Abstract

A ruler comprises a transparent elongate member 1 having bevelled edge portions 2, 3 with suitable markings and a recess 4 in one, preferably a rear, face. The recess accommodates, at its base, a strip 5 bearing indicia on at least one of its faces, and is held in position in the recess by a transparent cover 7 engaging within the recess. Preferably, the rear face of the transparent elongate member 1 and a face of the cover 7 are coplanar to define a planar base of the ruler. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Ruler The present invention relates to a ruler for educational use or also for designers and draughtsmen, having characteristics that differentiate it completely from known rulers.
A ruler is an essential item for schoolchildren and students and, bearing in mind that the users are children, the ruler forming the object of the invention is provided with advertising or publicity material, teaching material, or simply with anything that promotes interest in the said article.
The ruler in question is essentially characterised in that it comprises a transparent profile of suitable cross-section provided with a recess of conventional dimensions in one of its faces. A strip with graphical representations on at least one of its faces may be housed in the bottom of the said recess, the strip being retained and protected within the recess by means of a transparent cover that fits therein.
More specifically, the recess may be situated in the rear or lower face of the profile, and the cover, once housed in the recess, remains coplanar with respect to the said rear face.
In order to provide a better understanding of the disclosures of the present description, reference will be made to the accompanying drawing which illustrates, merely by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.
In the said drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective exploded view of the ruler; Figure 2 is a cross-sections exploded view of the ruler; Figure 3 is a similar view, but of the assembled ruler; and Figure 4 is a plan view of the actual assembled ruler.
The afore-described ruler consists, as can be seen from the drawing, of a transparent profile 1 with bevelled sections 2 and 3 along its longitudinal edges, provided with graduated scales known per se.
The back of the profile 1 contains a cavity 4 in the base of which is housed a strip 5 provided with graphical inscriptions and legends 6 on both sides.
A transparent cover 7 engages in the recess or cavity 4 and is advantageously secured thereto by means of an adhesive.
As may readily be seen from the description, the ruler has the novelty that it incorporates the strip 5, both of whose sides are visible and may carry graphical reproductions, teaching material, inscriptions and legends relating thereto, scholastic texts, or simply publicity and advertising material.
The strip remains perfectly protected by the cover 7.
The ruler is very simple but, by virtue of this fact, provides some features that make it more attractive and, depending on the inscriptions of the strip, may even be used as a publicity or teaching aid.
The materials employed in the construction of the ruler, the shape and dimensions thereof, the type of inscriptions reproduced on the strip and such ancillary details as may be shown thereon will be independent of the object of the invention and will not affect its essence.
1. Ruler comprising a transparent elongate member provided in one of its faces with a recess in the bottom of which may be accommodated a strip with indicia on at least one of its sides, the said strip being retained in the recess by means of a transparent cover engaging therein.
2. Ruler according to Claim 1, wherein the recess is provided in the rear face of the elongate member, and the cover is arranged to be coplanar with respect to the said rear face.
3. Ruler substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
