Abstract
The brake acts on a rotary shaft 1 to which is keyed a spool 5; two or more friction lined shoes 4 are pivoted in spool 5 and act on a stationary drum 2 under centrifugal force. This force is opposed by torsional load of a spring 8 which is varied according to the angular position of a bush 9 which is free to rotate on shaft 1. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Adjustable centrifugal brake
The invention is shown on the accompanying sketch, and provides:- A rotatable shaft 1 which connected to the mechanism to be retarded in a suitable manner. A stationary brake drum 2 which has a bearing 3 to support shaft 1. Two (or more) friction lined shoes 4 pivoted in spool 5 which is keyed to shaft 1. The shoes have projecting pins 6 which protrude through elongated slots in spool 5. The pins 6 engage in grooves in member 7 which is free to rotate on shaft 1. A helical spring 8 is fixed at each end to member 7 and bush 9 which is free to rotate on shaft 1. One end of bush 9 has a series of radial grooves which engage on a pin 10 which is fitted in shaft 1. It will be seen that spring 8 acts in torsion and in addition applies force to member 7 in the direction of the arrow.
OPERATION
As shaft 1 is rotated the shoes bear against drum 2 under the influence of centrifugal force.
This force is opposed by the torsional load of spring 8 which is varied according to the angular position of bush 9.
CLAIM
1. A centrifugal brake substantially as drawn having a rotatable shaft, a spool fixed to said shaft and a stationary brake drum encompassing spool.
One or more friction faced shoes pivoted in spool and engaging with a spring loaded spider member.
A spring anchor bush engaging with fixed bush.

- **WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **.SPECIFICATION Adjustable centrifugal brake The invention is shown on the accompanying sketch, and provides:- A rotatable shaft 1 which connected to the mechanism to be retarded in a suitable manner. A stationary brake drum 2 which has a bearing 3 to support shaft 1. Two (or more) friction lined shoes 4 pivoted in spool 5 which is keyed to shaft 1. The shoes have projecting pins 6 which protrude through elongated slots in spool 5. The pins 6 engage in grooves in member 7 which is free to rotate on shaft 1. A helical spring 8 is fixed at each end to member 7 and bush 9 which is free to rotate on shaft 1.
