Description

SPECIFICATION Br,ushes This invention is concerned with brushes, espe cia,,Uy hairbrushes.
A kind of hairbrush is known in which, instead of more conventional bristles, stiff metal pins are mounted in a resilient cushion. Outer end portions of the pins are shaped to avoid scratching the scalp.
The cushion is usually mounted in a holder, which may comprise a projecting handle.
According to the invention a brush comprises a plurality of metal pins which project from a cushion in which they are mounted, an outer end portion of each pin being covered by a plastics material.
Preferably the outer end portion of each pin is covered by a smoothly rounded blob of a plastics material.
There now follows a description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawing, of a hairbrush which illustrates the invention by way of example.
The drawing shows the brush diagrammatically in longitudinal section.
The brush, which is a hairbrush, comprises a holder 10 comprising a handle portion 12. A cushion 14 is mounted in the holder and comprises a sheet of a resilient rubber material which is held by the holder with an outer surface 16 of the sheet convex. A plurality of stiff steel pins 18 are mounted in the cushion, and project from the cushion. Each pin 18 is secured in the cushion by means of a head 20 on the pin, to engage an inner surface 22 of the cushion, and a layer 24 of a lining material; the layer 24 is adhered to the inner surface 22 of the cushion, to trap the pin heads 20.
An outer end portion of each pin 18 is covered by a blob 26 of a plastics material, the blob being smoothly rounded to provide a smooth surface which will not scratch the scalp in use of the brush.
The blob is applied in a liquid form after the outer end portion of the pin has been roughened or otherwise suitably prepared to ensure good adhesion of the plastics material.
As an alternative construction, the layer 24 may be omitted and the pins 18 secured by other suitable means.
1. A brush comprising a plurality of metal pins which project from a cushion in which they are mounted, an outer end portion of each pin being covered by a plastics material.
2. A brush according to Claim 1 in which the outer end portion of each pin is covered by a smoothly rounded blob of a plastics material.
3. A brush according to either of Claims 1 and 2 in which the metal pins are of steel.
4. A brush according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 in which the cushion comprises a sheet of a resilient rubber material which is held by a holder of the brush with an outer surface of the sheet convex, and each pin comprises a head which engages an inner surface of the sheet to secure the pin in the cushion.
5. A brush according to Claim 4 in which a layer of a lining material is adhered to the inner surface of the sheet to trap the pin heads.
6. A brush substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
