Abstract
A weather excluder comprises an elongate sill member e.g. of extruded aluminium having two longitudinal grooves having their openings facing each other, an elongate flexible strip 12 preferably of neoprene rubber having lugs which engage in the grooves and two end pieces 23 which may be screwed (26) to a door frame to hold the sill member and the flexible strip in position. The upper surface of the strip 12 forms a seal with the underside of a closed door and is provided with a number of open ended passages, 29 to facilitate deformation of the strip for sealing engagement with the bottom of the door and 30, 31 to engage with the projections 27 of the end pieces 23. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A weather excluder for use with door sills
The present invention relates to weather excluders which are integrally mounted with a door sill to hinder draught and rain from entering a building.
In present arrangements of this kind it is necessary to disturb the threshold in order to fit the sill in position when the sill is to be fitted in an existing building.
According to the present invention there is provided a weather excluder comprising an elongate sill member having two longitudinal grooves having their openings substantially facing one another; an elongate flexible strip having lugs for engagement with the two grooves and an upper surface which, in use, forms a seal with the underside of a closed door; and two end pieces, each provided with means for attachment to a respective portion of the door frame, and with means to hold the sill member and the flexible strip in position.
In another aspect the invention comprises an elongate sill member, two end pieces located one each end of a channel in the sill member and by means of which the excluder is fitted to the door frame; and an elongate flexible strip, which for use is fitted and retained in the channel between the end pieces to form a seal with the underside of a closed door.
Advantageously the end pieces taper from top to bottom to provide a narrower portion at the top which avoid fouling the door base at its corners, and a wider portion at the bottom to give adequate location for the sill member. The end pieces are preferably fastened to the door frame by screws, in which case the end pieces should be provided with apertures therefor.
The invention will be understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof given by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sill member and the end pieces;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a weather excluder according to the present invention;
Figure 3 is a front view of an end piece of the embodiment of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a side view of the end piece of
Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a cross section view of the sill member of the embodiment of Figure 2; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a further embodiment of the sill member and the end pieces.
The weather excluder illustrated comprises four separate elements; an elongate extruded aluminium sill member 1 a flexible strip 12 which provides a seal against a door when the excluder is in use, and two end pieces 13 which fit one each end of the sill member 11.
The sill member 11 has four legs which extend the length of the member and by which it is firmly located in the door threshold by cement or adhesive. The sill is arranged with a vertical leg 14 facing the inside of the building. The other legs are an inwardly directed leg 15 connected to the vertical leg 14, and an inwardly directed leg 16 connected to an outwardly directed leg 17 which forms the profile of the outwardly facing side of the member 11. The leg 17 has a foot 18 for added support.
The sill member 11 has an upwardly facing channel 19 between the two pairs of legs. On each side of the channel 19 is an inwardly facing longitudinal groove 21,22. The flexible strip 12 slides into the respective grooves 21,22 and is held in position by the end pieces 13. The end pieces 13 each comprise a body 23 with a narrower lower section 23a adapted to fit into and cooperate with the channel 19. On each side of the narrower lower section a respective lug 24, 25 is designed to engage the grooves 21,22. The flexible strip 12, which may be of neoprene rubber or the like suitable material, is provided with three shaped open ended passages 29, 30 and 31 which extend the complete length of the flexible strip 12.The end pieces 13 each have a central hole 26, by means of which they can be attached to the door frame, and protrusions 27 which in operative position engage in the passages 30 and 31 of the flexible strip 12. The body 23 is tapered to provide a narrow top which does not interfere with the bottom of the door, and a bottom which firmly engages the bottom of the channel 19 to hold the sill member 11 in position. The side edges 28 of the top part of the body 23 are curved and the corners of the protrusions are chamferred for preferred design.
In use the end pieces 13 are placed in an engaged position on the sill member 11 with the lugs 24, 25 engaged in the grooves 21,22 respectively. The sill member 11 is then secured in position in the door threshold by cement or mustic sealant. Each of the end pieces 13 is then slid along the sill member to the relevant end thereof and screw secured to an immediately abutting portion of the door frame. The flexible member 12 is then pressed into position in the sill member 11 with the base edges engaged in the grooves 21, 22 and the the open ends of the passages 30 and 31 engaged on the protrusions 27 of the end pieces 13. The provision of the passage 29 in use allows the flexible member 12 to readily deform on engagement with the bottom of the door to give one an effective seal to substantially prevent the passage past the seal of draughts and/or rain.
A further embodiment of the invention, as illustrated in Figure 6 of the accompanying drawings. In this embodiment the outwardly facing side of the member 11 is vertical and further the overall configuration of the inwardly directed leg 16a and an outward vertical leg 1 7a corresponds to the configuration of the vertical leg 14 and the inwardly directed leg 15. The channel 19 with the inwardly facing longitudinal grooves 21,22 remains unchanged. Similarly the end pieces 13 remain unchanged so that the manner of use of the weather excluded is the same as described above.
In the case where one envisages use of the weather excluder of the present invention in relatively long lengths and in conjunction for example with a wooden floor, it is proposed, as shown in Figure 6 of the accompanying drawings, that the bottom surface of the channel 19 be provided with a plurality of spaced apart screw holes 32, to facilitate in use affixing the excluded to said floor.
Claims (10)
