Abstract

A spanner, for use with hexagon- headed bushes used at the ends of electrical conduits, consisting of a shaft 2 and a head portion 3 having a tubular member 4 for insertion into the bush and a projecting portion 6 extending part way around the periphery of this tubular member and having two flat sides 7, 8 angled at 120 DEG to form a V- shape which together with the tubular member forms a slot to receive a portion of the bush head. The projecting portion 6 may be adjustable relative to the tubular member. The spanner may have different size heads at each end. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to spanners This invention relates to an improved spanner especially useful for applying a male bush to the end of a threaded metal tube such as a conduit.
When installing electrical services the electrical cables are frequently encased in metal conduits which carry them between, for example, the fuse box and junction boxes or points.
It is usual for the conduit to be firmly attached to the junction box or fuse box by means of a threaded male bush which is inserted from the interior of the box through a convenient hole therein and then screwed into the correspondingly threaded female end of the conduit. The holes in the said box are often in relatively inaccessible parts thereof, for example close to a wall or a corner, so that the process of tightening the bush into the conduit using conventional open ended or ring spanners can be difficult.
I have now developed a new form of spanner which is especially suitable for such use since it requires only limited access to the adjacent flat surfaces of the end of the bush.
Accordingly, therefore, the present invention provides a spanner suitable for application to a threaded hollow cylindrical member having at one end a peripheral outwardly extending lip formed with adjacent flat side portions, each of which said portions being parallel to a diameter of the said bush, comprising a shaft and head portion, the head portion including a cylindrical member extending outwardly therefrom and capable of being inserted into said hollow member and a portion projecting from the said head parallel to the axis of the cylindrical member and including two arm elements forming a V shape and defining a slot between the said portion and the said cylindrical member to receive the said adjacent side portions of said hollow member.
Preferably the cylindrical portion of the said head includes an axial passageway extending therethrough.
The head portion may be integral with the shaft, or it may be detachable to enable one shaft to be used with a number of differently sized heads.
The projecting portion including the V-forming arm elements may be integral with the head or it may be slidably attached to the head or to the shaft for adjustable movement towards or away from the said cylindrical portion, thereby varying the dimensions of the said slot to permit the said spanner to be used with differently sized hollow members.
The invention will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of a plan view of one embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic representation of a cross section along the line A-A of Fig. 1, Figure 3 is a diagrammatic representation of a perspective view of part of the embodiment of Fig. 1, Figure 4 is a diagrammatic illustration of one use of the embodiment of the invention described with reference to Fig. 1, Figure 5 is a section through a second embodiment.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings, a spanner 1 comprises a shaft 2 and a head portion 3. A tubular portion 4 having its axis normal to the shaft 2 extends from the head 3 and includes a passageway 5 open at both ends. A portion 6 projects outwardly from the head 3 parallel to the axis of the tubular portion 4 and includes side portions 7 and 8 forming a V making an angle of 120 and defining with tubular portion 4 a slot 9.
In use, for attaching a threaded hollow bush of the type herein before described, and having a hexagon shaped lip head, to a correspondingly threaded end of a conduit tube, the tubular portion 4 of the spanner 1 is inserted into the hollow bush and the extending lip thereof retained in the slot 9, the flat portions of the said lip being engaged by the sides 7 and 8 of the slot 9 thus enabling the bush to be turned for tightening onto the said conduit.
The external diameter of the tubular portion 4 is preferably arranged to be a sliding fit into the bush and the external dimensions of the head, other than adjacent the projecting portion 6, arranged to be the same or less than the maximum diameter of the bush lip.
Use of the spanner is illustrated in Fig. 4. A conduit 10, carrying electrical cable 13, is attached to an electrical wall box 11 by means of a hexagon headed bush 12, the head portion of the bush being of greater diameter than the threaded portion. Cables 1 3 are passed through the passageway 5 of the head of spanner 1 to enable the tubular portion 4 to enter into the hollow portion of the bush 12, the lip portion 1 4 entering into slot 9 and the sides of the hexagon head being engaged by the sides 7 and 8 of the projecting portions of the spanner.
In a second embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 5, like parts being numbered as in Figs. 1 to 3, the shaft of the spanner carries two heads adapted for use with different sized bushes.
An adjustable form of head is achieved by making the projecting portion 6 slidable along the shaft 2 in order that the dimensions of the slot 9 may be varied at will. Thus the projecting portion 6 may be located in guide slots formed in the shaft and retained in any desired position by means of a grub screw passing through the said portion and locating in recesses based at predetermined distances along the handle of the slot to correspond with particular bush sizes.
