Abstract

Fishing bait is pre-prepared by initially forming a mass of dough around a fishing hook, cooking the dough, for example by baking or frying, to produce a cohesive mass thereof on the hook and imparting a fish-attracting odour and/or taste to the cooked dough.

Description

SPECIFICATION Fishing bait This invention relates to fishing bait. The selection and use of the correct bait is frequently a problem for the fisherman, particularly when fishing in unaccustomed waters. Either he may not know the best bait to suit a particular locality or that bait may not at the time be available locally, or else the most suitable bait may be difficult to form and/or retain on the hook.
For example, bread and lugworms which are both commonly used as bait tend to become detached when long casts are attempted. A further disadvantage with natural bait is that it must be fresh; it has a short effective life and when stale has an unpleasant odour which can be transferred to the fisherman's clothes and person.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and advantageous method of pre-preparing fishing bait and the bait which results therefrom. A further object is to provide a long-life bait which reliably retains its preformed shape on the hook from which it does not detach when very long casts are attempted or achieved. A still further object is to provide such a bait which can be prepacked so that a fisherman can easily carry with him a variety of baits from which he can readily select the one most appropriate to the locality, if necessary by a process of trial and error.
A method of pre-preparing fishing bait, according to the invention, comprises forming a mass of a dough around a fishing hook, baking, frying or otherwise cooking the dough to produce a cohesive mass thereof while so formed on the hook, and imparting a fish-attracting odour and/or taste to the cooked dough.
The dough is preferably a mass consisting of flour or meal moistened and kneaded into a paste, and it may be shaped to simulate fish bait worms or any other shape attractive to fish. The hook used can be chosen to suit a particular fish or form of bait; for example it may be a multi-prong hook or have extra barbs on the back.
The fish-attracting odour and/or taste may be imparted during the cooking process or subsequently. For example, formed dough may be fried in a fish oil to impart a fishy smell and taste.
When cooking is achieved by baking this may be carried out in an appropriate atmosphere to provide the desired odour or taste. Alternatively the cooked dough may be painted with a substance which imparts the desired odour and/or taste, and this substance may then be such as to provide a water-resistant and/or otherwise protection coating for the bait. As a further alternative the cooked dough may be placed in an odour and/or taste-imparting atmosphere for an appropriate time, and it will be appreciated that the method of the invention enables a bait to be prepared which has any degree of rancidity or other flavour desired.
The invention provides a novel fishing bait in the form of a confectionery which is sufficiently waterproof and cohesive to resist the action and movement of the water during fishing, while being still sufficiently frangible for a fish jaw when firmly on the hook to break it off. The bait can be supplied in a hermetically sealed pack, and it can for convenience be supplied complete with trace for direct connection to the fishing line.
1. A method of pre-preparing fishing bait, comprising forming a mass of dough around a fishing hook, baking, frying or otherwise cooking the dough to produce a cohesive mass thereof while so formed on the hook, and imparting a fishattracting odour and/or taste to the cooked dough.
2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the dough consists of flour or meal moistened and kneaded into a paste.
3. A method according to either one of the preceding claims, wherein the forming of the dough around the fishing hook provides a shaping which simulates fish bait, worms or another shape attractive to fish.
4. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the hook is chosen to suit a particular fish and/or to suit the form of bait used.
5. A method according to claim 4, wherein the hook is a multi-prong hook.
6. A method according to claim 4, wherein the hook has extra barbs on the back thereof.
7. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said fish-attracting odour is imparted to the dough during the cooking process.
8. A method according to claim 7, wherein the formed dough is fried in fish oil to impart a fishy smell and taste.
9. A method according to claim 7, wherein the formed dough is baked in an atmosphere such as to impart the'desired odour and/or taste during the cooking process.
10. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the fish-attracting odour and/or taste is imparted to the dough subsequent to the cooking process.
1 A method according to claim 10, wherein the formed and cooked dough is painted over with a substance which imparts the desired odour and/or taste.
12. A method according to claim 1 wherein the substance with which the cooked dough is painted provides a water-resistant and/or otherwise protective coating for the bait.
1 3. A method according to claim 11, wherein the cooked dough is placed in an odour and/or taste imparting atmosphere.
14. Fishing bait prepared according to the method of any one of the preceding claims.
1 5. Fishing bait in the form of a confectionery which is formed and cooked on a hook, and has imparted thereto a fish-attracting odour and/or taste.
