Abstract

The apparatus includes a casting trough or holding furnace having an outlet in a wall near its bottom, communicating with a mould via an opening in a nozzle; the opening in the nozzle being a slot which, in transverse cross sections, has an outline comprising an upper portion, a lower portion, and two end portions, the width of the slot (i.e. the spacing between the upper and lower portions) being greater near or at the two end portions than elsewhere; and, at least in the regions of greatest width, the nozzle opening having a lower boundary constituted by a run-out surface which falls in the direction from the trough or furnace to the mould and which merges without any step into the inner surface of the mould.

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for continuous horizontal casting of rectangular ingots In our British Patent Application No.
48872/78 (Serial No. 2,010,147) we describe and claim: "Apparatus for continuous horizontal casting of metals including a casting trough or holding furnace having an outlet in a wall near its bottom, communicating with a mould via an opening in a nozzle; the opening in the nozzle being a slot which, in transverse cross sections, has an outline comprising a lower portion concave upwards, which approximates to a circular arc, an upper portion convex downwards, and two end portions of smaller curvature, joining the upper and lower portions, the width of the slot (i.e. the spacing between the upper and lower portions) decreasing from a central value towards the end portions; and, at least in the region of greatest width, the nozzle opening having a lower boundary constituted by a run-out surface which falls in the direction from the trough or furnace to the mould and which merges without any step into the inner surface of the mould." The melt feed system described in detail in our Application No. 48872/78 is particularly suitable for casting round ingots or the like. A modification of that melt feed system can however also be used for casting rectangular Ingots, and the present application; divided from Application No. 48872/78, relates to this modification.
For rectangular ingots it appears that particular regions of the ingot cross section, particularly near the edges, require more heat, that is a larger hot melt feeding than other regions. Accordingly one should dispose the wider part of the pouring slot not in the middle of the slot, as required for round ingots or the like, but in the side parts of the slot, and also form the run-out surface in order to direct more metal to the said regions.
Apparatus according to the present invention, for continuous horizontal casting of metals as ingots of rectangular cross section, includes a casting trough or holding furnace having an outlet in a wall near its bottom, communicating with a mould via an opening in a nozzle; the opening in the nozzle being a slot which, in transverse cross sections, has an outline comprising an upper portion, a lower portion, and two end portions, the width of the slot (i.e. the spacing between the upper and lower portions) being greater near or at the two end portions than elsewhere; and, at least in the regions of greatest width, the nozzle opening having a lower boundary constituted by a run-out surface which falls in the direction from the trough or furnace to the mould and which merges without any step into the inner surface of the mould.
The invention may be embodied in apparatus as described in Application No.
48872/78 with reference to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings thereof, subject only to modification of the transverse cross sections of the mould 34, of the nozzle opening 31, and of the outlet 1. That is to say, the mould cross section is rectangular; the cross sections of the nozzle opening have an outline comprising an upper portion, a lower portion, and two end portions, the width of the slot (i.e. the spacing between the upper and lower portions) being greater near or at the two end portions than elsewhere; and the outlet 1 is shaped to match the nozzle opening.
