably provided with clamping means 9 carrying a guide rail for a base drawer.

When the supporting member 4 is in pivoted position, the guide rail can easily be engaged into the supporting member by means of said clamp means 9.

Claims

1. A base fitting for pieces of furniture comprising a supporting member and an adjusting member mounted in said supporting member by means of an adjusting spindle, wherein said supporting member is pivotable about a horizontal axle and linked to a fastening member adapted to be fixed to the piece of furniture.

2. A base fitting according to claim 1, wherein said axle of said supporting member is positioned outside of the vertical center plane I-I of said supporting member, said center plane being parallel to said axle.

3. A base fitting according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said supporting member is retained between two lateral flanges of said fastening member, and wherein said supporting member is provided with one of a number of lateral pins extending into a corresponding hole in the adjacent lateral flange, when said supporting member is in the supporting position.

4. A base fitting according to one of claims 1 through 3, wherein said supporting member is provided with a lateral sliding member resting on the floor on which the piece of furniture stands, when said supporting member is in pivoted position.
