Abstract
A safety breech plug lock is insertable into the ejection port for cartridge shells in the gun and includes a plunger 4, which is movable between a retracted position and an extended position by a driving device 5, 6. The breech plug lock is inserted through the ejection port into the path of motion of the bolt of the gun and the plunger is extended and locked in the extended position. In this state the plunger extends past the rims of the ejection port and prevents removal of the breech plug lock through the ejection port. Preferably, the plunger includes an elastic body of rubber at its outer end. Moreover, the breech plug lock may include a spindle, which is formed as the end of a normal cartridge shell. A cartridge shell lock of the bolt cooperates with said spindle so that the bolt is retained and locked in the gun by the breech plug lock. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Breech plug lock for a gun
The present invention relates to a safety breech plug lock for firearms. The lock is inserted into the shell ejection opening of a gun and is locked there in order to prevent the insertion of a cartridge into the gun. Such a lock prevents unauthorized use of the gun. By guns are meant ball guns, shotguns, firearms and the like.
A gun should be stored in such a way that unauthorized use of the gun is prevented. The gun and/or a vital part thereof, e.g. the bolt may be kept locked up. The gun may also be provided with a breech plug, as will be described more closely below.
The object of the present invention is to attain a simple and reliable breech plug lock, which is positioned practically completely within the gun and thus is protected in its locked position against external damage by the gun.
The present invention provides e breech plug lock for a gun with a bolt, including a body, the exterior dimensions of which correspond to the size of an ejection port for cartridge shells of the gun so that the body is insertable into the ejection port; at least a plunger, which is operable in the body between a retracted position and an extracted position; a lock with a key; and a driving device for the plunger. The breech plug lock is insertable through the ejection port, when the plunger is in the retracted position, and into the path of motion of the bolt of the gun. The driving device is arranged to move the plunger to the extracted position, in which the plunger extends past the rims of the ejection port and prevents removal of the breech plug lock. The plunger is locked in the extracted position by means of the lock.
The driving device may be a rack connected with the plunger and a gear, which is rotatable by means of the key of the lock. Alternatively, the driving device may be an eccentric pin, which is rotatable by means of the key, and a cam groove in the plunger, within which the pin engages, whereby rotation of the eccentric pin by means of the key drives the plunger outwardly.
Preferably the plunger includes at its outer end an elastic body of e.g. rubber. This prevents damage to the lock through the barrel of the gun, since a tool inserted through the barrel only hits the elastic rubber body.
The breech plug lock may include a spindle, which is formed as the end of a normal cartridge shell having a peripherical groove. When the lock is inserted in the gun, the bolt may cooperate with the said groove so that the bolt is retained and locked in the gun by the breech plug lock.
For the purpose of exemplifying, preferred embodiments of the invention are described below, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, wherein

Fig. 1 shows a breech plug lock 1 according to
the present invention, which includes a body 2.
The body is closed at its ends by plungers 3, which
are movable in the body. Each plunger is provided
with a shoulder 4, which, in the retracted position
of the plunger, bears against the end of the body
and prevents further retraction of the plunger in
the body. The plunger 3 is connected with a rack 5
by means of a screw 7, the rack extending past the
centre of the body, where it meshes with a
centrally positioned gear 6. The gear is rotatable
by means of a key. The rack of each bolt meshes
with the gear on each side thereof so that the
racks are moved in opposite directions at rotation of the gear. The plunger 3 is provided at its outer
end with an insert 8 of a soft material, such as
rubber.
The gear 6 is arranged on a shaft, which may be
roted by means of the key. A set of tumbler or the
like are arranged in the housing 9 and secure that only the corresponding key can rotate the gear.
Preferably, the gear is arranged to be rotated one
revolution between two locked positions, one where the plungers 3 are retracted and one where -the plungers re extracted. When the key is
removed from the lock housing the gear cannot be
rotated even if it is exposed to violence.
The breech plug lock according to the invention operates in the following way. The body 2 is dimensioned so as to fit into the ejectior port for cartridge shells in the gun. The size of this port is generally the same in many different kinds of guns. Thus, a small number of sizes of the breech plug lock may correspond to the ejection port of a great number of gun types.
In the compressed or retracted position of the breech plug lock, which is shown in solid lines in
Fig. 1, the lock may be inserted through the ejection7 port of the gun. When the lock has been inserted in the ejection port, the key is inserted into the lock 9 and rotates the gear 6 preferably one revolution, whereupon the plungers 3 are extracted to the positions shown ir broken lines in
Fig. 1. The key is then removed from the lock. In this position the plungers 3 engage behind the rims of the ejection port and it is no longer possible to remove the breech plug lock through the ejection port. The locking housing 9 prevents displacement of the breech plug lock in the longitudinal direction of the gun.As will appear from Fig. 2 the outer shape of the case 2 is somewhat oval in order to fit the usual shape of the ejection port of the gun.
The rubber insert 8 at the end of the plunger 3 is adapted to eliminate the possibility of pressing in the plunger 3 from the end when the breech plug lock is locked. A tool will bounce against the rubber insert 8 without causing any damage since the rubber insert is resilient.
As will appear from the above the breech plug lock fills up the path of motion of the bolt and it is not possible to let off a shot when the breech plug lock is in place.
Figs. 4 and 5 show another embodiment of the breech plug lock according to the invention. The same parts as in the first embodiment have been given the same reference numerals. The breech plug lock 10 includes only one movable plunger 3.
The lock 1 3 ends in an eccentric pin 14, which cooperates with a cam groove 1 5 in the plunger 3.
The cam groove forms an angle with the longitudinal axis of the lock, which is preferably about 350. At rotation of the eccentric pin 14 by a key, which fits into the lock 13, the eccentric pin 14 moves along the cam groove 1 5 to its extreme position and is locked there against further movement. During rotation of the eccentric pin 14 the plunger 3 is moved-from its retracted position to its extracted position.
The chamber lock 10 comprises at the end opposite the plunger a fixed plunger or plug 11, which is inserted in the body and locked by a locking pin 12. The fixed plug may have different lengths, whereby the lock can be adapted to different gun types having ejection ports of different lengths. Only one length of the plug is shown in the drawing.
Fig. 6 shows another modified embodiment of the breech plug lock according to the invention. To the end opposite the movable plunger of the breech plug lock, a spindle 13 is attached, preferably screwed to the fixed plug 1 The spindle is shaped as the end portion of a normal cartridge shell and comprises a peripheral groove 14. When the breech plug lock is positioned in the ejection port of the gun, the spindle 1 6 facing the bolt, the bolt may be brought into contact with the breech plug lock, whereupon a cartridge shell lock of the bolt grasps the spindle 1 6, whereupon the bolt is positively retained and the bolt cannot be removed from the gun without the breech plug lock first being removed from the ejection port.
Even if preferred embodiments of the invention have been described and illustrated above, it is realized that many modifications and variations may be performed in the showed embodiments without departing from the scope and idea of the invention. The invention is restricted only by the
Claims (8)
1. A breech plug lock for a gun having a bolt, including a body, the outer dimensions of which correspond to the size of an ejection port for cartridge shells of the gun, so that the body is insertable into the ejection port; at least one plunger, which is movable in the body between a retracted position and an extracted position; a lock with a corresponding key; and a driving device for the plunger; wherein the breech plug lock is insertable through the ejection port and into the path of motion of the bolt of the gun when the plunger is in its retracted position, the driving device is adapted to move the plunger to the extracted position in which the plunger extends past the rims of the ejection port and prevents removal of the breech plug lock, and the plunger is locked in the extracted position by means of the lock.
2. A breech plug lock according to claim 1, wherein the driving device comprises a rack connected to the plunger and a gear which is rotatable by means of the key of the lock.
3. A breech plug lock according to claim 1, wherein the driving device comprises an eccentric pin which is rotatable by means of the key and a cam groove in the plunger with which the pin cooperates drivingly, whereby rotation of the eccentric pin moves the plunger.
4. A breech plug lock according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the plunger comprises at its outer end a resilient insert.
5. A breech plug lock according to claim 4 wherein the insert is made of rubber.
6. A breech plug lock according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the breech plug lock comprises at the end opposite the plunger a fixed plug, which is attached to the body and is replaceable, the dimensions of the fixed plug being adapted such that the total length of the breech plug lock corresponds to the ejection port of the gun.
7. A breech plug lock according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the breech plug lock includes a spindle which is shaped as the end of a normal cartridge shell with a peripheral groove whereby the bolt of the gun can cooperate when the lock is inserted in the ejection port with the said groove by means of a cartridge shell lock of the bolt so that the bolt is positively retained in the gun by the breech plug lock.
