Abstract

A household drying and airing apparatus for domestic purposes in which a bearing bush is provided in the wall of a building through which slides a pole or bar for the suspension of washing or other articles outside the building bearing roller or rollers in the bushing over which the pole or bar slides, locking means for securing the pole or bar in the extended position and a stabilising ring for preventing the pole or bar from movement during loading and unloading. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in drying and airing apparatus This invention relates to improvements in drying and airing apparatus.
It has been proposed to employ bamboo poles extending outwards from the wall of a building for the suspension of washing or other articles and the object of the present invention is to provide a bearing in the wall through which slides a metal pole or bar mounted below a window in the building through which the washing or other articles are applied to and withdrawn from the pole or bar.
According to the invention apparatus for drying or airing household articles comprises a bearing bush when in use to extend from side to side through the wall of a building, having flanges at each end to engage the surfaces of the wall, a pole or bar extending through the bearing bush and engaging a roller or (rollers) therein the inner end of the pole or bar being closed by a member screwed therein, a locking device pivoted on the inner flange to engage the member on the end of the pole or bar to lock the pole or bar in the extended position, a stabilising ring pivoted on the inner flange at right angles to the locking member and a spring loaded ball carried by the locking device to engage a recess in the stabilising ring to prevent movement of the locking device until the stabilising ring has been released.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the pole or bar in the extended position; Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in section showing the pole or bar with drawn into a room, Figure 3 is a vertical section to a large scale showing a detail of Fig. 1, Figure 4 is a similar section to Fig. 3 showing part of Fig. 2 to a large scale.
An aluminium pole or bar 1 is mounted slide in bearing bush 2. The bearing bush 2 extends through the wall A of a building below a window B in the wall and is formed with a flange 3 at the outer end to engage the outer surface of the wall a flange 3a at the inner end to enter a recess in the wall. The flange 3 supports a concave roller 4 and rollers 4a may be provided at the inner end to engage the upper surface of the pole or bar.
The wall A is reinforced by rods a embedded therein one on each side of the bearing 2 which is inclined to the horizontal as shown.
The inner end of the pole or bar 1 is closed by a screwed member 5 for anchoring the pole or bar in the extended position. A locking device 6 is pivoted on a bolt 7 on the flange 3a formed with a slot 6a which when in the position shown in Fig. 3 engages over the member 5 and a stop 12 locks the pole or bar 1 in the extended position and which when pivoted into the position shown in Fig. 4 frees the pole or bar from the stop 12. In order to anchor the locking device 6 a stabilising ring 8 is pivoted on a spindle 9 carried by the bearing bush 2 which can be pivoted into the room when released by a spring operated ball 11 engaging a recess 11 a in a stabilising ring 8 when the device 6 is pivoted into the position shown in Fig. 4.
In operation with the pole or bar 1 retracted into the room the locking device 6 is moved into the position shown in Fig. 4 in order to allow the pole or bar 1 to be inserted through the ring 8 into the bearing bush 2 by allowing the stop 12 to be lifted. If the room is not large enough to house the pole or bar 1 it may be inserted from outside the building.
As the pole or bar 1 is moved outwardly washing or other articles to be dried or aired are inserted over the pole or bar or suspended therefrom on hangers, the lighter articles being suspended adjacent to the outer end 2a.
The articles are applied to the pole or bar from the window B.
When the pole or bar is fully extended it is locked in position as shown in Fig. 3.
The washing or other articles such as a carpet when dry are removed from the pole or bar by releasing the locking device 6 and drawing the pole or bar into the room. The stabilising ring 8 is pivoted inwardly from the position shown in Fig. 4 to act as a brake and prevent the pole or bar from sliding inwards.
