Abstract

205,537. Mitchell, E. A. June 21, 1922. Branches and mains, connecting; with valves. -In connecting branches to mains under pressure by permanently securing a saddle-piece, carrying the branch pipe, to the main and drilling the latter by means of a drill passed down through the branch and a plug valve provided therein, the joint is made fluid tight by lining the aligned holes through the saddle piece and main with a tightly-fitting ferrule of cylindrical or taper shape and externally either plain or screw threaded. A saddle-piece a, with branches b<1>, b<2> and a horizontal plug c, ported at c<1>, is secured to the main pipe d by U-shaped bolts e, a layer d<1> of packing material being inserted between them. A drill f is inserted through a stuffing-box g screwed to the branch b<1>, the plug opened and a hole drilled through the saddle-piece and main. The saddle-piece may be initially drilled, but with a hole of smaller diameter than the drill to be used. The drill f is withdrawn into the branch b<1>, the plug closed, and the stuffing-box and drill removed. A ferrule m is dropped into the branch b<1> and the stuffing-box g and a plunger secured. The plug c is opened, allowing the ferrule to drop and the latter is forced into position, as in Fig. 4, by means of the plunger. In the case of a screwed ferrule, the drill is replaced by a screw tap, which screws the aligned holes preferably in taper shape. The ferrule m is inserted as before and screwed into position by means of a tool adapted to engage it, as by notches m<1>, Fig. 5. The service pipe is finally attached to the branch b by a screwed sleeve. The saddle-piece and stopcoek casing may be a single casting or in separate parts connected, for example, by a stuffing-box joint. The stopcook casing b<3> may be internally threaded to receive a stuffing-box n for the plug spindle c<2> and externally threaded to receive a screw cap, packed if necessary, to protect the outer end of the spindle.
