Abstract
A tyre removing device comprises a plate 10 having threaded stubs 11, 12 for engagement in the bolt holes of a wheel hub, and a spigot 14 for passing axially through the central aperture thereof. A ring 15 is carried on the spigot by cruciform arms 16 with a hole 17, and rests on the tyre immediately adjacent the wheel rim. A threaded nut 20 with handles 21 can be screwed down the threaded spigot 14 to exert pressure via washers 19 on the ring to thereby break the seal between a tyre and the wheel rim by pressing the wall of the tyre inwardly. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Tyre removing device
This invention relates to a device for removing tyres from vehicle wheels, particularly tubeless tyres.
Removal of tyres for repair or replacement generally speaking either requires prolonged and exhausting work with tyre levers, or the motorist seeking professional garage facilities which must be paid for.
Further more, the use of tyre levers is only practicable with tyres having separate inner tubes because even when a tubeless tyre has been deflated, as they are likely to damage the tyre's sealing rim by application of excess pressure at a few places, and prevent proper reflation of the tyre due to the presence of leaks. Consequently, heretofore, the motorist has had little option but to resort to service stations for tyre changing, with consequent expense, the devices developed for use by garages for removing tyres being too expensive for the ordinary motorist.
An object of this invention is to provide a simple tyre removing device which is capable of removing tubeless tyres without significant risk of damage to the sealing rim, and is within the financial means and operational scope of the ordinary practical motorist.
In accordance with the invention, a tyre removing device comprises means having a spigot mountable on the central disc of a wheel, with the spigot extending axially of the wheel, presser means carried on the spigot capable of contacting a tyre immediately adjacent the wheel rim all around the periphery of the wheel and means movable on the spigot for exerting pressure on the presser to clause.
the latter to break the seal between a tyre and wheel rim.
The presser is preferably a ring member of appropriate dimensions, and the spigot is preferably threaded, the pressure exerting means being a complementary nut, actuable e.g. by handles. The means having the spigot may be securable by bolts into the bolt holes of the wheel disc, ordinarily used for securing the wheel to an axle.
A preferred embodiment of tyre removing device according to the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a sectional view showing the device assembled for use on a wheel from which a tyre is to removed.
The device comprises a circular plate 10 having a pair of threaded stubs 11,12 spaced suitably for insertion through respective diagonally opposed bolt holes in a wheel disc 13. The plate 10 also carries an axial threaded rod 14, for passing through the central hub aperture of the wheel disc 13. The part of the rod protruding through the wheel disc carries loosely a circular ring 15, carried on the rod by a cruciform array of arms 16 having a central hole 17 large enough to slide easily on the rod 14. This ring 15 has a diameter such that it can seat on the tyre immediately adjacent the wheel run, all around the periphery of the wheel. Above the ring 15 on rod 14 are carried a large washer 18 and a small washer 19, on the latter of which a threaded nut 20 bears.
This nut 20 has three radially equi-spaced handles 21 for rotating the nut and thus moving it up and down on the threaded rod 14.
The studs 11,12 are in use firmly secured to the -wheel disc 13 using nut and washer assembiies 22.
In use, the edge of the ring 15 is seated on the tyre immediately adjacent the wheel rim all around the periphery of the wheel, and the nut 20 is rotated to move it downwards and exert pressure on the ring 15 and thus on the tyre. The pressure exerted is greater than can be exerted by other manual means, enabling the seal to be broken, but being exerted evenly all around the tyre no local damage or deformation which would prevent the reestablishment of the seal.
The device is simple, and usable without special training and can be supplied to a cost comparable with other specialised tools used by motorists. With its use the ordinary practically minded motorist can change tubeless tyres as well as tubed tyres without fear of damaging the former by using tyre levers or the like, and with a saving in garage expenses.
1. Atyre removing device comprising means including a spigot, said means being mountable on the central disc of a wheel with the spigot extending axially through the disc, presser means carried on the spigot capable of contacting a tyre immediately adjacent the wheel rim at at least one zone of the periphery of the wheel, and means movable on the spigot for exerting pressure on the presser means to cause the latter to break the seal between such tyre and wheel rim.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein said mountable means comprises a plate having bolt means extending therefrom for engagement, through a diagonally opposed pair of wheel securing apertures in the central disc of the wheel; the spigot extending from the centre of the plate.
3. A device according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the presser means comprises a ring member of appropriate dimensions, carried on the spigot by radial arms or spokes.
4. A device according to any preceding claim wherein the spigot is screw threaded and receives a threaded nut having wing handles for bearing on the presser means and exerting pressure thereon.
5. A device according to claim 3 or claim 4 as appendant to claim 3 wherein the radial arms of the presser means form a cruciform array with a central hole for the spigot, and one nut bears on the arms via a large and a small washer.
