Abstract
A base 11, for mounting a rear view mirror having a mirror carrier, has an elongate body portion 12 and a central cylindrical portion 13 the open ends 15 of which are stepped and provided with recesses 19 in which projections 17c on bush 17 can be inserted. Bushes 17 are provided on the free ends of a wishbone shape mirror carrier 12 which are pulled on to the base 10 by a spring 38 such that the projections 17c are selectively positioned in recesses 19 to provide a number of predetermined orientations for the mirror carrier 12. When the carrier is subjected to an excessive force the connection 18, 31 releases the carrier from the base. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Base for vehicle rear view mirror
This invention relates to a base for mounting a
rear view mirror having a mirror carrier.
According to the present invention there is provided a base for mounting a vehicle rear view mirror having a mirror carrier and means to mount the carrier on the base including means to define a plurality of space positions of adjustment of the carrier about the base in which the carrier can be fixed with respect to the base and a releasable connection to release the carrier from the base for when the carrier is subjected to a force in excess of a certain level.
The means to define a plurality of adjustment may comprise to detent means on one of the carrier or base and a projection on the other of the carrier or base rotatable in the detent means, the detent means being locatable in a number of predetermined orientations on said one of the carrier or base, each orientation of the detent means defining a position of adjustment of the carrier about the base.
The carrier may comprise a pair of resilient arms joined together at one end, the other end of the arms being spaced apart for grippingly engaging base via the means to mount the carrier on the base.
Means of biasing the other ends of the arms together may be provided.
The arms may be formed integrally.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a partial sectional view of a base for mounting a rear view mirror having a mirror carrier; and Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of one interconnection between the mirror carrier and the base on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the accompanying drawings a mirror carrier 10 is shown mounted on a base 11. The base 11 comprises an elongate body portion 12, having spaced recess screw holes (not shown), and a central cylindrical portion 13 connected to the body portion 12 such that the axis of the cylindrical portion 13 lies at right angles to the axis of the body portion 12.
The base 11 is hollow and the ends 15 of the cylindrical portion 13 are open and stepped at seat 16.
Each open end 15 has an annular bush 17 disposed therein and each bush 17 has an elongate slot 18 extending across the centre of its upper surface.
Each bush 17 has a peripheral flange 17a which engages on its respective seat 16 and has a peripheral detent projection 17b formed in its inner surface 17c. A number of inwardly extending recesses 19 are formed on each seat 16 for locating in the recess 17b to determine the orientation of bush 17, and hence the orientation of slot 18. The recesses 19 are arranged in two groups, one group being for a left hand mirror and one for a right hand mirror.
The base 11 can be attached to a vehicle wing or door by means of bolts or screws located in the recessed holes (not shown).
The mirror carrier 10 comprises a pair of arms 20, 21 which are connected together at one end 22 and diverge to spaced ends 23. Other ends 23 are parallel to each other and have aligned cruciform holes 24 extending therethrough. Each hole 24 having an enlarged centre portion 25.
A bush 26 is provided for each hole 24, each bush 26 comprising an annular body portion 27 on the outer surface 28 of which are provided four square sectioned projections 29 which locate in respective arms 27 or the respective hole 24, and on the inner surface 30 of which are formed a pair of rounded projections 31, which locate in slot 18.
The annular bush 26 is held on its respective arm by means of an internally threaded cylindrical member 32 which is formed with an annular seat 33, which engages surface 30 ofthe bush 26. The threaded portion 34 of the cylindrical member passes through bush 26 into hole 24, and is locked in this position by stub screw 35, the head 36 ofwhich engages its respective arm 21,22.
Each cylindrical member 32 carries a hook 37 on its inner end. A spring 38 is mounted between hooks 37 to urge the ends 23 of arms 20,21 into engagemenu with base 11.
In use the base 11 is mounted on to the vehicle as described above. The bushes 17 are then set into a predetermined position 4 by locating the projections 17b on respective bush 17 into selected recesses 19.
The recesses 19 seiected determining the orientation of slot 18.
The position chosen depends on whether the mirror is to be left-hand or right-hand mirror and the length and breadth of the vehicle on which the mirror is to be mounted.
The carrier 10 is then mounted on the base 11 by locating projections 32 in slot 18 and then engaging spring 38 on hooks 37. The carrier 10 then extends at the predetermined orientation to base 11.
A mirror (not shown) can be mounted at hole 38 formed at end 22 of the carrier 10 either before or afterthe carrier 10 is mounted on the base 11.
The carrier 10 may be formed in two portions divided at chain line 40, which are then held together by the securing attachments of the mirror.
It will be appreciated that in sdme cases the arms may be made sufficiently resilient to grip the base without the provision of spring 38.
1. A base for mounting a vehicle rear view mirror having a mirror carrier amd means to mount the carrier on the base including means to define a plurality of spaced positions of adjustment of the carrier about the base in which the carrier can be fixed with respect to the base and a releasable connection to release the carrier from the base when the carrier is subjected to a force in excess of a certain level.
2. A base as claimed in claim 1 wherein the means to define a plurality of adjustments c6m- prises detent means on one of the carrier or base and a projection on the other of the carrier or base locatable in the detent means, the detent means being locatable in a number of predetermined orien
