Abstract

This invention relates to wall ties. A wall tie is provided which has transverse wings (9) for holding a sheet (17) of insulation material in the cavity (15) of a cavity wall in position against the inner leaf (14) of the wall. The wings (9) have nipples (10) to improve their holding action. The wall tie is also provided with anchor bulbs (12) to assist anchorage in mortar joints (15) and is further provided with a rectangular flange (11) to prevent moisture travelling along the central shaft (6) of the tie from the outer leaf (13) to the inner leaf (14). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and Relating to Wall Ties This invention relates to wall ties, and is particularly concerned with wall ties which incorporate means for holding insulation material in position in a cavity wall.
The present invention accordingly provides a wall tie including a central shaft which has extending therefrom a wing member, adapted, when the wall tie is in position in a cavity wall, to hold a sheet of insulation material located in the cavity against a leaf of the cavity wall.
Advantageously the central shaft is provided with a pair of discrete wing members extending diametrically opposite one another therefrom.
Advantageously also the or each wing member is provided with a nipple extending laterally therefrom, the nipple or nipples being adapted to penetrate and thereby hold the insulation material in position in the cavity wall.
The invention will now be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example, one embodiment of a wall tie according to the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the wall tie; Figure 2 is a side view; Figure 3 is an end view; and Figure 4 is a vertical section through a portion of a cavity wall, showing the wall tie in use.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings, the wall tie, which is integrally formed from mouldable plastics material, such as for example polypropylene, comprises a central shaft 6 having splayed or bifurcated ends 7 and 8. Two transverse wing members 9 are provided on the central shaft 6, and each of the wing members 9 is provided with a nipple 10.
The central shaft 6 is furthermore provided with a rectangular flange 11 the purpose of which is to prevent moisture travelling from the outer leaf of a cavity wall to the inner leaf of the wall along the wall tie. The splayed ends 7 and 8 are provided with anchor bulbs 1 2 which help to anchor the wall tie in position in a mortar joint of a cavity wall.
In a modification of the above wall tie, the position of the wing members 9 on the central shaft 6 may be varied. For example, the wing members 9 may be mounted upon a member which is in screw thread engagement with, or slidably mounted on, the central shaft 6. This facilitates use of the wall tie where sheets of insulation material of different thicknesses are used, the position of the wings being adjustable so as to take into account the different thicknesses of insulation material.
Referring to Figure 4 of the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a portion of a cavity wall having an outer leaf 13 and an inner leaf 14.
The wall tie of the present invention is shown in position with its splayed ends 7 and 8 embedded in mortar joints 15 in the leaves 13 and 14 respectively of the cavity wall and with its central shaft 6 bridging the cavity 1 6. The wing members 9 contact, and the nipples 10 penetrate, a sheet of insulation material 17, thereby holding this sheet 1 7 in position against the inner leaf 14 of the cavity wall. The rectangular flange 11 prevents moisture travelling from the outer leaf 1 3 along the central shaft 6 beyond the flange 11.
The insulation material is relatively soft and the splayed end 8 of the wall tie penetrates the sheet 1 7 of insulation material reiatively easily, especially if a knife cut or the like is made in the sheet 17.
