Abstract
The invention relates to the formation of seamless branched parts from cylindrical hollow members. Known methods cannot produce connections branching off at right angles to the axis of the tube axis. According to the invention, a spherical cup or annular head is first produced from the hollow member after which branches are formed from the cup or bead in a per se known manner. Apparatus according to the invention comprises a tool carrier (3) surrounded by a ring member (14), between which parts the cup or bead is formed. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Methods and apparatus for producing seamless branched parts from hollow members.
The invention relates to a method and apparatus for producing highly stressed seamless branched parts from hollow members, particularly with large nominal widths.
It is known to produce branched parts from seamless hollow members by necking the wall, see German Patent Application No.
1 955278 and British Patent Specification No.
646812. it is also known to produce branches by upsetting the hollow member in a die; see German Patent Specification No.
307208. In these known methods, the branch connection is simply produced by necking the cylindrical tube wall and the length of the connection is dependent on the material displaced. These methods cannot however, produce connections branching off at right angles to the tube axis.
It has already been proposed to produce ball housings in a sealed grooved die by upsetting and rolling see German Patent No.
2828353.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a method of producing highly stressed seamless branched parts from hollow members, particularly with large nominal widths, in which one or more branches branching off at right angles or at angles other than right angles can be obtained reproducibly from cylindrical hollow object.
In the present invention it is possible to produce not only hollow members with a spherical central portion but also branched parts which can be mounted both at any desired points over the periphery of the spherical bead and also at various spacings over the length of the seamless hollow member. It is also possible to produce eccentric spherical regions.
One of the most important advantages of the method of the invention is that, owing to the branch connections formed from the spherically rolled annular bead, a substantially greater spacing from the external diameter of the hollow member is achieved than can be obtained directly by conventional necking of a hollow member.
A further advantage is due to the geometry of the zone of mingling of the ball casing and cylinder, it may be of high load-bearing capacity owing to the rotationally symmetrical construction. Moreover, the products made according to the invention can be suitable for use in the presence of dynamic stress from outside, e.g. in construction components for marine technology. Thanks to the length of the connections, machining and testing of the seam of the pipe welded on is made easier, particularly in high pressure apparatus.
In contrast to pipe connections which are produced mechanically, e.g. by milling, from forged preliminary workpieces, a workpiece produced by the method according to the invention has a natural grain flow. Considerably less energy is required in production than in the case of forged preliminary workpieces.
The invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, in partial section of apparatus according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation from
Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is an alternative for the lower die,
Figure 4 shows the casing of a seamless heat exchanger with the branches offset by 180', Figure 5 shows a manifold with branches distributed over the length and circumference and at 90 to the main axis;
Figure 6 shows the housing for producing a mixed current, in a one-piece construction, with a curved portion produced in known manner;
Figures 7a and b show shaped parts for subsequent use in the manufacture of fittings;
Figure 8 shows a shaped part with eccentrically formed spherical portion; and
Figure 9 shows a branching element for an open framework.
As shown in Fig. 1, a tool carrier 3 and longitudinally movable support 4 with rollershaped abutments 5 and a lateral stand 6, which is also longitudinally movable, are arranged on a bed 1. Mounted in the free passage between the tool carriers 3 and the roller-shaped abutments 5 is a closed ring member 1 4 with inner profiling 7, the axis of which runs parallel to the axis of the tool carrier 3. The internal width of the ring member 1 4 is correspondingly greater than the external diameter of the hollow member 2 which is to be put in. An upper die 8 is movably mounted on the tool carrier 3. The longitudinally movable and fixable ring member 1 4 is held at the sides by backing rollers 9. The forming tools 14 and 8 are actuated by a drive 10.The bearing 1 3 for the tool carrier 3 which is opposite the drive end is hinged to enable the hollow member 2 to be inserted and removed. The workpiece 2 is supported by centering arms 11 which are adjustable in height.
Fig. 2 shows the arrangement for supporting and guiding the workpiece.
Fig. 3 shows an alternative solution to the ring member 14, in the form of a reciprocatable, profiled, planar lower die 1 2.
Figs. 4 to 9 show various branched parts which can be produced by the method according to the invention.
In order to produce a branched part using the process according to the invention, the hollow member 2 is placed in the apparatus, which has been moved out to the required distance, with the upper die 8 and ring member 14. The tools, which are moved radially towards each other, are set in rotation by the drive 10 and engage with each other so as to deform the workpiece in the grooved die 7 thus provided. The axial securing of the ring member 1 4 is obtained by means of the laterally mounted backing rollers 9.
