Abstract

The invention relates to an adjustable arm to be attached to a golf trolley for the purpose of holding an umbrella in order that golfer and his equipment may be protected in inclement weather. Adjustment may be provided by means of swivel joints or ratchets or a combination thereof and is necessary in order to fix in position to afford the best protection. The invention allows a golfer to have one hand free while pulling the trolley. When stationary it allows both hands to be free, and to remain under cover allowing for preparation to be made before stepping out to play a shot, and also while recording his score. When the umbrella is not required the invention allows for the umbrella to be furled and adjusted to be alongside the golf bag leaving the equipment accessable while being conveniently ready for immediate reuse.

Description

SPECIFICATION Adjustable arm for attaching an umbrella to a trolley or caddy cart The invention relates to a means of attaching an umbrella to a trolley or golf caddy cart. The invention is particularly, but not exclusively, concerned with providing protection for golfers and their equipment, without having to hold an umbrella by hand.
This may be achieved by clamping, screwing or welding a base block (hereinafter called the base) to the handle shaft, or handle of the trolley, so that it will not interfere with the mechanism of a trolley that is intended to fold. In the case of new trolleys, this or a suitable adaptable feature may be incorporated into the original design.
An extension bar or tube (hereinafter called the stem) may be part of, or assembled to, the base and can be in one or more parts. The stem will protrude from the base in any direction for any chosen length. From here a change of direction may be achieved by means of a bend.
Alternatively, a swivel, ball, coupling or ratchet type joint may be introduced to achieve the change of direction. The stem will then continue for any chosen length.
At the opposite end of the stem from the base will be an adaptor. The adaptor may be part of the stem or it can be assembled to the stem. The adaptor may be a sliding adaptor, or it may be a fixed adaptor.
The adaptor will incorporate a means of holding the umbrella handle or shaft. This may be in the form of a moulded receptacle or similar device into which the umbrella may be pushed, or by an arrangement to clamp around the umbrella handle or shaft. The umbrella is then in position to be unfurled and provide protection, leaving one hand free when moving and both hands free when stationary.
The adjustment of the umbrella in any direction to afford the best protection, may be achieved in the following ways or combination thereof: When the stem is fitted to the base it will have around part of its circumference a series of flats, serrations or slots. These will allow a radial movement in a series of arcs according to the degrees of flats, serrations or slots. Positions may be changed, and held by means of a clamping bolt, spring loaded locating pins, or a ratchet may be used.
The base may be made of parts to allow two mating faces to bear matching rings of serrations or slots. These will provide movement in an arc at right angles to the movement described above.
The serrations or slots may be disengaged or locked manually, or one face may be spring loaded to the other. Alternatively, one face only may bear serrations or slots and the position be fixed by a spring loaded locating pin, or a ratchet may be used.
Where the stem changes direction other than by bending, a joint made up of parts similar to those described above may be incorporated.
Alternatively at this joint a socket may be provided which will be lockable around a ball. In its free state, this joint will allow the umbrella to move in a spherical plane and may be locked in a position to afford best protection.
This device or those previously described may be incorporated in the adaptor, or any combination thereof may be used. When protection is no longer required it is intended that the umbrella be furled and by utilisation of systems described, be suspended to lie parallel to and alongside the golf bag, ready for immediate re-use and to be of no inconvenience to the golfer.
1. An adjustable umbrella holder which may be folded and carried in a golf bag until an occasion arises to make the use of an umbrella necessary.
2. On such an occasion as in claim one the invention by means of clamp block, vee block eyebolt spherical washer and nut will be clamped to the stem or handle (which may vary in diameter) of a golf trolley.
3. According to the claim an umbrella can then be fixed into an umbrella cup to form part of the assembly.
4. That the assembly can then be moved in a spherical arc to afford the most protection and there locked in order that a golfer may be under protection while preparing part of the equipment or person to play a golf stroke.
5. That the invention provides for the remaining equipment to be still protected while the stroke is being played.
6. That the invention allows a golfer to have one hand free while walking with the trolley and both hands free while stationary and still remain protected.
7. That the invention when no longer deemed necessary to provide protection allows the umbrella to be stowed ready for immediate re-use yet cause no hindrance to access to the golf equipment.
