Abstract
206,415. Stedman, L. B. Jan. 26, 1923. Two-stroke-cycle engines.-A pair of cylinders A, B, on a common crank case, the pistons being connected to the same crank pin have their charge compressed in the crank case 7 and in a chamber 8 in communication with the case through ports 4, 5. On the down stroke the piston in cylinder B closes the port 4 and the charge in the chamber 8 then enters the cylinder through the transfer passage 2. The cylinder A receives its charge directly from the crank case. In a modification three or more cylinders may be arranged on one crank case, one cylinder being charged from the crank case, the others from chambers separated from the case during the charging period. A valve may be used to control the port 4 instead of using the piston. Using engines as described above as units, engines may be built up by arranging a number in line, or around a fixed shaft to form a radial revolving- cylinder engine. Two pairs of cylinders may be used on opposite sides of a common crank case, the chambers 8 being divided off and the cranks being at 180‹; engines may be built up using such opposed arrangements as units.
